MURDER AMONG FRIENDS Violation of Philia in Greek Tragedy
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0195131495 . Former owner's name on ffep. Light bump to base of spine. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Modern scholars have followed Aristotle in noting the importance of philia kinship or friendship in Greek tragedy especially the large number of plots in which kin harm or murder one another. More than half of the thirty-two extant tragedies focus on an act in which harm occurs or is about to occur among philoi who are blood kin. In contrast Homeric epic tends to avoid the portrayal of harm to kin. It appears then that kin killing does not merely occur in what Aristotle calls the "best" Greek tragedies; rather it is a characteristic of the genre as a whole. In Murder Among Friends Elizabeth Belfiore supports this thesis with an in-depth examination of the crucial role of philia in Greek tragedy. Drawing on a wealth of evidence she compares tragedy and epic discusses the role of philia relationships within Greek literature and society and analyzes in detail the pattern of violation of philia in five plays: Aeschylus' Suppliants Sophocles' Philoctetes and Ajax and Euripides' Iphigenia in Tauris and Andromache. Appendixes further document instances of violation of philia in all the extant tragedies as well as in the lost plays of the fifth and fourth centuries B. C. E. ; 304 pages . RITUALISED FRIENDSHIP AND THE GREEK CITY
Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2002. Softcover. 0521522102 . Light shelfwear. Scholars' name to ffep Mark Golden. ; 212 pages; In this book Gabriel Herman offers a new interpretation of Greek xenia a term traditionally rendered as 'guest-friendship'. Drawing on contemporary literary sources and inscriptions as well as anthropology sociology and comparative evidence from other times he shows that xenia was a bond of fictitious kinship akin to godparenthood rather than a tie of hospitality or ordinary 'friendship'. Starting off from this proposition he develops a dynamic model of the formation of elite relationships and values. He explores the concepts of obligation and loyalty gift and bribe treason and patriotism and places the Greek city within a new context of power relations. This book which assumes no knowledge of Greek will be of interest to students and teachers of ancient history and classics. It will also appeal to social and political scientists. . AGESILAOS AND THE CRISIS OF SPARTA
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1987. Hardcover. 0801835054 . Very light shelfwear to book. Scholars' name to ffep Mark Golden. ; As one of the two Spartan kings Agesilaos II presided over Sparta's greatest imperial expansion and its collapse as a major power. At his accession in 400 BC Sparta had recently defeated Athens in the Peloponnesian War and was the undisputed leader of the Aegean Greek world; at the time of his death some forty years later Sparta had been reduced to the status of a mere Peloponnesian squabbler its role indistinguishable from that of any of a number of other Greek states. "Agesilaos and the Crisis of Sparta" is an account of this critical period of Greek history focusing on a single career. Progressing both chronologically and thematically the author reveals the principal aspects of Spartan politics and society and appraises the possible causes of Sparta's preciptous decline and fall. ; 520 pages . VITA VIGILIA EST Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick
Institute of Classical Studies. Near Fine. 2008. Softcover. 1905670141 . Very light shelfwear else fine. ; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Plinys life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Plinys life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Plinys attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. . Institute of Classical Studies paperback

THE ART OF BACCHYLIDES
Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1985. First Edition. Hardcover. 0674046668 . Scholars' name to ffep Mark Golden. Else book is fine. Very light shelfwear to DJ. ; Martin Classical Lectures 29; 224 pages; Anne Burnett shows us the art of Bacchylides in the context of Greek lyric traditions. She discusses the beginnings of choral poetry and the functions of the choral myth; she describes the purposes of the victory song in particular and the practices of Bacchylides and Pindar as they fulfilled their victory commissions. In analyzing individual poems Burnett's approach is two-fold for each ode is seen as a choral performance reflecting archaic cult practice while it is also studied as the expression of a particular poetic vision and sensibility. Thus the formal elements of the Bacchylidean victory songs are recognized as the response of a chorus which must give semi-religious praise to a noble athlete or prize-winning prince in times of increasing democracy. At the same time an artistry and an ethic peculiar to Bacchylides are discovered in the manipulation of fictions and mythic materials. . Harvard University Press hardcover

Fantham Professor Elaine
ROMAN LITERARY CULTURE From Cicero to Apuleius
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine. 1999. Softcover. 0801862019 . Scholars' name to ffep Mark Golden. Else book is fine. ; Ancient Society and History; 352 pages; Scholars of ancient literature have often focused on the works and lives of major authors rather than on such questions as how these works were produced and who read them. In Roman Literary Culture Elaine Fantham fills that void by examining the changing social and historical context of literary production in ancient Rome and its empire. Fantham discusses the habits of Roman readers and developments in their means of access to literature from booksellers and copyists to pirated publications and libraries. She examines the issues of patronage and the utility of literature. She shows how the constraints of the physical object itselfthe ancient "book"influenced the practice of both reading and writing. And she explores the ways in which ancient criticism and critical attitudes reflected cultural assumptions of the time. . The Johns Hopkins University Press paperback
