Very Good Arabic Original brown half leather bindings in Egyptian style, raised six bands to spine, title gilt on the second, volume nos on fourth, and alphabetical with the historical content of the volumes on sixth compartments and "Mahmoud Al-Tawawî" name. Extremely rare first printed edition of the most comprehensive and complete corpus on Baghdad city, which includes Al-Baghdadi's first-hand account of the collection of hadiths, biographies, and his travels in the 11th century Baghdad in traditional "al-râwî" style. Al-Baghdadi is known as a Muslim traveler in the pursuit of knowledge who compiled hadiths and traveled to many Islamic cities. He was born on the 24th ?jumada II, 392 (1002) at Darzidjan, a large village on the west bank of the Tigris below Baghdad. The son of a khatib [i.e. preacher], he began his studies very early and spent his youth traveling in search of ?adith. In this way, he visited Basra, Nishapur, I?fahân, Hamadân, and Damascus. Finally settling in Baghdâd, he held the office of a kha?îb and this was the origin of the name al-Khatîb al-Bag_dadi. After completing his education, he spent more than twenty years of his time writing "Tarikh Baghdad". He finished his corpus in 444 AH [1052-53]. He was a fellow student of Rîsürrüesâ Ibn al-Muslima who was the vizier of the Abbasid caliph Kâim-Biemrillâh. The vizier took Khatib, whom he appreciated in the science of hadith, under his patronage. The Abbasid caliph, therefore, ordered Khatib to be given permission to take hadith lessons from him. Khatib started to narrate hadiths from "Tarikh Baghdad" to his students here in his house near the Nizâmiya Madrasa, on the other hand, he started to read the books for which he had permission to narrate from many teachers, also write the books he planned. Several years after, the Turkish commander Besasiri (?-1060), who was a supporter of the Fatimid Caliph Mustansir-Billâh, entered Baghdad with the encouragement of the Fatimid caliph, deposed the caliph, and killed Ibn al-Muslima. Some members of the Hanbali sect, who had a grudge against Khatib because of what they wrote against some Hanbalis in Tarikh Baghdad, started to disturb him by taking the opportunity to kill the vizier. Therefore, he had to flee to Damascus. In his masterpiece, Khatibi, in addition to his account and descriptions of the city during his time in Baghdad, 7831 figures of people in total who lived or came in Baghdad before 450 (1058), statesmen such as caliphs, viziers, commanders, poets, judges, and other professions. This is an alphabetical work giving information about biographies of these figures, but it starts with the name "Muhammad" referring to the Muslim prophet. The first volume is about the establishment of Baghdad in the pre-Islamic period, its conquest by the Muslims, and its history. This masterpiece of him, published in fourteen volumes, is the most comprehensive corpus written on Baghdad in the Islamic world including the city's topography, history, et alli. Very Good Arabic Original pictorial wrappers. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Arabic. 169, [1] p., many ills. First Beirut Edition and early edition in Arabic literature of this classic novel by Salih, who is one of Sudan's greatest authors of the twentieth century. The story is set in the fictional village of Wad Hamid, the same setting as Salih's famous Season of Migration to the North. It is a comic novella, centering on the unlikely nuptials of the town's eccentric Zein. Tall and odd-looking, with just two teeth in his mouth, Zein has made a reputation for himself as the man who falls in love over and over with girls who promptly marry other men, to the point where mothers seek him out in hopes that he will draw the eye of available suitors to their eligible daughters. "The Wedding of Zein" was made into a drama in Libya and won Kuwaiti filmmaker Khalid Siddiq an award at the Cannes Film Festival in the late 1970s. Some critics identify this novella may be considered part of the tradition of magical realism, although Salih considered it as a socialist realist one. Minor stains on cover and edges. Overall a good copy. Only two paper copies in OCLC in Library University of Amsterdam and Leiden University Library: 71470668. It's also the earliest edition in the OCLC.

Oasis of Honolulu requests the pleasure of your company at a Reception and Dance in honour of Imperial Potentate J. Putnam Stevens and Party on Monday April the third nineteen hundred and sixteen Moana Hotel eighth thirty P.M. On July 15 1915 Dr. Frederick R. Smith of Rochester N. Y. imperial potentate of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine who has ruled for the preceding year laid down the scepter of authority to J. Putnam Stevens of Portland Me. who had served as deputy imperial potentate. The J. Putnam Stevens Award is presented by the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisers Maine. This award given annually goes to that person who in the opinion of the selection committee has rendered outstanding service to the industry and community in the state of Maine. It is not intended to restrict the award only to agents but rather to recognize those people even outside the industry who have advanced the cause of the life insurance business. J. Putnam Stevens was born in Winthrop Maine on Nov. 24 1852. He was one of the pioneers in the life insurance industry. Not only did he exemplify all that is good in life insurance he also demonstrated how worthwhile a good life insurance agent can be to the community. The state can be proud of this great humanitarian and anyone receiving the J. Putnam Stevens' Award gains with it a rich heritage. Shriners International also commonly known as The Shriners or formerly known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine AAONMS is a Masonic society established in 1870 and is headquartered in Tampa Florida. Shriners International describes itself as a fraternity based on fun fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love relief and truth. There are approximately 350000 members from 196 temples chapters in the US Canada Brazil Bolivia Mexico Panama the Philippines Europe and Australia. The organization is best known for the Shriners Hospitals for Children that it administers and the red fezzes that members wear. The organization was previously known as "Shriners North America". The idea of a new fraternity for Masons stressing fun and fellowship was discussed. Walter M. Fleming and William J. Florence took the idea seriously enough to act upon it. Florence a world-renowned actor while on tour in Marseille was invited to a party given by an Arab diplomat. The entertainment was something in the nature of an elaborately staged musical comedy. At its conclusion the guests became members of a secret society. Florence took copious notes and drawings at his initial viewing and on two other occasions once in Algiers and once in Cairo. When he returned to New York in 1870 he showed his material to Fleming. Fleming created the ritual emblem and costumes. Florence and Fleming were initiated August 13 1870 and they initiated 11 other men on June 16 1871 In an effort to encourage membership at the June 6 1876 meeting of Mecca Temple the Imperial Grand Council of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America was created. Fleming was elected the first Imperial Potentate. After some other reworking by 1878 there were 425 members in 13 temples in eight states and by 1888 there were 7210 members in 48 temples in the United States and Canada.
