By comparing it with the Historiae of Ammianus Marcellinus he puts the probable publication date between 392 and 395. For Sir Ronald Syme it is a historical fiction about gods and bad emperors. FEAR OF DIVERSITY The Birth of Political Science in Ancient Greek Thought
University of Chicago Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1992. Hardcover. 0226735532 . Top corners very light rounded. ; 0.88 x 9.31 x 6.27 Inches; 268 pages; This wide-ranging book locates the origin of political science in the everyday world of ancient Greek life thought and culture. Arlene Saxonhouse contends that the Greeks confronted by the puzzling diversity of the physical world sought a force that would unify constrain and explain it. This drive toward unity did more than value the mind over the senses: it led the Greeks to play down the very real complexities--particularly regarding women the family and sexuality--in both their political and personal lives. Saxonhouse opens up fresh understandings of such issues as the Greeks' fear of the feminine and their attempts to ignore the demands that gender reproduction and the family inevitably make on the individual. . Scholten Joseph B.
THE POLITICS OF PLUNDER Aitolians and Their Koinon in the Early Hellenistic Era 279-217 B. C.
University of California Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. 0520201876 . Light shelfwear to DJ. Small remainder mark to bottom of textblock. ; Between 279 and 229 B. C. the Aitolian koinon a federation of mountain cantons in west central Greece expanded to incorporate many of the neighboring lands and peoples lying between the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. This new political configuration contributed to the development of modern systems of federal democracy based on proportional representation. Despite these institutional advances the Aitolians and their polity are reviled in the ancient historical tradition which views them as backward semi-barbarous brigands. The Politics of Plunder is the first English-language book in over a century to examine the political history of the Aitolian koinon in its era of expansion. Joseph Scholten presents a chronological reconstruction of the koinon's course of expansion synthesizing a number of recent studies covering Aitolian topography epigraphy and institutional development that help to compensate for deficiencies in the ancient narrative record. His study is the first to ask how a people and a polity so detested by their contemporaries succeeded in making such fundamental contributions to their regional political culture. Scholten's careful investigation charts a middle course that neither whitewashes the Aitolians nor credulously accepts the biased ancient tradition. This balanced approach provides a much-needed fresh perspective on the Aitolians and their koinon. Discussing the history of the ancient Aegean Greek world and the political economic and social history of the Hellenistic Era this book will interest anyone concerned with those subjects or fascinated by the development of ancient Greek political institutions and theories particularly federalism. ; Hellenistic Culture and Society; 2.72 x 9.31 x 7.94 Inches; 339 pages . The first 20 pages are creased but with no loss to text else VG. Adhesives stain to front free-page. ; 256 pages; Julian is called by Christians "The Apostate" because they believe he converted from Christianity to Paganism. He himself as attested to in private letters between him and the Rhetorician Libanius had Christianity forced on him as a child by his cousin Constantius II who was a zealot Christian and would have not tolerated a pagan relative but Julian had never really accepted any religion until his reading of the Homeric poems some of the most important texts for the Greek religion. After this conversion to Hellenism he devoted his life to protecting and restoring the fame and security of this more ancient tradition as well as other religious traditions such as Judaism from Christian persecution. After gaining the purple Julian started a religious reformation of the state which in his intentions was to give back its lost strength to the Roman State. He supported the restoration of the old Roman faith based on polytheism. Julian reduced the influence of Christian bishops in public offices. The lands taken by the Church were to be returned to their original owners and the bishops lost the privilege to travel for free at expenses of the State. . Weidenfeld and Nicolson hardcover

THE FOUNDATION OF ROME Myth and History
Cornell University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 080143114X . Top corners lightly bumped. Light general soiling. ; 9.5 x 0.75 x 6.5 Inches; 236 pages; "The Foundation of Rome is one of the few intelligent books on the subject neither hypercritical nor visionary; its particular strength lies in the skillful interweaving of modern historiography and ideology with ancient history. "--Jerzy Linderski University of North Carolina. At once a historical essay and a self-conscious meditation on the writing of history The Foundation of Rome takes as its starting point a series of accounts of Rome's origins offered over the course of centuries. Alexandre Grandazzi places these accounts in their contemporary contexts and shows how the growing sophistication in methodology gradually changed the accepted views of the city's origins. He looks for example at the hypercritical philology of the nineteenth century which cast aside everything that could not be verified. He then explains how the increase in archaeological discoveries and changing archaeological techniques influenced the story of Rome's birth. Grandazzi produces a depiction of Rome's origins that is both up-to-date and provocative. His use of scientific parallels in describing changes in the ways texts were analyzed and his broad familiarity with comparative material make his synthesis particularly illuminating and he writes with clarity verve and wit. . ROBERT ESTIENNE'S INFLUENCE ON LEXICOGRAPHY
University of Texas Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1963. Hardcover. DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and one small tear. Rubbing to DJ. Minor bumping to book. ; Towering above printers of his time and their successors for many years afterward was the figure of Robert Estienne the great French lexicographer of the sixteenth century whose contribution to knowledge and its dissemination is the subject of this authoritative book. The span of Robert Estienne's life 1503 - 1559 encompassed the historical epochs and events which shaped his career: the Renaissance the Reformation and the invention of printing by movable type. His keen interest in the revival of ancient literatures and languages and his training in the art of printing pointed the road he would travel and the climate of opinion in the Reformation determined his destiny. Robert Estienne promoted classical learning by printing the works of good authors; to spread knowledge of ancient literature he compiled dictionaries and grammars which were adopted by most of the universities of Europe. His dictionary of proper names of Biblical and classical origin the Dictionarium historicum ac poeticum became one of the great source books for later compilers of dictionaries and for authors. Ben Jonson showed familiarity with his texts; Spenser and Milton sometimes set translations of his phraseology directly into their poetry. Perpetuation of the few errors he made is one sure proof that his dictionaries were used and copied. An exemplar of learning in the classics and scripture he searched in ancient manuscripts to avoid repeating the numerous errors that had crept into Bible translations over hundreds of years. ; 136 pages . THE ANCIENT ROMANCES A Literary-Historical Account of Their Origins
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1967. Hardcover. Former owner's bookplate. Light browning to textblock and DJ. Dustjacket has a number inked to top corner and bottom of spine. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and tears. ; Deals with questions relating to the nature and origin of the ancient novels. It also proposes a new and positive theory of what constitutes a literary form generally and how such forms normally arise. Part I considers the serious or ideal Greek romance as a type of literature produced in quantity in response to a continuous popular demand. Part II explains the origin and rationale of the comic romances of Petronius Lucian and Apuleius each in a different manner with respect to the author's purpose his intellectual outlook and the circumstances that impelled him to write his book. ; Sather Classical Lectures; 407 pages . Louden Bruce
THE ODYSSEY Structure Narration and Meaning
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 080186058X . Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 0.98 x 9.37 x 6.31 Inches; 208 pages; Bruce Louden's bold re-reading of the Odyssey -- the first attempt in years to map in detail the poem's overall structure -- offers new insights into the artistry of Odysseus' mythic voyage and enriches our understanding of Homer's masterful craftsmanship. Louden's groundbreaking work uncovers an extended narrative pattern repeated in full three times which reveals the poem's underlying skeletal structure. This organizational analysis helps to explain the existence of several characters or episodes sometimes dismissed as extraneous as late additions or even as corruptions to Homer's original intent. In addition Louden's discovery strengthens the suggestion that the Odyssey was the product of oral tradition. By repeating this sequence of successive motifs a single improvising bard could explore a variety of complex ideas within a poem as long as the Odyssey. Though centrally concerned with the form of Homer's rich and complex plot Louden's study is not exclusively or even primarily formalistic. His investigation involves the study of characters' names challenges faced by Odysseus the structure of the poem and roles assigned to the poem's female characters. Louden's comprehensive achievement gives the reader a fresh perspective on the role of divine hostility and the artistry of an epic survivor on his timeless journey home. .
