AESCHYLUS' SUPPLICES Play and Trilogy
Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1969. First Edition. Hardcover. 0521071828 . Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Minor shelfwear to book. DJ has minor shelfwear. ; 288 pages; This remains the major book on Aeschylus' Supplices its dating and the trilogy to which it belonged. Its first appearance in 1969 was a response to the publication of a papyrus fragment from Oxyrhynchus in Egypt which indicated a late production date the 460s BC for Aeschylus' play. This upset the previous consensus that it was the earliest Greek tragedy to survive: there was Garvie argued no longer good reason to suppose that the play belonged to an early stage in its author's development. The book also examines the evidence for reconstruction of the other lost plays of the trilogy. Garvie remains convinced that even without the additional testimony of the papyrus all the internal from the text of the play points to the 460s though some have tried to pull it back to the 470s because it feels like an early play. Some of the salutary lessons to be drawn from the discovery of the papyrus have still to be learnt. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

BEFORE COLOR PREJUDICE The Ancient View of Blacks
Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1991. Hardcover. 0674063805 . Newspaper clipping of Snowden's obituary tipped in. Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Minor creasing along top edge of DJ. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; In this richly illustrated account of black-white contacts from the Pharaohs to the Caesars Frank Snowden demonstrates that the ancients did not discriminate against blacks because of their color. For three thousand years Mediterranean whites intermittently came in contact with African blacks in commerce and war and left a record of these encounters in art and in written documents. The blacks--most commonly known as Kushites Ethiopians or Nubians--were redoubtable warriors and commanded the respect of their white adversaries. The overall view of blacks was highly favorable. In science philosophy and religion color was not the basis of theories concerning inferior peoples. And early Christianity saw in the black man a dramatic symbol of its catholic mission. This book sheds light on the reasons for the absence in antiquity of virulent color prejudice and for the difference in attitudes of whites toward blacks in ancient and modern societies. ; 176 pages . Very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries 12; 256 pages; The surviving text of the fragmentary Phaethon of Euripides depends chiefly on two sources: two pages from a Euripidean manuscript written about A.D. 500 and a papyrus of the third century B.C. which contains a substantial part of the parodos. These sources are supplemented by a number of citations in classical authors and by a recently published fragmentary hypothesis. Professor Diggle has examined all the manuscript evidence and offers many decipherments. He gives a text of the play and of the hypothesis an exegetical commentary prolegomena and appendices in which he discusses the treatment of the Phaethon myth in classical literature and attempts a reconstruction of the plot of the play. .
