THINKING LIKE A LAWYER Essays on Legal History and General History for John Crook on His Eightieth Birthday
Brill Academic Publishers. Fine with no dust jacket. 2002. Hardcover. 9004124748 . Mnemosyne Bibliotheca Classica Batava : Supplementum; 1 x 9.7 x 6.3 Inches; 301 pages; This is a book about the law and life of Romein which contributors respond to John Crook's injunction to 'think like lawyers' by ranging as far as ancient Greece ancient Persia and modern Denmark to expound their themes and draw comparisons. An opening section focuses on Civil Law more or less as conventionally conceived with chapters on the peculium on municipal law at Irni in Roman Spain on advisers of Roman provincial governors and on violent crime. Roman perceptions of the physical and human worlds are the focus of a second section and comparisons between Greek Roman and modern ways of thinking about law and government come into the third section. In the final section contributors argue the history of law and life from refractions of real and imagined Rome. . Brill Academic Publishers hardcover

H. PLUTARCH'S SERTORIUS A Historical Commentary
The University of North Carolina Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 080782139X . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 1.12 x 9.55 x 6.44 Inches; 316 pages; C. F. Konrad provides the first book-length commentary on Plutarch's Life of Sertorius the work that has shaped most modern interpretations of the man and his career. Quintus Sertorius 126-73 B. C. was a political and military leader during the period of turmoil that ended with the Roman Republic's disintegration just thirty years after his death. A major figure on the losing side in the first civil war 87-82 B. C. he went to Spain to continue the struggle against the ruling senatorial faction with the help of Roman exiles and the native population. His military skill was much admired but his increasingly despotic behavior combined with failing luck in the field eventually prompted Sertorius' assassination by his Roman staff. One of Plutarch's most austere biographies Sertoriuslacks the rich color and wealth of anecdote characteristic of his Antony or Perikles yet it is unsurpassed in its seemingly unbounded sympathy for its subject and is the most substantial source extant on Sertorius. By analyzing Plutarch's method and purpose Konrad develops a more critical and less eulogistic view of Sertorius' character and his actions during this period. The Greek text of Plutarch's biography is included in this book. . The University of North Carolina Press hardcover

Dustjacket is protected in mylar. DJ is price-clipped. Former owner's name on ffep. Bookplate on title-page. Minor bumping to corners. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources chronology bias interest in causation etc. The introduction ends with a rsum of the numerous theories of the author's identity Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all. The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia. . Cambridge University Press hardcover

THE POLITICS OF PEARL Court Poetry in the Age of Richard II
D. S. Brewer. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0859915999 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. 'Write-off' has been stamped to top of textblock. Book appears unread. Very light shelfwear. ; 0.63 x 9.21 x 6.14 Inches; 264 pages; This is an entirely new and original reading of 'Pearl' placing the anonymous masterpiece in the context of the Cheshire coterie that flourished at the court of Richard II during the 1390s. The brilliance of its poetic construction has long been acknowledged but here 'Pearl' is also shown to engage with the social religious and political events of the late fourteenth century. The poem's defense of infant baptism is seen as countering Lollard criticism of the sacraments its retelling of the Parable of the Vineyard as offering scriptural support to the aims of the Statute of Labourers. The poem's dazzling representation of aristocratic magnificence - jewelled crowns gem-embroidered gowns livery badges civic processions and monumental architecture - studied in this context relates to the spectacular royal culture of one of England's most ambitious monarchs. The courtly elegy offered consolation after the death of Anne of Bohemia while its vision of a royal child-bride figured in the intense national debate over the king's prospective marriage to the six-year-old Isabelle of France. Richard II's fall from power brought to an end not simply Cheshire privilege but also a poetic tradition that produced some of the finest works of English literature most notably 'Pearl' and 'Gawain and the Green Knight'. . THE EMPIRE OF THE TETRARCHS Imperial Pronouncements and Government AD 284-324
Oxford University Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1996. Hardcover. 0198149840 . Very light shelfwear to heel of spine else Fine. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 1.11 x 8.74 x 5.7 Inches; 424 pages; The era of Diocletan and Constantine is a significant period for the Roman empire with far-reaching administrative changes that established the structure of government for three hundred years - a time when the Christian church passed from persecution to imperial favour. It is also a complex period of co-operation and rivalry between a number of co-emperors the result of Diocletian's experiment of government by four rulers the tetrarchs. This book examines imperial government at this crucial but often neglected period of transition through a study of the the pronouncement that the emperors and their officials produced drawing together material from a wide variety of sources: the law codes Christian authors inscritpions and papyri. The study covers the format composition and promulgation of documents and includes chronological catalogues of imperial letters and edicts as well as extended discussions of the Gregorian and Hermogenian Codes and the ambitious Prices Edict. Much of this has had little detailed coverage in English before. There is also a chapter that elucidates the relative powers of the members of the imperial college. Finally Dr Corcoran assesses how effectively the machinery of government really matched the ambitions of the emperors. . Oxford University Press hardcover

During that period often unsettled by political upheavals the Jewish minority flourished economically but suffered along with the rest of the population during civil war and uprisings of the barons. Morison Stanley
POLITICS AND SCRIPT Aspects of Authority and Freedom in the Development of Graeco-Latin Script from the Sixth Century B. C. to the Twentieth Century A. D.
Oxford Clarendon Press. Very Good- in Very Good- dust jacket. 1972. Hardcover. 0198181469 . Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and institution plates. DJ is protected in plastic. Dustjacket has edgewear with minor chipping and a few tears some repaired with adhesive tape. ; The Lyell lectures; 361 pages; The central argument of Stanley Morison's work is that the development of script inscriptional calligraphic or typographical has been the result of changes in religious or political environment of friction between church and state and of the schism between Eastern and Western Christendom. Morison begins with an example of alphabetic forms on a 6th century BC gravestone from Melos and proceeds through commentary on a notable collection of more than 180 illustrated specimens to trace the career of the Graeco-Roman alphabet up to its use in newspaper typefaces of the 1950s. He also seeks to show that the most widely used printers' typefaces of the twentieth century owe more to their Greek than to their Roman antecedents. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover
