Prevelakis, Pandelis
The Cretan (a trilogy in one volume)
NEW - Will be sent to you direct from the publisher."Pandelis Prevelakis (1909-86), a major Greek writer, has produced over forty volumes of poetry, novels, plays, and essays ...Prevelakis has long been in the shadow of his close friend and fellow Cretan, Nikos Kazantzakis. It is time that Prevelakis's work be made known and independently appraised in the non-Greek world as it has been in the Greek. The English edition of his major work, The Cretan, is a step in that direction. In this Tolstoyan historical novel, Prevelakis offers a masterly presentation of the Cretan myth, with its peculiar Cretan ethos characterized by piety, austerity, frugality, dourness, sternness, punctuated by sudden outbursts of reckless daring. The Cretan is the story of Crete and its people struggling for individual and national liberation from Turkish rule, a struggle symbolized in the two main characters of the novel, the fictional Konstandis and the historical Venizelos, both figures of epic proportions. The Cretan is three books in one: The Tree, The First Freedom, and The State. And as its author explained, The Tree presents a young man, growing and maturing like a sapling in the local popular culture, which was closed and rudimentary, but self-sufficient. The First Freedom describes the struggles of the mature man together with his comrades to achieve national liberation. Lastly, The State depicts the national fighters sacrificing themselves for the second precondition of a decent life, in other words, a democratic state. The Cretan will delight readers who may have spent some time on Crete. It will, most likely, encourage those who have not been to Crete to plan for a visit there in the near future. In any event, it is absorbing reading ..." Book

Prevelakis,Eleutherios
British policy towards the change of dynasty in Greece, 1862-1863
Based on a thesis the author produced while at Oxford University this book discusses both the internal and international difficulties created by the forced abdication of King Otto and the ensuing negotiations in finding a possibly acceptable successor amongst the scions of some aspiring royal families of Europe. This analysis of British involvement also includes the transfer of the Ionian Islands to Greece. Eventually the " Greeks and Great Powers winnowed their choice to William of Denmark.Aged only 17, he was elected King of the Hellenes on 30 March1863 by the Greek National Assembly under the name of George I" 194p,. bibliography, index. Inscription on ffep." To Jack - El. Prevelakis". However the pages are uncut and it remains unread, but the paper covers show some wear and tear Book

Prins, Yopie
Victorian Sappho
"What is Sappho, except a name? Although the Greek archaic lyrics attributed to Sappho of Lesbos survive only in fragments, she has been invoked for many centuries as the original woman poet, singing at the origins of a Western lyric tradition. Victorian Sappho traces the emergence of this idealized feminine figure through reconstructions of the Sapphic fragments in late-nineteenth-century England. Yopie Prins argues that the Victorian period is a critical turning point in the history of Sappho's reception; what we now call "Sappho" is in many ways an artifact of Victorian poetics. Prins reads the Sapphic fragments in Greek alongside various English translations and imitations, considering a wide range of Victorian poets--male and female, famous and forgotten--who signed their poetry in the name of Sappho. By "declining" the name in each chapter, the book presents a theoretical argument about the Sapphic signature, as well as a historical account of its implications in Victorian England." xiii, 279p.illus. bibliography, index. Prior, William J.
VIRTUE AND KNOWLEDGE An Introduction to Ancient Greek Ethics
Bump near top of spine with small crease. ; This book focuses on the concept of virtue, and in particular on the virtue of wisdom or knowledge, as it is found in the epic poems of Homer, some tragedies of Sophocles, selected writings of Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers. The key questions discussed are the nature of the virtues, their relation to each other, and the relation between the virtues and happiness or well-being. There has been renewed interest recently in the concept of virtue. The value of William Prior's book is that it provides the background and interpretive framework to make classical works on ethics, such as Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "Nicomachean Ethics", accessible to readers with no training in the classics. ; 240 pages

ESSAYS IN GREEK HISTORY
Unwrapped in Plastic. ; 10 x 1 x 6.75 Inches; 340 pages; The Professor Emeritus of Greek at Berkeley offers six original papers, the titles of which are indicative of the contents: - The Alleged Battle of Oinoa. - The General's Exhortations in Greek Warfare. - The General on the Battlefield. - Thucydides and Pylos. - The Roads of Akarnania. - Circumventions of the Thermopylai Pass. These studies are a by-product of Pritchett's studies on Greek military practices and Greek topography, and will be of interest to students of Greek historiography, since all involve problems of text and the veracity of the historians. The three topographical chapters, which are based on extensive autopsy and include some new discoveries, are accompanied with photographs and sketchmaps.

Probert, Philomen
A New Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek
The original aim of this book was to provide an updated reprint of J.P. Postgate's "Short Guide to the Accentuation of Ancient Greek" (1924). It has developed considerably during the preparation, still including what was most useful in Postgate but now incorporating much additional material and information based on the latest scholarship. It is intended for those who have already learned some Greek but who wish to acquaint themselves with the workings of the accent system, either for the first time or by way of revision. An introductory part outlines clearly the evidence for our knowledge of Greek accentuation and quotes some of our ancient sources for the sound of the accent. The remainder of the book is designed to facilitate the learning of the accents themselves. Exercises are included throughout. 215p. index Book
