‎Conacher, D.J.‎

‎AESCHYLUS: THE EARLIER PLAYS AND RELATED STUDIES‎

‎0.75 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 194 pages; This volume complements D. J. Conacher's two earlier studies of Aeschylus, Aeschylus' `Prometheus Bound' (1980) and Aeschylus' `Oresteia' (1987) , and completes his literary commentary on the extant plays of Aeschylus. In this volume Conacher provides a detailed running commentary on the three earlier plays (The Persians, The Seven against Thebes, and The Suppliants) , as well as an analysis of their themes, structure and dramatic techniques and devices. In two more general studies he reviews Aeschylus' dramatic uses of the chorus and of imagery. Conacher's close readings of the text and sensitive analysis of the main problems in the plays will be of benefit to students, especially those encountering these plays for the first time, either in Greek or in translation. He also provides a thorough overview of the various interpretative and philological problems and opinions encountered in Aeschylean scholarship, which will be of interest to senior scholars as well as students.‎

‎The Border Surrounds Us‎

‎Poetry by young Canadian writer who lives part of the time in Greece. " Karen Connelly's fourth collection of poetry is remarkable in its energy, courage, and resounding depth. Connelly is a poet rare in her ability to address the political from within the realm of personal experience. Moving among the haunted refugees and political dissidents on the Thai-Burmese border, retelling the stories of Greek peasants, negotiating the borders between home and exile, Connelly brings to all her poetry a passion for being fully alive, engaged with the world as both participant and witness." 110p. ‎Connolly, Peter & Hazel Dodge‎

‎THE ANCIENT CITY Life in Classical Athens and Rome‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Creasing to lower corner of rear wraps. ; In this superbly illustrated volume, Athens and Rome, the two greatest cities of antiquity, spring to life through the masterful pen of Peter Connolly. For the first time ever, all the evidence has been painstakingly pieced together to reconstruct the architectural wonders of these mighty civilizations. By re-creating their public buildings, their temples, shops, and houses, Connolly reveals every aspect of a person's life in glorious detail, including religion, food, drama, games, and the baths. The first part of The Ancient City covers the development of Athens in the hundred years following the Persian Wars, which began in the 4th century B. C. These chapters encompass the Golden Years of Athens; the establishment of democracy; the building of the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, and the municipal buildings of the Agora; a typical Athenian workday; and the construction of the Long Walls. Part II examines the development of Rome in the hundred years from Nero (emperor of Rome from A. D. 54 to 68) to Hadrian (emperor of Rome from A. D. 117 to 138) --the great building period of Rome. Visit Nero's Golden Palace and the buildings subsequently built over it, the Colosseum, the Flavian Palace, the Baths of Trajan, the Temple of Venus and Roma, as well as other buildings such as the Circus Maximus, the Theatre of Marcellus, and Trajan's Forum and Market. In addition to reading about the great monuments and moments of classical Greece and Rome, readers learn about a typical day in the life of an Athenian and a Roman. They read about--and see--the houses people inhabited; attend 5-day festivals and go to the theatre; fight great battles and witness the birth of Rome's navy; visit temples and spend a day at the races. The fascinating artwork and vivid descriptions provide a window into the great history of these two extraordinary cities and civilizations. The Ancient City is the crowning achievement of Peter Connolly's distinguished career. His illustrations and reconstructions have a unique authority, providing the starting point for a fascinating exploration of these cities and the lives of the people who inhabited them. ; 11.1 X 9.0 X 1.0 inches; 256 pages‎

‎THE NEW POLITICIANS OF FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS‎

‎Light shelfwear to book. DJ has light chipping. DJ a bit yellowed. DJ is price-clipped. ; 218 pages; After the death of Pericles, a new breed of politicians--men like Cleon, Cleophon, and Hyperbolus--came to power in Athens. Rejecting the traditional source of political support, the bonds of friendship (philia) , in favor of direct appeals to the people (demos) , they signaled the emergence of a new pattern of politics. The author traces the development of this new pattern--often misunderstood, often branded "demagogy" by both ancient and modern writers--by investigating the nature of political and social organization in Athens and the vocabulary of Greek politics.‎

‎THE CAMBRIDGE ANCIENT HISTORY Volume of Plates II Prepared by C. T. Seltman‎

‎Ex-library copy (non-circulating reference) with usual stamps, call numbers. Else VG. ; Cambridge Ancient History Series; 121 pages; This book of plates can be used either as a companion to Volume IV or as an independent, illustrated account of the period, and of the evidence of Greek civilization and culture as it encountered the Persian empire and struggled for its freedom. Detailed commentary accompanies a full pictoral survey of the art and archaeology of the Persian empire and its provinces, from Thrace to India. The section on Greece concentrates on late Archaic Athens, immediately before the Persian wars, and considers cultural progress as evidence of various aspects of Greek life and society. The fortunes of the Western Greek colonial area and of the Etruscan and Italic peoples are similarly treated. The volume concludes with a study of the invention of coinage and its use throughout Greece and Persia.‎

‎THE SANCTUARY OF HEMITHEA AT KASTABOS‎

‎DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 23pp of photos, 78 figures. "This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor, and the discovery of the site of Kastabos, whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history, has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself, whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. , was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short, well attended festival. The excavations show that, although it was an Ionic temple, the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia (such as that at Ephesus) has been modified and the design is somewhat similar, in plan and proportion, to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular, the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes." ; 180 pages‎

‎The Elgin Marbles‎

‎The Parthenon sculptures collected by Lord Elgin nearly 200 years ago rank amongst the highest achievements of mankind. Since they went on display in the British Museum in 1817, artists, scholars, poets and millions of visitors have stood before them in wonder. This book tells their story, beginning in the fifth century BC when the Parthenon was built in Athens. The author explains what the sculptures represent, who made them and how they fitted into the grand design of the temple. He describes their gradual destruction by religious zealots, beseiging Venetians and other vandals before Lord Elgin brought them to the safety of London. 72p. illus.index. Book‎
