" His childhood and youth influenced his poetry - the fields and forests of Volhynia, the solitariness of his grandfather's house where he lived after his father died, and the yeshiva he went to in Volozhin. Other influences include Ahad Ha-Am, and Russian literature - which he began to read as he became disillusioned with the religiosity at the yeshiva, and further immersed himself in after leaving the yeshiva and going to Odessa. His first published work was the poem "El ha-Zippor, " which was published in 1892, in the first volume of Ha-Pardes. Later in life he lived also in Berlin, and settled in Palestine in 1924. It was produced by Franciscus II Raphelengius grandson of Christoffel Plantin and son of one of Europe's first great Hebrew scholars Plantin's son-in-law Franciscus I Raphelengius 1539-1597 who helped prepare Plantin's magnificent 1572 Polyglot Bible succeeded to the Leiden branch of Plantin's printing office and became professor of Hebrew at Leiden University. Plantin himself had produced the Dutch Republic's first Hebrew book there in 1585 and Raphelengius produced many more beginning in 1588.With occasional very minor foxing or faint discolouration but otherwise in very good condition. The spine and joints are worn with superficial cracks a repair at the head and a small tear at the foot and the sewing is slightly loose. Isaac Leeser 1806-1868 was named hazan cantor of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia in 1829. Leeser's "contributions to every area of Jewish culture and religion made him a major builder of American Judaism." The publication of his Pentateuch was the first time that any portion of the Bible was published in America under Jewish auspices. "The translation of the Bible was Leeser's great literary achievement and represented many years of patient labor and devotion to a task which he considered sacred . He made good use of the various German translations by Jews of the collective commentary known as the Biur and of other Jewish exegetic works. The Kennicott Bible.
London: Facsimile Editions 1985. Edition limited to 500 copies. Very Good/Fine facsimile of "Ms Kennicotti" held in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University a finely decorated manuscript of the Hebrew Bible that resembles in some ways the Book of Kells in the use of animal figures and and intricate marginal decorations although the style comes from the Ibero-Islamic tradition rather than the Celtic one. The manuscript was copied out twenty years prior to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 by Moshe Ibn Zabara and Yosef Ibn Chaim containing the entire Tanak together with the Radak commentary and Sefer HaMichlol. It is known as the "Kennicott Bible" after Benjamin Kennicot 1718-1783 the English clergyman and Hebraist who acquired the manuscript for Oxford University. An exceptionally beautiful facsimile five and a half years in the making it is printed on deluxe paper stock intended to reproduce the appearance of the original vellum. The gold highlights in the facsimile illustrations were applied by hand. The commentary by Bezalel Narkiss and Aliza Cohen-Mushlin provides a scholarly yet approachable historical context and artistic appreciation. Lipsiae: Ex officina Bernhardi Tauchnitz 1880. 8vo 22.4 cm 8.8". 1 f. 82 pp.; manuscript notes bound in. <br><br>This "textum masoreticum" book of psalms i.e. the traditional Hebrew text was edited by masoretic scholar Seligman Baer 1825�97 and theologian Franz Delitzsch 1813�90 as part of their Masoretic Bible series published by Tauchnitz between 1869 and 1895. A truly => unique copy this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge D.D. 1863�1916 a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts � annotated of course.<br> Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" 1911 including the Hebrew psalms.<br> Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moir� silk spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above pressure-stamp on title-page call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle dust- or sometimes soot-soiled at edges and prone to chipping.
