Minor discoloration on back board along middle of spine. ; 1 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 400 pages; Inadequately documented ancient Greek religion can all too easily be reduced to the dry analysis of archaeological remains and so-called `ritual objects'. This authoritative new work attempts to bridge the gap that usually divides Greek religion from Greek history setting it firmly in the thick of contemporary events and politics. How did people actually worship the gods Was Socrates's trial a crisis for religion or the state or both These are among the key issues addressed in what promises to be the definitive work on the subject for many years to come. . Very minor shelfwear. ; 0.75 x 8.75 x 5.75 Inches; 288 pages; In this unusual synthesis of political and socio- economic history Philip Manville demonstrates that citizenship for the Athenians was not merely a legal construct but rather a complex concept that was both an institution and a mode of social behavior. He further shows that it was not static as most scholarship has assumed but rather has slowly evolved over time. The work is also an explanation of the origins and development of the polis. . ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0472108751 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends portraits and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves minted for official purposes such as paying the army when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history amateur coin collectors and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. Contributors: William E. Metcalf P. Bruun Barbara Levick R. P. Duncan-Jones Anthony Barrett Duncan Fishwick C. E. King Andrew Burnett. . University of Michigan Press hardcover

HELLENISTIC HISTORY AND CULTURE
University of California Press. Very Good. 1996. Softcover. 0520203259 . Top of spine is lightly bumped. Back corner of wraps is creased. ; Hellenistic Culture & Society No 9; 0.9 x 8.8 x 6 Inches; 293 pages; In a 1988 conference American and British scholars unexpectedly discovered that their ideas were converging in ways that formed a new picture of the variegated Hellenistic mosaic. That picture emerges in these essays and eloquently displays the breadth of modern interest in the Hellenistic Age. A distrust of all ideologies has altered old views of ancient political structures and feminism has also changed earlier assessments. The current emphasis on multiculturalism has consciously deemphasized the Western Greco-Roman tradition and Nubians Bactrians and other subject peoples of the time are receiving attention in their own right not just as recipients of Greco-Roman culture. History like Herakleitos' river never stands still. These essays share a collective sense of discovery and a sparking of new ideas--they are a welcome beginning to the reexploration of a fascinatingly complex age. . THE LIFE OF THEMISTOCLES A Critical Survey of the Literary and Archaeological Evidence
Mcgill-Queen's University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1975. Hardcover. 0773501851 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. One closed tear along front corner of dustjacket. Rubbing to DJ. Minor rubbing to boards. ; 250 pages; Themistocles ca. 525 BC-460 BC was a leader in the Athenian democracy during the Persian War. Themistocles favored the expansion of the navy to meet the Persian threat and persuaded the Athenians to spend the surplus generated by their silver mines on building new ships - the Athenian navy grew from 70 to 200 ships. Despite the importance of this enigmatic figure in Greek history our knowledge still largely comes from the ancient accounts of Herodotus Thucydides and Plutarch. Podlecki provides the first modern comprehensive assessment of Themistocles based on literary and archaeological evidence. . Mcgill-Queen's University Press hardcover

CHAUCER'S TROILUS AND CRISEYDE AND THE KNIGHT'S TALE Fictions Used
University Press of America. Good with no dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 081919218X . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. ; 0.55 x 8.5 x 5.59 Inches; 126 pages; This book examines "Troilus and Criseyde" and "The Knight's Tale" as poems which work the same plot to contrasting tragic and joyous endings but for the same purpose of exploring the folly of electing the temporal world over the eternal. It demonstrates that the tragedy of "Troilus and Criseyde" is a consequence of the folly of relying on Fortune and temporal bliss and works through the pattern of a similar dependence in "The Knight's Tale." It then develops the portrayal of the protagonists of the poems as Fortune's Fools through a scrutiny of courtship as game of play of "caritas" and "cupiditas" contrasted with the implications of pity mercy grace and love as used in temporal contexts in the poem but defined theologically elsewhere in Chaucer and of the limitations of knighthood and chivalry as defined by the world of the poems. . CHAUCER'S JOBS
Palgrave Macmillan. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2004. Hardcover. 1403966257 . Minor Shelfwear; The New Middle Ages; 0.7 x 8.3 x 5.5 Inches; 176 pages; Geoffrey Chaucer was not a writer primarily but a privileged official place-holder. Prone to violence including rape assault and extortion the poet was employed first at domestic personal service and subsequently at policework of various sorts protecting the established order during a period of massive social upset. Chaucer's Jobs shows that the servile and disciplinary nature of the daily work Chaucer did was repeated in his poetry which by turns flatters his aristocratic betters and deals out discipline to malcontent others. Carlson contends that it was this social and political quality of Chaucer's writings rathen than artistic merit that made him the "Father of English Poetry." . Palgrave Macmillan hardcover
