She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers such as omens tokens and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites including cursing oath-taking and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy. . 0691032386 . One-half inch at bottom of front spine shows rubbing almost through to bottom of paper wraps but not an actual tear. Glossy papers with color and black and photographs of titles for sale. 221 numbered pages. Text block clean and tight. No markings noted. Almost every item has photograph and at least one page many more than one page of detail text about the book. Majority of volumes published in the 1600s though several are from the 1500s and 1700s. Pavol Mestan was the co-founder and long-term director of the Museum of Jewish Culture in Slovakia. The converence was aimed at discussing issues concerning research and educations vis-a-vis one of the biggest tragedies in human history. The keynote speaker noted that there were at least two important links bewteen Holocaust commemoration and the wider agenda of supporting human rights. The Holocaust was and remains a European tragedy but also in a certain sense a tragedy of the world as a whole. Carli Palace is a Neoclassical style palace located in Via Roma in the city center of Verona. The building was commissioned by Marquis Giuseppe Della Torre in the second half of the 18th century. In 1839 the building was purchased by the Imperial Austrian Authorities as the house of Supremo Imperial Regio Senato di Giustizia del Regno Lombardo Veneto. In 1853 the building became Field Marshal Johann Joseph Radetzky's residence the Lombardo-Veneto Civilian and Military Governor. In 1859 the Archduke Albrecht Duke of Teschen Commander in Chief of the Veneto Army established his Headquarters. The building maintained its military functions even under the Kingdom of Italy as the seat of the Corps Headquarters deployed in Verona. On February 22 1951 an Italian four star Army headquarters HQ was activated in the building but on July 10 it became a NATO headquarters named Allied Land Forces Southern Europe LANDSOUTH until 1999 when it was reappointed as JOINT COMMAND SOUTH JC SOUTH. The headquarters were de-activated on July 1 2004. Allied Land Forces Southern Europe LANDSOUTH was a military command of NATO's Allied Forces Southern Europe AFSOUTH command. Based in Verona in Northern Italy LANDSOUTH was tasked with defending Italy north of the Apennine mountains against a Warsaw Pact or Yugoslavian invasion. Following the creation of NATO in 1949 the Italian military was integrated into NATO's Allied Forces Southern Europe command and prepared for a feared Soviet invasion from the east possibly via Yugoslavia. Allied Land Forces Southern Europe LANDSOUTH was activated on 10 July 1951 to defend northeastern Italy and headquartered in the Carli Palace in Verona. The commanding general of LANDSOUTH was an Italian Generale di Corpo d'Armata equal to a US Army four-star general with an Italian two star general as Chief of Staff an Italian one star general as head of operations and a US Army one star general as head of logistic support. LANDSOUTH was under the command of AFSOUTH in Naples and supported by the Allied Air Forces Southern Europe's AIRSOUTH Fifth Allied Tactical Air Force 5 ATAF in Vicenza.
