‎CONVENTIONS OF FORM AND THOUGHT IN EARLY GREEK EPIC POETRY‎

‎Spine is a little sunned. Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Scholar's name to half-title (G. P. Goold). ; Represents the first systematic attempt to treat all Greek poems composed in dactylic hexameter from the eighth to the sixth centuries B. C. As a homogeneous and coherent body of poetry. Thalmann argues that there is a fundamental kinship among the Iliad and the Odyssey, Hesiod's Theogony and Works and Days, the Homeric Hymns and other early epics of which only fragments survive. Table of Contents are: 1. The Organization of Thought 2. Design of the Poem 3. Gifts of the Gods 4. Poets on their art I and II 6. Poetry in the Odyssey. ; 262 pages‎

‎LATIN WORD ORDER Structured Meaning and Information‎

‎Light foxing to textblock. TLS review clipping tipped in. Minor creasing to lower section of DJ. ; Word order is not a subject anyone reading Latin can afford to ignore: apart from anything else, word order is what gets one from disjoint sentences to coherent text. Reading a paragraph of Latin without attention to the word order entails losing access to a whole dimension of meaning, or at best using inferential procedures to guess at what is actually overtly encoded in the syntax. This book begins by introducing the reader to the linguistic concepts, formalism and analytical techniques necessary for the study of Latin word order. It then proceeds to present and analyze a representative selection of data in sufficient detail for the reader to develop both an intuitive grasp of the often rather subtle principles controlling Latin word order and a theoretically grounded understanding of the system that underlies it. Combining the rich empirical documentation of traditional philological approaches with the deeper theoretical insight of modern linguistics, this work aims to reduce the intricate surface patterns of Latin word order to a simple and general crosscategorial system of syntactic structure which translates more or less directly into constituents of pragmatic and semantic meaning. ; 9.2 X 6.4 X 1.5 inches; 656 pages‎

‎LINGUISTICS AND FORMULAS IN HOMER Scalarity and Description of the Particle Per‎

‎Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. ; The purpose of this study is to provide a description of the Greek particle per as it occurs in the text of Homer. As such it is a contribution to the study of Ancient Greek in general and of the Greek' particles in particular. But the work transgresses the boundaries of Greek linguistics' proper. First, the discussion of per as a scalar article contributes to the discussion of scalar phenomena in general. Second, as a description of a linguistic feature in the Iliad and Odyssey, metrical texts of oral-formulaic origin, this study is also an essay in the relation between linguistics on the one hand and formulas and metre on the other. ; 318 pages‎

‎Dustjacket has tear (3 cm) to back panel and chipping to extremities. DJ is price-clipped. DJ spine browned. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Small red 'J' stamped to base of textblock. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 190 pages; Commentaries on the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia, an anonymous history of events in the Greek world in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BC, have usually dealt almost entirely with problems of the text. In this book, Dr Bruce has written an historical commentary, basing his work on both the London and Florence papyri, which between them provide all the surviving fragments of the text. Dr Bruce begins with a brief description of the two papyri. He then discusses the Oxyrhynchus historian's style and method - his sources, chronology, bias, interest in causation, etc. The introduction ends with a résumé of the numerous theories of the author's identity (Dr Bruce favours either Cratippus or an author not known to us by name at all). The main part of the commentary is arranged in the form of notes on the sections of the Greek text, with occasional detailed notes on particular words or phrases. There are appendices on the Battle of Sardis and the Constitution of Boeotia; and the book concludes with a full biography. Dr Bruce's book is a complete guide available for further historical study of the Hellenica Oxyrhynchia.‎

‎HOMER AND THE ORIGIN OF THE GREEK ALPHABET‎

‎Some heavy Foxing/dustsoiling to textblock. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Who invented the Greek alphabet and why? The purpose of this challenging book is to inquire systematically into the historical causes that underlay the radical shift from earlier and less efficient writing systems to the use of alphabetic writing. The author reaches the conclusion that a single man, perhaps from the island of Euboea, invented the Greek alphabet specifically in order to record the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer. ; 9.5 x 1 x 6.5 Inches; 306 pages‎

‎EPIC SINGERS AND ORAL TRADITION‎

‎Light Foxing/dustsoiling to textblock. Light foxing to endpapers. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; Albert Bates Lord here offers an unparalleled overview of the nature of oral-traditional epic songs and the practices of the singers who composed them. Shaped by the conviction that theory should be based on what singers actually do, and have done in times past, the essays collected here span half a century of Lord's research on the oral tradition from Homer to the twentieth century. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork in living oral traditions and on the theoretical writings of Milman Parry, Lord concentrates on the singers and their art as manifested in texts of performance. In thirteen essays, some previously unpublished and all of them revised for book publication, he explores questions of composition, transmittal, and interpretation and raises important comparative issues. Individual chapters discuss aspects of the Homeric poems, South Slavic oral-traditional epics, the songs of Avdo Metedovic, Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon poetry, the medieval Greek Digenis Akritas and other medieval epics, central Asiatic and Balkan epics, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Bulgarian oral epic. ; Myth And Poetics; 9.1 X 6.3 X 0.9 inches; 280 pages‎
