A very comprehensive illustrated study on Turkish photographer, Hamza Rüstem, (1872-1971), who was born in Crete. Beside him, Rahmizâde Bahaeddin Bey (Bahaettin Rahmi Bediz, Rahmi Bediz after the 1934 - Law on Family Names in Turkey) was a Cretan Turk who is generally agreed by historians to be the first Turkish photographer by profession. He was a first photographer of archaeologist Evans' Knossos excavations. He started his career in Hanya, Crete in 1895, and went on to open photography studios in Izmir in 1910, in Istanbul in 1915 where he acquired his fame, and in Ankara after 1935 where, aside from his private business, he worked as the Chief of Photography Department in Turkish Historical Society. The thousands of photographs (especially portraits) he took during his career (Crete, Izmir, Istanbul, Ankara) have immense historical value. Before Hamza Rüstem was a photographer was trading some goods near English camp in Crete. Bediz discovered him in Crete as a trader, and he hand his photograph studio to Hamza Rüstem on in Constantinople, Istanbul after Second Constitution, 1909. Bediz was a first Muslim photographer who opened a studio in Ottoman geography according photographic literature. This book includes many postcards which photographed by Bediz, biography of Hamza Rüstem and sons and corporate history of his studio.

He joined his older brother Michael in Constantinople where he embarked upon a political career and became an important civil servant. As governor of Thrace he was personally involved in the events relating to Frederick Barbarossa's passage through Thrace during the Third Cusade in 1189 when he lost his province to the Germans.A major work with an eyewitness account of the disastrous capture and sack of Constantinople by soldiers of the Fourth Crusade in 1204.It was written probably between 1204 and 1210 and it is to this work that his fame as an historian of medieval Constantinople rests. Covering the period from 1180 to 1206 it is practically an account of the fateful reigns of the last of the Comneni especially the vicissitudes of the royal city during the Fourth Crusade 1204; its siege capture and pillage by the Latin Christians. In spite of its florid and bombastic style it is of considerable value as a record and for its time on the whole impartial of events of which he was either eyewitness or had heard of first hand. Its most interesting portion is the description of the capture of Constantinople.Nicephorus Gregoras c.1295-1360 Byzantine historian man of learning and religious controversialist was the source of the third part and constitutes a continuation of the Neicetas Choniates' History of Constqantinople. The work examines the period 1118-1206 covering the reigns of the last Comneni and the capture of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The Fourth Crusade was directed at Egypt. There were however a series of financial difficulties that enabled the Venetians who had been hired as transportation providers to divert the crusade to their own ends. First it attacked the Christian city of Zara and then Constantinople itself. The result was the establishment of a series of Latin states in Greece and the Agean and the permanent collapse of communion between Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Bound with this volume is Gregoras' work continuing the history from 1204 to 1359.Both works were translated in the main by Lodovico Dolce 1508-1568 the editor of Giolito's 1555 edition of Dante with further additions by Agostino Ferentilli all produced under the eye of the great venetian publisher Gabriel Giolitho. This volume examines cinematic representations of ancient Greek women from the realms of myth and history. It discusses how these female figures are resurrected on the big screen by different filmmakers during different historical moments, and are therefore embedded within a narrative which serves various purposes, depending on the director of the film, its screenwriters, the studio, the country of its origin, and the sociopolitical context at the time of its production. Using a diverse array of hermeneutic approaches (such as gender theory, feminist criticism, psychoanalysis, viewer-response theory, and personal voice criticism) , the essays aim to cast light on cinema's investments in the classical past and decode the mechanisms whereby the women under examination are extracted from their original context and are brought to life to serve as vehicles for the articulation of modern ideas, concerns, and cultural trends.
