As an editor and publisher, Scheiber took particular interest in Jewish sacred folklore, the history of Hungarian Jewry, and the connections between Hungarian folklore and world literature. He wrote significant works on János Arany and Kálmán Mikszáth, and kept a diary, written in the form of letters to his brother. After 1933, he published as many as 1, 600 works; one of the most important is his Geniza Studies (1981) , summarizing the results of 40 years of research. Moses Avigdor Shulvass (19091988) , scholar and educator. Born in Plonsk, Poland, Shulvass studied in Berlin. He lived in Erez Israel from 1938 to 1948 and then immigrated to the United States, where he eventually became professor of Jewish history at Spertus College of Jewish Studies in Chicago. His publications in many languages include historical studies on Italian Jewry. Of special interest are his books Roma ve-Yerushalayim (Rome and Jerusalem, 1945) ; Hayyei ha-Yehudim be-Italyah bi-Tekufat ha-Renaissance (Jewish Life in Renaissance Italy, 1955) ; and his biographical sketch of Samuel David Luzzatto with documentary supporting material, Pirkei Hayyim (1951) . A landmark study on the Sefer Asaf, the earliest known Hebrew work on medicine, extant in 16 manuscripts, some complete; it constitutes a source of information on ancient customs and Jewish medical ethics as well as of ancient Jewish remedies and Hebrew, Aramaic, Persian, Latin, and Greek medical terminology. Excerpts from Greek medical books, some of which have been lost and are not known from any other sources, appear in Hebrew in this book. The most complete manuscripts are in Munich, Oxford, Brit. Museum London, Florence, and Paris. The book was not written by Asaph himself, but by his disciples. They mention, as teachers, R. Johanan b. Zavda and R. Judah ha-Yarhoni, as well as Asaph. Some sections of the book are very old, though others were written or translated from other languages as late as the seventh until the tenth century. The antiquity of the work is apparent from its style, similar to that of the older Midrashim, from its use of Persian (rather than Arabic) synonyms, and from the mention of weights current in Palestine during the talmudic period. - EJ 2008. In 1898, Rudolf Rocker, a German non-Jewish anarchist who had immersed himself into the Yiddish radical culture of London's East End, became the editor of the paper. In 1890, after he lost his entire fortune, he could not afford to print the almanac's third issue, which had been edited but was subsequently never printed (Wikipedia, 2018) . The Introduction states that the book was undertaken at the behest of the Rabbi of the Aschkenazic community of London, Solomon Hirschell, together with Raphael di Meldola, Rabbi of the Sephardic community. It also includes the approbation of di Meldola as well as that of Rabbi Solomon ben Zevi Hirsch, the purpose of the work being to protect Jewish children from the inroads of Christian missionaries.The author indicates that the lack of understanding of Judaism among youth is the principle reason why he composed this work. Yet it was intended not just for Jews: Prof. David Ruderman has noted that, "except for its denunciation of Christian missionaries, Cohen's catechism with its English translation, seems to be nothing more than an innocent, uncontroversial presentation of the Jewish faith meant for both Jewish and Christian eyes" (D. B. Ruderman, Jewish Enlightenment in an English Key: Anglo-Jewry's Construction of Modern Jewish Thought, p. 250). Cohen's work was indeed shared with American non-Jews. The Jewish merchant David Isaacs, in his correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, sent the President a copy of the book [see University of Virginia exhibit (2001), To Seek the Peace of the City: Early Jewish Settlement in Charlottesville]. In 1818 Rebecca Gratz offered a copy to her friend Maria Fenno Hoffman, wife of the Attorney General of New York, Ogden Hoffman [see E. Wolf & M. Whiteman, The History of the Jews of Philadelphia, p. 304]. Jacob Marcus Rader lists Cohen's work as one of the Jewish educational books available to Rebecca Gratz when she began operating her Sunday School in Philadelphia [see United States Jewry, 1776-1985, 1-2, p. 393]. A review of this book was printed by Rabbi Yom Tov Benet in his book Tene Bekorim (1767). Shalom ben Jacob Cohen (17721845) himself was a Hebrew writer, poet, and editor. Born in Mezhirech, Poland, he studied German and read the new Hebrew literature, particularly Ha-Me'assef. His first book, Mishlei Agur (1799), was a collection of Hebrew fables in rhyme, with German translation, aimed at teaching Jewish children simple and clear Hebrew. Cohen went to Berlin in 1789 and taught in the Hinnukh Ne'arim school and in private homes. After the publication of several works he renewed the publication of Ha-Me'assef and served as its editor (180911). In 1813 Cohen left Germany, spent a short period in Amsterdam, and moved to London where he tried unsuccessfully to establish a Jewish school. From London, Cohen moved to Hamburg (1816 or 1817), where he spent three controversy-laden years. In a posthumously published poem he attacked the hypocrisy of the "reformists" for their lack of religious belief and national feelings and considered the establishment of the Reform temple in Hamburg an act of blasphemy. However, he refrained from public intervention on this controversy. In 1820 Cohen was invited by Anton Schmid to serve as head proofreader in the Hebrew section of his printing press in Vienna where he remained for 16 years. In 1821 Cohen established the annual Bikkurei ha-Ittim, three issues of which appeared under his editorship. In 1834 he published his poetic work, Nir David, a description of the life of King David, one of the first romantic works in Hebrew literature. In 1836 Cohen returned to Hamburg, where he lived until his death. His last extensive work was Kore ha-Dorot, a history of the Jewish people (1838). His other works include: Mattaei Kedem al Admat Zafon (1807), poetry; Amal ve-Tirzah (1812), an allegorical and utopian drama, a sequel to M.H. He maintained that one could remain identified with the Jewish nationality even if abandoning the Jewish religion. He urged the Jewish masses to participate in the class struggle as a national unit. Alone among the cosmopolitan Jewish socialists he favored national socialism. In 1897 he began publishing philosophical studies in Jewish history and a comprehensive program of action which later appeared in book form as Pisma o starom I novom yevreystvie ("Letters on Old and Modern Judaism, " 1907) . His main thesis was that national consciousness consists mainly of spiritual-cultural determinants and that these national characteristics can be maintained by the Jews in the future in the lands of their dispersion, just as they have survived the lack of territory or unity of language since the end of the second commonwealth. After emancipation of the individual the Jews as a group should be granted national self-government within the framework of the state along with other national minorities. His secularization of the national idea as opposed to those who saw the essence of Judaism in religion, and his optimistic view of the future of Judaism in the Diaspora, were the main underpinnings of his insistence on national cultural autonomy. Zhitlowsky was "in favor of the centrality of Yiddish in the national Jewish experience and labored toward the recognition of that language, and of those who lived out their lives in it, as one of the several cultural linguistic communities of Eastern Europe, and of the Western world as a whole" (Isaac Levitas, et al, in EJ) . " Gomez's Jewish affiliation resonates in the book with his decision to include a selection from The History of Pope Pius V, which is the source for the "pound of flesh" incident in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. As opposed to Shakespeare's telling, in the History of Pope Pius V, it is the Jew who is the victim and the Christian who threatens him. Gomez prefaced the selection by writing: "The following subject shows that Shakespeare altered the character of Shylock, making him to be of the Jewish nation, when in reality he was not. " As Louis Harap notes (The Image of the Jew in American Literature, p. 260) , "Gomez was obviously trying to combat the effects of the Shylock stereotype. " Isaac Gomez (1768-1831) , whose great-grandfather had fled from Portugal to New York in 1703, was active in New York's Jewish community. Following in the tradition of fellow musicologist Professor Abraham Tzvi Idelsohn, whom he greatly admired, Rabinovitch used the Keneder Adler as a platform to share his love for Jewish music, writing widely about it and contributing to the status and knowledge of hazzanut (cantorial arts) in Canada. In 1940, Rabinovitch published the book Muzik bai Yidn (Music by Jews) , which was translated from Yiddish into English by A. M. Klein in 1952 under the title Jewish Music: Ancient and Modern.
Rabinovitch was one of the founders of the Jewish Public Library, a leader in the Labour Zionist group Poale Zion, and also the first president of the Jewish Music Council of Montreal. He passed away in Montreal in 1964. As Cantor Nathan Mendelson of the Shaar Hashomayim wrote in his obituary of Rabinovitch, his song, the song of our people remains eternal. Om. Rosa Sutzkever was one of the best-known artists of Vilna, and had trained at the Art Academy there (Bogen, 1991) and was part of Yung Vilna. Yung-Vilne (Young Vilna) , was a Yiddish literary group, introduced in the daily Vilner Tog in 1929 with the headline: Young Vilna Marches into Yiddish Literature. It aroused excitement through its miscellanies (Yung-Vilne, 193436) , its contributions to local and international Yiddish journals, and individual books of verse and fiction. Principal members included poets Chaim Grade , Shimshon Kahan, Peretz Miransky, Abraham Sutzkever , Elkhanan Wogler, and Leyzer Wolf , prose writers Shmerke Kaczerginski and Moyshe Levin, and artists Bentsie Mikhtom and Rokhl Sutzkever. Dozens more were associated with the group, whose members were united by generation, place, a shared humanistic orientation, and the encouragement of local intellectuals like Zalman Rejzen and Max Weinreich . A Yung-Vilne evening in the Vilna ghetto, the participation of several members in the partisan underground, and the accomplishments of Grade and Sutzkever as leading postwar Yiddish writers assure that Yung-Vilne will be remembered as one of the great incubators of Jewish creativity in interwar Poland (Lipzin & Cammy, 2007) . The city had hosted numerous similar rallies over the previous decade all focused on building opposition to Hitler and support for the struggling Jews of Europe. <br> <br> Beginning on March 4 1934 "One year after Hitler's ascension to power in Germany tens of thousands of New Yorkers gathered at Madison Square Garden to hear the words of Rabbi Stephen Wise. 'Despite the oceanic tragedy which has befallen us' Wise pronounced 'we Jews tonight joining in the chorus of civilization indict Hitlerism as humans as members of civilized society before the high court of human judgment.' <br> Wise's words resonated for audience members attending the rally that March night. Over the course of the evening they heard from a chorus of voices representing the American public self-identifying across different racial religious and ideological lines. Framed as a 'court' the speakers at the rally gathered to indict Hitler for his crimes against civilization an intentionally pointed term that would offend Nazi ideologues claiming to protect civilization through Aryan supremacy. This mock trial was part of a larger trend of American Jewish protest performances staged during the Third Reich that intended to garner support for the rescue of European Jews.<br> On March 27 the AJCongress American Jewish Congress successfully staged a rally titled Stop Hitler Now to an audience of twenty thousand Jews in Madison Square Garden. Outside of the Garden thirty-five thousand people stood protesting and ten thousand more marched through Brooklyn in solidarity. Simultaneous protests also occurred in major cities across the country. The United Press estimated that one million protesters participated in the nationwide demonstration that day. <br> In retaliation to the American uproar Hitler threatened a one-day boycott against German Jewish businesses to be resumed three days later if 'international protests' did not cease. From Morris Rosenfeld 3. 2nd i.e. 3 of Feb 1913.†<br> “Rosenfeld known as the ‘Poet Laureate of Labor’ was a pioneer of Yiddish poetry in the US. Born in Russian Poland he came to New York by way of London in 1889 and worked as a presser in a sweatshop. His sweatshop songs were often sung by Jewish workers in factories and at mass meetings. Moshe Starkman notes in the EJ that when his Lider-Bukh ‘The Book of Songs’ 1897 was translated in 1898 by Leo Wiener under the title Songs from the Ghetto his fame spread to non-Yiddish circles. Starkman also notes that ‘his proletarian poems and national songs stirred the Jewish masses during their early struggles in the New World and at the beginning of the Jewish national renascence’ sic. Complete first volume Starting with Vol I Nr 1 of “Der Kibitser†Dec. 15 1908 renamed and renumbered first as Vol I Nr 1 Jan 22 1909 of “Der Groyser Kibetser The big kibetzer†with the following issue of Feb 5 numbered as "3" to correctly follow from the first issue and then with Vol I Nr 6 March 19 1909 onward as “Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick†or “The Big Prankster.†Incidentally the other set of this volume we examined also did not have a Nr 2 so we are confident this is complete as issued. <br> One centerfold cartoon by Zuni Maud see image features "Der Kaptialistisher Tayfel"--the Capitalist Devil–holding back a "mother" by the hair to stop her from interfering as "baby's milk-bottle" is drained off by the "milk-trust" cat. <br> The caption reads "The Capitalist Devil: - to the mother: Never mind madam all in English in Hebrew letters you go to the factory the milk-trust will take good care of your baby."<br> This cartoon-laden periodical was a New York City Yiddish language satirical bi- weekly which ran from 1908 until 1927.<br> The humor paper was issued biweekly this volume for its first 20 months and then weekly after that. OCLC also references another Vol I Nr 1 from April 15 1908 a special S´imhes` Toyreh Simchas Torah issue but this may have been a one-off. <br> Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel or Der Tunkeler his pen name meaning 'The Dark One' the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. The paper consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts.Naturally more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The later 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah. <br> Despite its irreverent attitude to everything it also published poetry by Di Yunge "The Young Ones" poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. Malden the poet’s home town just outside of Boston and clearly the home of the "Maldener Relief Komite" makes much more sense making this is the first documented yiddish publication in Malden MA north of Boston.<br> "The poet dedicated the entire income of 5 thousand copies to the brothers suffering from hunger in the countries at war†Translated from the front cover. In Yiddish with English section and title page: Ten years Artef; published for the tenth anniversary of the Artef March 1937. <br> Extensively illustrated publication for the tenth year anniversary of the radical Yiddish theatre company Artef:<br> "the radical Yiddish dramatic troupe based in New York during the heyday of the Yiddish theater in America. Begun in the mid-1920s as a study group of amateur worker-actors at one time there were nine separate studios with over 120 students in the 1930s the troupe went professional putting on at least two and often three new plays per season. With such plays as Jacob Mostel 's Strike Shmuel Godiner 's Jim Kooperkop Avrum Vevioka 's Diamonds and Maxim Gorky 's Egor Bulychev and Dostigaev and Others Artef spread propaganda to the masses. Ideologically Artef was far left; its hope was a Communist society here in America. As a troupe its role was 'agit-prop' to agitate and propagandize to serve as the cultural representative of radical workers. In fact most of its tickets were pre-sold through worker unions and at least in its early years Artef gave presentations at political events.<br> Its first large-scale production was Mass Play and Ballet of the Russian Revolution which appeared at the Lenin memorial celebration in Madison Square Garden on January 21 1928. <br> Artef 's greatest artistic and commercial successes were connected with the talented productions of director Benno Schneider. Schneider who had been active in the Zionist Habima troupe in Moscow wed aesthetic excellence to revolutionary ideology with his interpretation of Aristocrats an adaptation of Sholem Aleichem 's Mentshn. Incidentally Schneider earned such a positive reputation with Artef that he received offers to direct on Broadway a promotion that cost the radical Yiddish theater dearly. <br> The end of the Artef was gradual and its causes were closely associated with the reduced role of Yiddish in American life. But there were bright lights before the darkness. During the 'days of the Popular Front ' when the Communists formed associations with less radical leftist parties the Artef attracted a larger audience which led to an optimistic expansion that later was responsible for huge financial losses. The darkness occurred at the end of the thirties when the number of Yiddish speakers began to diminish. The last performance of the Artef was on July 7 1941." Title translates roughly as “Challenge: A Literary Artistic and Critical Bibliographical Journal.â€<br> At the time the only Yiddish literary periodical in Ukraine.<br> Farmest 1933–1937 was a monthly Yiddish literary magazine published in Kharkhiv Ukraine by the Ukrainian Committee for Soviet Writers. “Edited by the poet Itsik Fefer 1900–1952 it was continued in Sovetishe literatur: Literarish-kinstlerisher un kritish-bibliografisher zhurnal Soviet Literature: Literary-Artistic and Critical-Bibliographical Journal; 1938–1941.<br> In 1927 Fefer was a founding member of the Jewish Section of the All-Ukrainian Union of Proletarian Writers and from 1928 one of the editors of its Kharkov-based journal Prolit Proletarian Literature. He also coedited the nonproletarian Kharkov journal Di royte velt The Red World from 1929. From 1933 to 1937 he edited the Kiev periodical Farmest Challenge; known as Sovetishe literatur Soviet Literature between 1938 and 1941 which replaced Prolit and Di royte velt and was thereafter the only Yiddish literary periodical in Ukraine.†YIVO. Avrom Gontar was also involved in the collective and editorial committee. <br> The editor Itsik Fefer 1900–1952 “began writing poems in 1918 and in 1922 joined Vidervuks New Growth in Kiev a group of young Yiddish literati whose mentor was Dovid Hofshteyn. That same year the appearance of Fefer’s small collection Shpener Splinters established him as a rising literary star. His poetry amalgamated the Kultur-lige poets’ revolutionary romanticism with the propagandist objectives of the workers’ movement.<br> Fefer was known for his literary credo of proste reyd simple speech a concept he formulated in 1922. In the early 1920s poetry particularly avant-garde poetry swamped the literary pages of Soviet Yiddish periodicals. This phenomenon worried editors and critics who were wary of the fact that Yiddish readers usually could not identify with this style of literature. All Yiddish readers by contrast could understand Fefer’s proste reyd.<br> In 1927 Fefer was a founding member of the Jewish Section of the All-Ukrainian Union of Proletarian Writers and from 1928 one of the editors of its Kharkov-based journal Prolit Proletarian Literature.
