Scarcely anything is known of his life. His poetical efforts were not generally appreciated although he received encouragement from his younger contemporary Plato Plutarch Lysander 18. His chief works were: an epic Thebais an account of the expedition of the Seven against Thebes and the war of the Epigoni; and an elegiac poem Lyde so called from the poet's mistress for whose death he endeavoured to find consolation telling stories from mythology of heroic disasters Plutarch Consul ad Apoll. 9; Athenaeus xiii. 597. Antimachus was the founder of "learned" epic poetry and the forerunner of the Alexandrian school whose critics allotted him the next place to Homer. He also prepared a critical recension of the Homeric poems . Bouma's Boekhuis hardcover

TRIALS OF CHARACTER The Eloquence of Ciceronian Ethos
The University of North Carolina Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1988. Hardcover. 0807817597 . Scratch to front panel of DJ. Minor rubbing to DJ else NF. ; 0.88 x 9.48 x 6.38 Inches; 224 pages; By its very nature the art of oratory involves character. Verbal persuasion entails the presentation of a persona by the speaker that affects an audience for good or ill. In this book James May explores the role and extent of Cicero's use of ethos and demonstrates its persuasive effect. May discusses the importance of ethos not just in classical rhetorical theory but also in the social political and judicial milieu of ancient Rome and then applies his insights to the oratory of Cicero. Ciceronian ethos was a complex blend of Roman tradition Cicero's own personality and selected features of Greek and Roman oratory. More than any other ancient literary genre oratory dealt with constantly changing circumstances with a wide variety of rhetorical challenges. An orator's success or failure as well as the artistic quality of his orations was largely the direct result of his responses to these circumstances and challenges. Acutely aware of his audience and its cultural heritage and steeped in the rhetorical traditions of his predecessors Cicero employed rhetorical ethos with uncanny success. May analyzes individual speeches from four different periods of Cicero's career tracing changes in the way Cicero depicted character both his own and others' as a source of persuasion changes intimately connected with the vicissitudes of Cicero's career and personal life. He shows that ethos played a major role in almost every Ciceronian speech that Cicero's audiences were conditioned by common beliefs about character and finally that Cicero's rhetorical ethos became a major source for persuasion in his oratory. . THE ANCIENT GREEKS A Critical History
Belknap Press. Very Good. 2003. Softcover. 0674033140 . Minor shelfwear. Small chip along foreedge. Minor edgewear. ; 1.46 x 9.2 x 5.98 Inches; 736 pages; An esteemed teacher offers a major reassessment of the history of Greece from prehistoric times to the rise of Alexander. This is a work of prodigious scholarship written in grand style. John Fine surveys the archaeological work that has revealed so much about the civilization of Crete and Mycenaean Greece and discusses the age of colonization during which Greek colonies were established from the Crimea to the Nile from the Caucasus to Spain. Analyzing social and economic developments as well as foreign and inter-city affairs he assesses the history culture and democracy of Athens and Sparta's institutions and military exploits; recounts the Greeks' relations and then war with the Persian empire; details alliances struggles and the varying fortunes of the Greek city-states; and relates the rise of Macedon. Fine treats the Greeks' story in the context of events elsewhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Throughout he indicates the nature of the evidence on which our present knowledge is based masterfully explaining the problems and pit-falls in interpreting ancient accounts. The Ancient Greeks is a splendid narrative history and a refreshing reinterpretation that will please students of ancient history and everyone interested in early civilizations. . ROMAN OSTIA
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1977. Second Edition. Hardcover. 0198148100 . Light discoloration to DJ spine. Edgewear to DJ top edge with chipping and a few small tears to extremities. One small closed tear to DJ along bottom edge. Minor bumping to head of spine and one top corner. Former owner's name on ffep. ; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli. ; 1.54 x 9.51 x 6.45 Inches; 722 pages . Princeton University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1984. Hardcover. 0691035695 . Dustjacket has minor edgewear with one closed tear 1" to top of front panel and one small closed tear to bottom of back panel. DJ has rubbing. ; 266 pages; This full-scale sequential reading of Thucydides' history of the Peloponnesian War will be invaluable to the specialist and also to those in search of an introduction and companion to the "Histories. " Moving beyond other studies by its focus on the reader's role in giving meaning to the text it reveals Thucydides' use of objectivity not so much as standard for the proper presentation of his subject matter as a method for communicating with his readers and involving them in the complexity and suffering of the Peloponnesian War. W. Robert Connor shows that as Thucydides' themes and ideas are reintroduced and developed the initial reactions of the reader are challenged subverted and eventually made to contribute to a deeper understanding of the war. This book described earlier approaches to the "Histories " including attempts to account for the paradox of the intense emotional power of a work ostensibly so cool and detached. It demonstrates that many features previously thought to be signs of inconsistencies in Thucydides' thought or of different stages of composition are instead parts of the development of the reader's reaction to the war. . ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0472108751 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends portraits and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves minted for official purposes such as paying the army when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history amateur coin collectors and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. Contributors: William E. Metcalf P. Bruun Barbara Levick R. P. Duncan-Jones Anthony Barrett Duncan Fishwick C. E. King Andrew Burnett. . University of Michigan Press hardcover

It analyses some 2609 legal rulings rescripts given by Roman Emperors between 193 and 305 AD and argues that though issued in the name of emperors they were really both in style and substance the work of professional lawyers. From their style we can detect when one lawyer-draftsman gave way to another we can identify some of the lawyers and we can allot most of the rescripts to their real author. On this basis the author argues that in the third century there was a convention that the rights of citizens would be governed by objective legal standards. The Roman Empire was not a pure autocracy. Updated and in large part rewritten this edition includes on a high-density diskette a reconstruction Palingenesia of the 2609 rescripts. This new and original work of reference will enable scholars to read the texts chronologically and to judge the soundness of the arguments advanced. . Oxford University Press hardcover
