‎SPARTAN WAR FUND‎

‎2 small Creases along spine. Signed by author to Christian Habicht on ffep. ; Historia - Einzelschriften; 83 pages; A new and expanded text, with translation, of the best-known Spartan inscription (Meiggs & Lewis no. 67), together with detailed epigraphical, textual, historical and economic commentaries. The new text is based on a fresh examination of the stone, the diaries of early travellers (who saw the stone when it was better preserved than it is today), and a newly discovered fragment, which adds Aiginetan and Chian exiles, and individual Achaians and Spartans, to the list of Sparta's war supporters. This new text enables the date of the inscription, previously controversial, to be fixed in the early years of the Peloponnesian War, thereby shedding light on Spartan war-finance and Greek attitudes towards Athens in the 420s and providing a badly-needed fixed point for Laconian Epigraphy. The monograph also clarifies the meaning of the Greek words opheugoo, ophugaso.; Signed by Author‎

‎THE EXPERIENCES OF TIRESIAS The Feminine and the Greek Man‎

‎Former owner's name to ffep. Pencil marginalia and underlining to a few pages. Else very minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has light shelfwear with 1 tiny chip to head of spine. ; In The Experiences of Tiresias, its title referring to the shepherd struck blind after glimpsing Athena's naked body, Nicole Loraux explores the ambivalence in how the Greek male defines himself in relationship to the feminine. In these essays, Loraux disturbs the idea of virile men and feminine women, a distinction found in official discourse and aimed at protecting the ideals of male identity from any taint of the feminine. Turning to epic and to Socrates, however, she insists on a logic of an inclusiveness between the genders, which casts a shadow over their clear, officially defined borders. "Nicole Loraux documents, with delicate sensitivity to text and context, the mobility of the contrast between 'man' and 'the feminine. '... [Her] readings of tragedy are particularly compelling. "--Mary Margaret McCabe, The Times Literary Supplement "Loraux is a pioneer in the analysis of gender difference and sexuality in classical Greece. Strongly opposed to polarized interpretations of 'masculine' and 'feminine, ' she illuminates the complex and often contradictory interrelationship of the sexes in real life and in the Greek/Athenian social 'imaginary. ‎THE INVENTION OF ATHENS The Funeral Oration in the Classical City‎

‎A couple of Corners are lightly bumped. Very light pen notes to ffep and 1 page (word crossed out) with pencil notes and underlining to a couple of pages. Dustsoiling to top of textblock. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear. DJ spine is a little browned. ; 512 pages; How does the funeral oration relate to democracy in ancient Greece? How did the death of an individual citizen-soldier become the occasion to praise the city of Athens? In The Invention of Athens, Nicole Loraux traces the different rhetoric, politics, and ideology of funeral orations--epitaphioi--from Thucydides, Gorgias, Lysias, and Demosthenes to Plato. Arguing that the ceremony of public burial began circa 508-460 BCE, Loraux demonstrates that the institution of the funeral oration developed under Athenian democracy. A secular, not a religious phenomenon, a literary genre with fixed rhetoric effects, the funeral oration was inextricably linked to the epainos--praise of the city--rather than to a ritualized lament for the dead as is commonly assumed. Above all, the funeral oration celebrated the city of Athens and the Athenian citizen. Loraux interprets the speeches from literary, anthropological, and political perspectives. She explains how these acts of secular speech invented an image of Athens often at odds with the presumed ideals of democracy. To die in battle for the city was presented as an act of civic choice--the "fine" death that defined the citizen-soldier's noble, aristocratic ethos. At the same time, the funeral oration cultivated an image of democracy at a time when there was, for example, no formal theory of a respect for law and liberty, the supremacy of the collective and public over the individual and the private, or freedom of speech.‎

‎THE CHILDREN OF ATHENA Athenian Ideas About Citizenship and the Division Between the Sexes‎

‎Very minor shelfwear. Spine slightly sunned. Scholar's initial to inner cover (Jenifer Neils). ; According to one myth, the first Athenian citizen was born from the earth after the sperm of a rejected lover, the god Hephaistos, dripped off the virgin goddess Athena's leg and onto fertile soil. Henceforth Athenian citizens could claim to be truly indigenous to their city and to have divine origins that bypassed maternity. In these essays, the renowned French Hellenist Nicole Loraux examines the implication of this and other Greek origin myths as she explores how Athenians in the fifth century forged and maintained a collective identity. ; 296 pages‎

‎EPIC SINGERS AND ORAL TRADITION‎

‎Light Foxing/dustsoiling to textblock. Light foxing to endpapers. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). ; Albert Bates Lord here offers an unparalleled overview of the nature of oral-traditional epic songs and the practices of the singers who composed them. Shaped by the conviction that theory should be based on what singers actually do, and have done in times past, the essays collected here span half a century of Lord's research on the oral tradition from Homer to the twentieth century. Drawing on his extensive fieldwork in living oral traditions and on the theoretical writings of Milman Parry, Lord concentrates on the singers and their art as manifested in texts of performance. In thirteen essays, some previously unpublished and all of them revised for book publication, he explores questions of composition, transmittal, and interpretation and raises important comparative issues. Individual chapters discuss aspects of the Homeric poems, South Slavic oral-traditional epics, the songs of Avdo Metedovic, Beowulf and Anglo-Saxon poetry, the medieval Greek Digenis Akritas and other medieval epics, central Asiatic and Balkan epics, the Finnish Kalevala, and the Bulgarian oral epic. ; Myth And Poetics; 9.1 X 6.3 X 0.9 inches; 280 pages‎

‎" For many of us who have no Greek, Chapman's Odyssey opens up, ... a new world of experience; and in spite of Matthew Arnold's strictures, it remains the most poetically alive of all Homeric translations. But how far does it give us the original Homer? Chapman claimed that he had a vision of the Odyssey's true meaning. ‎Aegean Notebooks : Reflections By Sea and Land‎

‎Zissimos Lorenzatos (1915-2004), essayist, thinker and poet, was arguably Greece's most significant man of letters in the twentieth century. In the Aegean Notebooks, a record of his observations and reflections while sailing among the Greek islands in the 1970s and 1980s, the special quality of his literary and philosophical gifts, and of the man himself, are vividly present. Along with everything a mariner yearns to bring ashore, all he has felt and experienced at sea with the wake of the boat unfurling behind him, Lorenzatos brings us in addition a lifetime's learning and contemplation. For him, life, and the living of it, was of the essence. As he observes in his foreword to these notebooks: '. . . life itself writes nothing, it erases everything that is written about it, and simply, irreplaceably lives, like the inaccessible "well of water springing up".''Zissimos Lorenzatos was the wisest Greek critic of his generation, and he left us a legacy of elegant thinking that extended beyond literature to the broader issues at the center of the human heart.' Edmund Keeley, Charles Barnwell Straut Professor of English Emeritus, Princeton University. 138 pages, with a fold-out map of the Aegean, Denise Harvey , Book‎

‎Louden, Bruce‎

‎THE ODYSSEY Structure, Narration, and Meaning‎

‎Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 0.98 x 9.37 x 6.31 Inches; 208 pages; Bruce Louden's bold re-reading of the Odyssey -- the first attempt in years to map in detail the poem's overall structure -- offers new insights into the artistry of Odysseus' mythic voyage and enriches our understanding of Homer's masterful craftsmanship. Louden's groundbreaking work uncovers an extended narrative pattern, repeated in full three times, which reveals the poem's underlying skeletal structure. This organizational analysis helps to explain the existence of several characters or episodes sometimes dismissed as extraneous, as late additions, or even as corruptions to Homer's original intent. In addition, Louden's discovery strengthens the suggestion that the Odyssey was the product of oral tradition. By repeating this sequence of successive motifs, a single, improvising bard could explore a variety of complex ideas within a poem as long as the Odyssey. Though centrally concerned with the form of Homer's rich and complex plot, Louden's study is not exclusively, or even primarily, formalistic. His investigation involves the study of characters' names, challenges faced by Odysseus, the structure of the poem, and roles assigned to the poem's female characters. Louden's comprehensive achievement gives the reader a fresh perspective on the role of divine hostility and the artistry of an epic survivor on his timeless journey home.‎
