THE ROLE OF THE PARROT IN SELECTED TEXTS FROM OVID TO JEAN RHYS Telling a Story from an Alternative Viewpoint
Edwin Mellen Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0773455744 . One small bump along top edge of board else Fine. ; 9 x 0.75 x 6.25 Inches; 227 pages; This book features the efforts of a group of academics from diverse disciplines that have been working together to highlight the presence of the parrot in selected texts across the centuries. Their common purpose is to demonstrate that fictional parrots invariably function as more than decoration comedy or badges denoting the eccentricity of their human owners. These versatile and talented birds function as markers for subtle literary techniques. Using the parrot as an interpretative tool the focus is on a range of narrative strategies and metaphorical meanings employed by the authors in question and argue that these are embodied in the attributes of the speaking bird who figures significantly in each work. Contents: 1. Two Poetic and Parodic Parrots in Latin Literature by Paula James 2. A Byrde of Paradyse: - Skeltons Speke Parot and the Parrots of its Context by Susan Purdie 3. The Nunnery Parrot: Gressets Ver-Vert and his English translators by John Gilmore 4. The View from the Perch: Flauberts Loulou by Julia Courtney 5. Henry Bradshaw Society. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 1870252144 . Light Bumping to top of spine. Book has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Ffep has some discolorations. Slightly cocked. ; Henry Bradshaw Society Subsidia; 1.12 x 8.8 x 5.66 Inches; 320 pages; Amalarius of Metz c775-c850 was the most inventive and influential of early medieval commentators on the liturgy. His Liber officialis and other works popularized the use of allegory to discover deeper spiritual meanings in the rituals of the church. About the sources of Amalarius's thought however and the early shaping of his methods many questions persist. New light is shed on these problems by recently discovered remnants of a hitherto unknown text. The fragments apparently all that survive of a longer work treating the Divine Office and the last three days of Holy Week show many hallmarks of Amalarius's early writing. The present book presents an edition of the Latin texts accompanied by a full English translation and apparatus of sources. A detailed introduction discusses the contents of the fragments the evidence of their authorship and their contribution to present knowledge of Amalarius's career and early medieval liturgical history. . LETTER TO POPE HADRIAN ABOUT THE NOVELTIES OF THE DAY
Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies PIMS. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1974. Hardcover. 0888440243 . Book has minor shelfwear and rubbing. Light bump to top of front board. ; Studies and Texts Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies 24; 125 pages; With the Liber de novitatibus huius temporis epistola ad Adrianum Papam Master Gerhoch 10931169 provost of Reichersberg in Bavaria attempted in 11551156 to inform Pope Hadrian IV 11541159 of the doctrinal novelties of his time the notorious abuses of both secular and ecclesiastical authorities and the scandalous laxity among clergy and religious and to point out the remedies legislated by councils convoked by Innocent II11301143 and Eugene III 11451153. The principal doctrinal innovators denounced by Gerhoch were Peter Abelard d. 1141 and Gilbert bishop of Poitiers d. 1154. As early as 1126 Gerhoch debated with disciples of Abelard at the Roman curia; and beginning in the fifties Master Peter of Vienna a disciple of Bishop Gilbert antagonized Gerhoch a great deal. Gerhoch also tells Hadrian that clerical authorities not only keep armies but also abuse them by waging disorderly wars. Secular powers on the other hand recklessly usurp the goods of the Church for their own ends and fail to pay tithes imposed by Gregory I. In both France and Germany the pope is told the low moral conduct of the clergy calls for more stringent reform. Gerhoch advises the pope also to restrain loud-mouthed jurists in both secular and ecclesiastical courts since they often make their cases so convoluted that it becomes impossible to solve them. This edition of the Latin text is supplemented with a detailed introduction to the issues discussed an extensive bibliography concerning Gerhoch as well as indexes and a glossary . Dustjacket has edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small closed tears along bottom edge. ; The Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome Volume XXXVII; 431 pages; Cosa was a Latin colonia founded under Roman influence in southwestern Tuscany in 273 BC perhaps on land confiscated from the Etruscans. One of the last textual references to Cosa comes from the work of Rutilius Claudius Namatianus in his De reditu suo. In the passage 1.285-90 Rutilius remarks that by 416 the site of Cosa was deserted and could be seen to be in ruins. In the 20th century Cosa was the site of excavations carried out under the auspices of the American Academy in Rome initially under the direction of the archaeologist Frank Edward Brown. Excavations 1948-54 1965-72 have traced the city plan the principal buildings the port and have uncovered the Arx the forum and a number of houses. Unexcavated buildings include a bathing establishment but no trace of a theater or an amphitheater has been found. In the 1990s a limited series of excavations were carried out under the direction of Elizabeth Fentress then associated with the American Academy in Rome. This latter campaign aimed at understanding the history of the site between the imperial period and the middle agest. Sample excavations took place over the whole site with larger excavations on the Arx the Eastern Height and around the Forum. . Pennsylvania State University Press hardcover

THE CROWD IN ROME IN THE LATE REPUBLIC
University of Michigan Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0472108921 . Light shelfwear to book. Former owner's name on ffep. Dustjacket has edgewear to front bottom corner that has been repaired with scotch tape by former owner. ; The Crowd in Rome in the Late Republic explores the consequences of a democracy in which public office could only be gained by direct election by the people. And while the Senate could indeed debate public matters advise other officeholders and make some administrative decisions it could not legislate. An officeholder who wanted to pass a law had to step out of the Senate-house and propose it to the people in the Forum. In an expansion and revision of his Thomas Spencer Jerome lectures Fergus Millar explores the development of the Roman Republic which by its final years had come to cover most of Italy. To exercise their rights voters had to come to Rome or to live in or near the city as about one third of them did and to meet in the Forum. Millar takes the period from 80 to 50 B. C. the dictatorship of Sulla to Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon and shows how crowd politics was central to the great changes that took place year after year. The volume will interest general readers as well as students of politics and Roman history. Technical terms are explained and foreign words are kept to a minimum. ; Thomas Spencer Jerome Lectures; 1.06 x 9.32 x 6.34 Inches; 256 pages . University of Michigan Press hardcover
