‎CARACCIOLI] [L-A.‎

‎Le Langage de la Raison. Par l'Auteur de la Jouissance de soi-meme.‎

‎8vo., on laid paper, with decorative title, small neat contemporary signature on half-title, some negligible marginal age-staining on a few leaves; contemporary full speckled calf, back with five raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments framed and tooled in gilt to a floral design, marbled endpapers, red edges, upper hinge cracked (but binding entirely sound), two small worm-holes at tail of backstrip, a crisp, clean copy. Complete with half-title; wanting one blank preliminary.Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1723-1803) was a prolific writer of poetry, history, fiction and biography. Born in Paris, he served as colonel to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and so travelled widely throughout Europe. Despite close ties to both Louis XV and Louis XVI he managed to survive the Revolution, though eventually he died in penury. The broad thematic range of his works makes him interesting to scholars of manners and many other subjects. He is best known among bibliophiles for two publications printed with coloured inks: Le livre de quatre couleurs (1757) and Le livre à la mode (1759) But the full list of his works is much longer ('trop fécond' complains the ungenerous Nouvelle Biographie Générale), and many of them are of interest. The present work was first published in Paris by Nyon earlier in the same year. It remained popular throughout the eighteenth century and was translated into English as 'The Language of Reason' in 1802. This edition, the first non-French issue, is scarce.‎

‎Peter Weiss, Playwright‎

‎Archive of documents concerning the publication and production of several notable literary works and theatrical plays by Peter Ulrich Weiss‎

‎New York City, Frankfurt, Stockholm, etc., 1961-1966. Substantial archive of documents concerning the publication and production of several notable literary works and theatrical plays by Peter Ulrich Weiss, including correspondence, draft agreements, contracts signed with leading publishers and producers, as well as some programmes and peer reviews, being the working files of his New York agent, Joan Daves. Together with 3 LP record box sets of the first and complete Broadway original cast music recording for the Marat/Sade play. Octavo and Folio documents and letters, ranging in size and number of pages, some signed in the original. Most are in English; some are in German; the lot neatly contained in four ring binders. The vast majority of the documents date to the 1960s, with a scant few being later including a letter regarding a special television production in 1979 with NBC. Occasional wear to extremities, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, clean and bright. A generous and comprehensive archive chronicling the work and partnership of a leading literary agent in the rise of German-American publishing, and one of her notable German writers. Provenance: From the desk of Weiss' literary agent for the US, Joan Daves. Joan Daves (1919-1997) was a leading literary agent with her own agency in New York, whose client list boasts six Nobel Prize winners including Martin Luther King, Jr. Daves had a profound effect on the very existence of German literature in America. Born Liselotte Davidson in Berlin, she escaped Nazi Germany by fleeing to Paris and England before emigrating to the United States in 1940. Her agency, established in 1948, handled the original works of several American authors. She handled Martin Luther King, Jr.'s literary property from 1957 until her death. Of great emphasis with her firm was the representation of several major German publishers, such as Suhrkamp, Piper, S. Fischer Verlag and others. It was the prime time of German writers such as Peter Weiss, Uwe Johnson, Max Frisch, Heinar Kipphardt, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and Hermann Hesse. In the mid-1960s, communication with German publishers was quite different from today. A shipment of galleys was prepared with a 'by sea mail' label. When the New York Times printed the date and time the next ship would leave the harbor, delivery of the parcels of documents to that specific ship was requested. Peter Ulrich Weiss (1916-1982) was a German author, playwright, and experimental filmmaker, who gained celebrity fame on Broadway in the 1960s. He is particularly known for his plays "Marat/Sade" of 1963/65 which is largely represented in the present archive and which was enormously successful, for "The Investigation" of 1965, and for his later novel "The Aesthetics of Resistance" (1971-81). In the 1960s Weiss also embraced and promoted politically controversial groups, standing for revolutionary Cuba, standing against US intervention in Vietnam, and joining Sweden's eurocommunist party. ‎BRATRING, F.W.A.‎

‎Entdeckungsgeschichte Von Neu-Georgien oder Die Arsaciden-Inseln. New Georgia or the Arsacidian Islands and Their History of Discovery‎

‎8vo, 50 pages, with map and portrait bound in recent green paper boards. Text in German. This a monthly issue of an obscure and rare Geographical publication issued in Weimar/ Germany in the late 1700's and early 1800's named 'Geographische Ephemeriden.' It contains a large 50 page report about New Georgia which today is part of the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. In this report the author explores the history, fauna, flora and people of the islands and draws on accounts by John Hunter, Bougainville, Carteret, Labillardiere and others who visited them. The report is accompanied by a portrait of Captain John Hunter as well a fold-out map measuring 250 mm x 190 mm. A very early report and map on the Solomon Islands and very rare.‎

‎CREDNER, Hermann‎

‎Über das Colorado-Plateau zum Grand Cañon. [Colorado Plateau and the Grand Canyon]‎

‎Rare pamphlet. Author's Presentation Copy. 17 pages. Text is in German. Very Good Condition in original sage wrappers, titled to front. Containing the author's geological speech on the formation and features of the great canyons in the Colorado plateau, and with mention of Major John Wesley Powell, who in 1869, led the first expedition down the Grand Canyon. Carl Hermann Credner (1841 - 1913), was a German earth scientist. In 1870 he was appointed professor of geology in the University of Leipzig, and in 1872 director of the Geological Survey of Saxony. He is author of numerous publications on the geology of Saxony, and of an important work, "Elemente der Geologic". He also wrote memoirs on Saurians and Labyrinthodonts. The Grand Canyon is a massive rift in the Colorado Plateau that exposes uplifted Proterozoic and Paleozoic strata, and is also one of the six distinct physiographic sections of the Colorado Plateau province. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for the vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. Geologically it is significant because of the thick sequence of ancient rocks that are beautifully preserved and exposed in the walls of the canyon. These rock layers record much of the early geologic history of the North American continent.‎

‎MALESPINA - VANCOUVER‎

‎Book Review: A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean and round the world in which the coast of North-West America has been carefully examined and accurately surveyed....under the Command of Captain George Vancouver....‎

‎& Vermischte Nachrichten - Nachrict über Malespina's Reise. [Miscellaneous News - Notice from Malespina's Voyage] 8vo. Text is in German. This is a complete monthly issue, containing a contemporary review, 22 pages in length, of the above mentioned title. Attractively bound in continental paper marbled boards with new spine. These are the original pages printed in 1798, the same year as Vancouver's book, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal. Contains a thorough contemporary review of Captain Vancouver's historic scarce 1798 title 'A Voyage of Discovery' with comments on Tahiti, Hawaii, and the Northwest coast. Of further interest in this rare volume is an early notice of Malespina's Spanish voyage to the North West Coast, which had returned to Spain in 1794, but as was customary, details were not released to the public. The expedition had explicitly scientific goals, and the crew consisted of some of the period's leading scientists. Data collected during the expedition surpassed that of Cook, but due to changed political circumstances in Spain, Malaspina was jailed upon his return. The reports and collections were seized and prohibited from publication. The expedition and its findings remained obscure and nearly unstudied by historians until the late 20th century. While exploring along the Strait of Georgia, Captain Vancouver's crew encountered ships from the Malespina expedition under the command of Dionisio Galiano and Cayetano Valdes y Flores. Although the interaction was friendly, it was not until Vancouver met Commander Bodega y Quadra at Friendly Cove, in Nootka Sound, that he asserted England's claims. The two men established friendly working terms, but were unable to agree on how the two countries would settle their respective positions.‎

‎Godofredus Schutze - Schütze‎

‎De Crventis Germanorvm Gentilivm Victimis Hvmanis Liber Vnvs - De Cruentis Germanorum Gentilium Victimis Humanis Liber Unus‎

‎8vo, 124 pages plus 15 page index, bound in contemporary Continental paper boards, a very good example of this rare book. In this work, Schütze deals with human sacrifices of the Germanic and Nordic races, a long forgotten practice of the people in the Arctic Circle trying to appease the gods in order to bring about favorable results in war and harvest. This seems to be the first work on this subject and was quoted as the authorative book of the 18th century. Rare in a First Edition.‎

‎Middleton and Dobbs Controversy - Scarce Letters‎

‎Beitrag zur Geschichte von Christoph Middleton's Seereise um eine nord Westliche Durchfahrt zu finden. [Contribution to the History of Christopher Middleton's Voyage to the North West Passage.]‎

‎8vo. 8 pages. Text is in German. A scarce resource. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. A scarce publication comprising two letters written by Christopher Middleton while at his quarters at Churchill, on the shore of Hudson Bay, dated June 1741 and September 1741 respectively, illuminating details of the long-standing disagreement between Middleton and Dobbs. Christopher Middleton (late 1600s-1770), English naval officer and navigator, was appointed on 5 March 1741 to the command of the Royal Navy's sloop 'Furnace'. He was encouraged by the theories of Arthur Dobbs who was convinced that tide differences pointed to the Passage's entry being near Wager Bay. In May 1741 he left England in the Furnace, accompanied by a smaller vessel, the purchased pink HMS Discovery under the command of Commander William Moor, and sailed to North America in search of a Northwest Passage to the East Indies. He spent the winter at the entrance of the Churchill River in Hudson Bay, then proceeded as far north as Repulse Bay, but was prevented by extreme ice conditions from going any further. Middleton returned to England in 1742, where he was presented with the Copley Medal and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society to whom he presented a paper on "The extraordinary degrees and surprising effects of Cold in Hudson's Bay". Dobbs however accused Middleton of falsification, and the two engaged in a pamphlet controversy for years. In 1744 Dobbs produced 'An Account of the Countries Adjoining to Hudson’s Bay,' which extolled the virtues of the region and criticized the HBC for its stewardship of it. These are the original pages printed in 1806, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. Adam Christian Gaspari and Franz Xaver von Zach were editors of this important scientific journal.‎

‎Karl Ludwig Methusalen Müller‎

‎Bücher-Recensionen [Book Review] - C.C. Robin's Reisen nach dem Innern von Louisiana, dem Westlichen Florida und auf die Inseln Martinique und S. Domingo in den Jahren 1802-1806.‎

‎8vo. 21 pages. Text is in German. A contemporary book review. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a contemporary analysis of the first German translation, by Karl Ludwig Methusalen Müller, of the first edition of Claude Robin's now classic French title , 'Voyages dans l'intérieur de la Louisiane, de la Floride occidentale, et dans les isles de la Martinique et de Saint-Domingue, pendant les années 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805 et 1806.' In itself a fascinating essay contemporary to slave revolts and the Louisiana Purchase, including statistics on slavery, passages are drawn from both the French and German editions, making this a unique item to pair with the collector's volume. Claude C. Robin traveled with his son in Louisiana and in the Caribbean from 1802 to 1806, recording his observations of the rebellion and the subsequent settlement of the refugees in Louisiana. In his 3 volume work, he gave an excellent account of Louisiana's western interior and of Spanish Texas, including natural history and agriculture, the French inhabitants of the area, Louisiana's new American government, geographical delineations, conflicts with Spain, and other civil and political issues. The Louisiana Purchase (Vente de la Louisiane) was the acquisition by the United States of America of 828,800 square miles of the French territory Louisiane in 1803. Robin was present at ceremonies turning Louisiana over to the United States, both in New Orleans and in Natchitoches. He published his account in 1807. The subsequent German translation by Müller, discussed here, was published in 1808. These are the original pages printed in 1809, and NOT a reprint.

The region was once part of the Kingdom of Sicily, then the Kingdom of Naples, and at the time of this publication, had recently fallen under the reign of the French. He was allowed to keep a personal guard of six hundred men. Although he was nominally sovereign of Elba, the island was watched (more or less) by British naval patrols.‎

‎Guillaume Antoine Olivier‎

‎Nachrichten über Persien und die Perser. [Remarks on Persia and the Persians.]‎

‎8vo. 29 pages. Text is in German. This is a complete monthly issue, containing the above mentioned account. Attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. This issue contains a fascinating compendium on Persia, written during the Russo-Persian War and the brief Franco-Persian alliance. The author draws from and quotes passages of Guillaume-Antoine Olivier's now extremely scarce title, the final volume of which had finally been published the same year in 1807, "Le Voyage dans l'Empire Othoman, l'Égypte et la Perse" [A Journey in the Ottoman Empire, Egypt and Persia]. An early nineteenth century account covering geography, natural history, commodities such as gold and silver, and social customs from various different ethnic groups. In this text Persians are ascribed attributes such as civilized, rich, polite, and hospitable, at the same time struggling with long-standing inter-racial conflicts between Arabs, Uzbeks, Kurds, Afghans, and Turkmen (Turkoman), the latter of which are described as warlike. Further topics of interest include practices of astrology, medicine, opium usages, and nomadic gypsies. A scarce dissertation and unique item to pair with the collector's volume. Guillaume-Antoine Olivier (1756-1814) was one of the great French naturalists and entomologists, who in 1796, together with physician and zoologist Jean-Guillaume Bruguières, travelled to Persia for six years on a major expedition, and returned to France in 1798 with substantial natural history specimens from Turkey, Asia Minor, Persia (Iran), Egypt, and some Mediterranean islands. His large collection is now mostly at the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. These are the original pages printed in 1807, and NOT a reprint. This narrative is from a rare multi-volume geographical and scientific journal titled "Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden", which issued fifty volumes from 1798-1816 and which encompassed critical contemporary topics of geography and astronomy. The summit was first reached on the eastern or Valais side, on August 3, 1811, almost 100 years prior to the construction of the remarkable Jungfraujoch railway in 1912. They first had to reach the Aletschfirn, or the west branch of the Aletsch Glacier, and established a base camp north of the Aletschhorn. After 3 days climbing they successfully reached the summit. Their ascent was disputed, motivating them to repeat it the following September. Used the same route to demonstrate their inital and continued success, this time they carried a flag with them. ‎P.J. von Rehfues‎

‎Don Isidoro de Antillon Erdbeschreibung von Spanien und Portugal. [Don Isidore of Antillón's Geography of Spain and Portugal.]‎

‎8vo. 225 pages. Text is in German. This is account is complete, and as as issued, in five parts. Contained in five complete monthly issues of the Allgemeine Geographische Ephemeriden, attractively bound booklet style in recent blue paper covers with label. Published during the Peninsular War (three months prior to the Battle of Leipzig), this is an analysis and German translation of an important and comprehensive treatise by Isidore of Antillón, dealing with astronomical and political geography of Spain and Portugal, perhaps for elucidation and strategy of war. The Spanish title scrutinized, "Elementos de la Geografia Astronomica Natural y Política de España y Portugal," was published in Madrid, 1808. Thorough descriptions include Spanish provinces of New Castile, Old Castile, Extremadura, the Kingdoms of Murcia, Jaén, Cordoba, Aragon, Valencia, Seville, Granada, Navarre, Leon, and Galicia, the principalities of Asturias and Catalonia, the Basque provinces, Álava, Biscaya, and also the Balearic Islands. Also featuring important Spanish presidios or fortresses, and plazas de soberanía in North Africa, specifically Ceuta, Penon de Velez de la Gomera, Peñón de Alhucemas, and Melilla, and of course, historic ports such as Alicante. The analysis of territorial divisions and transformation goes as far back as Roman emperor Julius Caesar Augustus who divided Hispania Ulterior into three administrative regions of Lusitania, Baetica, and Tarraconensis. A separate section is further dedicated to the Kingdom of Portugal, outlining boundaries between Leon, Estremadura, and Seville, and describing towns such as Entre Duero y Minho, Bragança, Trás-os-Montes, Coimbra, so forth. Geographical observations of the Iberian peninsula encompass not only astronomical orientations of several Spanish and Portuguese towns, and population statistics from the 18th and early 19th century, but also mineral deposits including silver, gold, iron, bitumen, copper, zinc, arsenic, and titanium. Isidore d’Antillon (1778-1814), was a renowned Spanish geographer, historian, translator and editor. He is credited with 71 works in 94 publications in 6 languages, covering immense detail on demographics, geography, commerce, natural resources, arts, civil economy and law, government, and military forces of the Iberian Peninsula. His works illustrate the development and vicissitudes of Spanish science during the critical years of Spain's fight for independence, and ultimately the abatement of Spanish progress in the Age of Enlightenment.‎

A very good example of this unrecorded multi page print. An unusual set of instructions to the local magistrates on how to structure their tax accounting reports since audits by the court accountants have found many mistakes. In addition to the detailed 5 page instructions there are 8 pages (plus 3 integral blanks) of spreadsheet which show preprinted columns for Revenue and Expenditures. It is obvious that the court accountants did not expect any deficits as the instructions clearly expect a positive tax remittance to be made at the end of every quarter. Rare. ‎Manuscript, California‎

‎German Manuscript, a Poetic or Theatrical Composition Dealing with California and Dedicated to Queen Marie.‎

‎8vo. 32 page German manuscript, a poetic or theatrical composition dealing with California and dedicated to Queen Marie, Consort of King George V of Hanover, during the California Gold Rush. Dedication page, written in French, signed and dated by 'Gontard' who was an affluent art collector and chairman of an elite German art museum, and whom had evidently just met the Queen in person at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Exquisite red morocco binding by Hof-buchbinders Wilhelm Ermold (binder to the Royal Hanover Court), beautifully finished in gilt with a crowned monogram 'M' for Marie, royal blue cloth endpapers, satin bow dividers. Evidence of an imbedded gift-wrapping ribbon to boards, slight foxing to first few leafs, otherwise very good condition, internally clean and bright, a pleasing work in an elegant binding fit for royalty. Title: Die Reise nach Californien. Nach dem französischen bearbeitet von Eduard Suhren. [A Voyage to California. From the French, edited by Edward Suhren.] The ambiguously titled manuscript may be a German rendition of the French theatrical opera by Dondey Dupré titled "Le voyage en Californie ou notice explicative du panorama" which concerned travels across the United States and explorations in the West - by John Charles Fremont, first explorer to cross the Sierra Nevada in winter, foremost US Senator, abolitionist, who prospered during the California Gold Rush. Content includes the explorer's sighting of pines in the Sierra Nevada oak forest at 3500 feet, melting gold, and so forth. Frémont's father was a native of France, who died only eight years after the French Revolution. As such, his gallant endeavours and accomplishments in the New World would certainly garner much attention in France, as with other European nations with colonies abroad. The French opera was first publicly performed 8 August 1850 in Paris, at the Théâtre des Variétés. Gontard, who met the queen, and dedicates this manuscript to her, may have been involved in a German production, performed for the House of Hanover. A full page dedication inscription, in French, is addressed to the Queen of Hanover, by Huguenot descendant Jakob Friedrich Moritz Gontard (1826-1886), chairman and administrator of the Städel art museum in Frankfurt, officially the Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie. Queen consort of Hanover from 1851 to 1878, née Princess Marie of Saxe-Altenburg, recipient of this dedicated manuscript, was the wife of King George V of Hanover, the last monarch of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover. In his dedication, dated Hanover, 12 July 1855, Gontard thanks the monarch for having come to see his panorama at the International Exhibition held on the Champs-Elysées, stating that her visit inspired the work which forms the volume, and which he humbly offers to her. He references materials which were given to her onsite, which would elucidate the obscure details of the creative piece. The date indicates that King George V and Queen Marie of the short-lived Kingdom of Hanover attended the event in its first eight weeks. Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom paid a visit to the Parisian Exhibition in August. Unique manuscript volume, bound in the Royal Court of Hanover, written at the height of the California Gold Rush and featuring historic Americana content. Manuscript‎
