THE GREEK AND ROMAN CRITICS
Plastic is lifting in places off DJ. Edgewear to DJ with chipping and a few tears. . Author's signature to titlepage Former owner's bookplate on inner cover. Red marker underlining and marginalia on about 15 pages or so. Pen marks circling page numbers of table of contents. Minor Shelfwear to book. ; During the thousand years which separate Homer from Plotinus, the Greeks and Romans not only created two great literatures and most of our literary genres; they also developed theories of literature and methods of criticism. These, though very different from our own, have nevertheless greatly influenced modern thinking, especially during the early centuries of our modern literatures. Poets like Pindar, Aristophanes and Horace, philosophers like Plato, aristotle and Philodemus, orators like Cicero and Quintilian, literary scholars like Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Longinus, all these have left us records of their various points of view. In this book Professor Grube, who is a recognized authority in this field, gives us a clear, full and reliable analysis of the ancient critical texts, and traces the birth and developments of critical thinking thoughout the classical centuries. ; 372 pages; Signed by Author

Bruce, I. A. F.
AN HISTORICAL COMMENTARY ON THE HELLENICA OXYRHYNCHIA
DJ has one small tear. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. Light moisture damage to spine (slight rippling, light waterstaining). Light moisture damage to inside of DJ (colour stains and rippling). Top corners bumped. Inner pages unaffected by moisture. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia, an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC, have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book, Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary, basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri, which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources, chronology, bias, interest in causation, etc. The introduction ends with a résumé of the numerous theories of the author's identity (Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all). The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text, with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia.

MEDIEVALISM, MULTILINGUALISM, AND CHAUCER
Very light bumping to spine ends else fine. ; New Middle Ages; 224 pages; Medievalism, Multilingualism, and Chaucer examines multilingual identity in the writing of Gower, Langland, and Chaucer. Mary Catherine Davidson traces monolingual habits of inquiry to nineteenth-century attitudes toward French, which had first influenced popular constructions of medieval English in such historical novels as Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. In re-reading medieval traditions in the origins of English from Geoffrey of Monmouth, this book describes how multilingual practices reflected attitudes toward English in the age of Chaucer.

GREEK PERSONAL NAMES Their Value as Evidence
Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. One corner very lightly bumped else fine. ; Proceedings of the British Academy 104; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 192 pages; Within the great diversity of their world, the assertion of origin was essential to the ancient Greeks in defining their sense of who they were and how they distinguished themselves from neighbours and strangers. Each person's name might carry both identity and origin - 'I am' . . . inseparable from 'I come from' . . . Names have surfaced in many guises and locations - on coins and artefacts, embedded within inscriptions and manuscripts - carrying with them evidence even from prehistoric and preliterate times. The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names has already identified more than 200,000 individuals. The contributors to this volume draw on this resource to demonstrate the breadth of scholarly uses to which name evidence can be put. These essays narrate the stories of political and social change revealed by the incidence of personal names and cast a fascinating light upon both the natural and supernatural phenomena which inspired them. This volume offers dramatic illumination of the ways in which the ancient Greeks both created and interpreted their world through the specific language of personal names.
