‎POPE, HOMER AND MANLINESS Some Aspects of Eighteenth-Century Classical Learning‎

‎240 pages; The conflict between masculine and feminine values in 18th century classical learning is problematic and controversial. In this book, Pope's Homer becomes a richly complex focus for new, gendered explorations into the nature of the masculine "rule". As the subject of this gendered reading, Pope's Homer emerges as the fissured relic of a struggle to preserve masculine dignity from the encroachments of feminine characters and values within the text, and of female readers and critics. This text brings a fresh viewpoint and much detailed research on classical and early modern literature to bear on gender studies' central issues, revealing that "masculinity" must here be seen not as an absolute standard, but as the product of unceasing conflict between competing and unstable models.‎

‎Sappho's Immortal Daughters‎

‎She lived on the island of Lesbos around 600 B.C.E. She composed lyric poetry, only fragments of which survive. And she was--and is--the most highly regarded woman poet of Greek and Roman antiquity. Little more than this can be said with certainty about Sappho, and yet a great deal more is said. Her life, so little known, is the stuff of legends; her poetry, the source of endless speculation. This book is a search for Sappho through the poetry she wrote, the culture she inhabited, and the myths that have risen around her. It is an expert and thoroughly engaging introduction to one of the most enduring and enigmatic figures of antiquity. Margaret Williamson conducts us through ancient representations of Sappho, from vase paintings to appearances in Ovid, and traces the route by which her work has reached us, shaped along the way by excavators, editors, and interpreters. She goes back to the poet's world and time to explore perennial questions about Sappho: How could a woman have access to the public medium of song? What was the place of female sexuality in the public and religious symbolism of Greek culture? What is the sexual meaning of her poems? Williamson follows with a close look at the poems themselves, Sappho's "immortal daughters." 196p.plates bibliography. index Book‎

‎THE FOUR GOSPELS OF KARAHISSAR Volume II: the Cycle of Text Illustrations‎

‎Former owner's name on inner cover. Mild browning to ffeps. Very light shelfwear to book. DJ is tattered with open tears & missing a few pieces but mostly complete. ; The Four Gospels of Karahissar is a thirteenth-century codex of the four Gospels in Greek, written in distinguished miniscule script, illustrated with 65 terse miniatures, and introduced by 7 elegant decorative arcades. Iconographically and stylistically its large cycle of text illustrations ranks in importance easily among the first half-dozen sequences miniatured in tetraevangelia. It stands at the very center of an extended, prominent, and singularly interesting family of medieval Greek manuscripts, very intimately related to each other and historically associated with the vicissitudes and policies of the imperial family of Byzantium. ; Volume 2 Only; Vol. 2‎

‎EMIGRATION FROM ITALY IN THE REPUBLICAN AGE OF ROME‎

‎Ex-library copy with one single institution stamp to title-page and pocket with discard stamp to endpage. Minor fading to spine. ; 208 pages; During the last two centuries of the Roman Republic emigration from Italy to the provinces was widespread and increasing. This book is the first to survey the movement throughout the Empire; the emphasis is on private rather than state-organised settlement. The first part is about the Western Mediterranean provinces, whose Romanization began in this period; the second part treats emigration to the Greek East, where, by contrast, the settlers tended to become more and more hellenized. The principal matters considered are the volume of emigration, the kinds of communities formed overseas by the emigrants, their motives and origins, the regions and places settled, the fortunes of the settlers in the upheavals of the late Republican period, and their relations with the people among whom they lived.‎

‎RANSOM, REVENGE, AND HEROIC IDENTITY IN THE ILIAD‎

‎Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Wilson examines the nature of compensation--ransom and revenge--in the Iliad, offering a fundamentally new reading of the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles. She presents a detailed anthropology of compensation in Homer, located in the wider context of agonistic exchange, to demonstrate how the struggle over definitions is a central feature of elite competition for status in the zero-sum and fluid ranking system of Homeric society. The study thus asserts the integral role of compensation in the traditional, cultural and poetic matrix of this foundational epic. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 250 pages‎

‎THE GREEK THEATRE AND FESTIVALS Documentary Studies‎

‎Minor bumping. Light shelfwear to DJ and book. ; A collection of essays, by leading international scholars, on the history of the Greek theatre, and on the wider context of festival culture in which theatrical activity took place in the Greek world. The emphasis is on the documentary material - inscriptions, archaeological remains and monuments - which provides so much of our 'hard' evidence for the activities of the theatre. Much of the important material discussed here is unknown except to specialists, and these studies offer access to its interpretation to a wider audience. They cover a wide range of time and place, from the earliest days of the Greek theatre to the Roman period, with special emphasis on the neglected Hellenistic period, which is especially rich in documentary evidence. ; Oxford Studies In Ancient Documents; 8.6 X 5.7 X 1.2 inches; 400 pages‎

Today's state of the art is reflected in the volume's contents which include editions and reeditions of texts, and papers in the many areas of classical antiquity in which our knowledge has been so immeasurably enriched by the discovery and decipherment of Greek and Latin papyri, viz. Language, government, social and economic history, law, private life. Some of the papers also have interdisciplinary ramifications, and the international cooperation that has characterised papyrology from its inception is here readily apparent in the names, languages and affiliations of the contributors.‎

‎Spine a little creased. 1 corner lightly creased. Light pencil marginalia to a few pages. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover. ; 0.94 x 8.82 x 5.91 Inches; 358 pages; In this interpretation of the seven extant tragedies of Sophocles, Professor Winnington-Ingram provides not so much a straightforward account of Sophocles as an exploration of his tragic vision of the world. The Sophoclean hero lies at the centre of this vision. Taking the plays individually but without losing sight of the single consistent mind behind them, the author faces the questions of how the hero is to be regarded, what we are to make of the fates he suffered and the divine powers who controlled those fates. He proceeds by a detailed study of what Sophocles wrote, by close attention to form and recurrent themes, and especially by close analysis of a number of choral odes. Students of Greek drama will find that this detailed study provides invaluable insights into the meaning of the tragedies. Greek in the text is translated or paraphrased, so that the book will also be of interest to students of the literature and drama of other cultures.‎

‎STUDIES IN AESCHYLUS‎

‎Very light wear to corners. ; Professor Winnington-Ingram's reputation as an authority on Greek drama is based on a lifetime's careful scholarship. In 1980 the Press published Professor Winnington-Ingram's book on Sophocles and in 1983 he followed it up with some studies on Aeschylus. This book explores the problems in Aeschylus' earlier plays: Persae, Septem contra Thebas and the Daniad trilogy. There is also an emphasis on different aspects of the Oresteia and finally, an examination of the peculiar problems in Prometheus Bound. A view of Aeschylean tragedy emerges - and of the poet's contribution to the development of Greek religious thought. Students of Greek drama will welcome this collection. Greek in the body of the text is translated, so that the book will be accessible to those studying Greek literature in translation and the literature and drama of other cultures. ; Cambridge Paperback Library; 240 pages‎

‎DIE LINKE HAND Wahrnehmung Und Bewertung in Der Griechischen Und Römischen Antike‎

‎Very light rubbing else Fine. ; Heidelberger Althistorische Beitrage Und Epigraphische Studien Band 47; Vol. 47; 283 pages; English summary: Human perception includes the division of space into left and right. In general, left holds a negative connotation: A clumsy man appears linkisch in German, links meaning left, and the term translates as awkward. If you conned him, he has been gelinkt. For a long time this negative coloring was also closely associated with the image of left-handers: Left-handers were often regarded as disabled, appeared awkward and antisocial, and were exposed to discrimination. To understand the people of ancient Greece and Rome, one must understand the role right and left played in their perception and evaluation of the world. Henning Wirth studies the following questions from an ancient historical perspective: How did the Greeks and Romans perceive left? What role was provided to the left hand in a dominantly right-handed world, where the right hand attested Godly effectiveness? And how does one explain the phenomenon of left-handedness and assessment of left-handed people? German text.
