‎The Hebrew Republic: Jewish Sources and the Transformation of European Political Thought‎

‎8vom 240pp. According to a commonplace narrative, the rise of modern political thought in the West resulted from secularizationthe exclusion of religious arguments from political discourse. But in this pathbreaking work, Eric Nelson argues that this familiar story is wrong. Instead, he contends, political thought in early-modern Europe became less, not more, secular with time, and it was the Christian encounter with Hebrew sources that provoked this radical transformation. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Christian scholars began to regard the Hebrew Bible as a political constitution designed by God for the children of Israel. Newly available rabbinic materials became authoritative guides to the institutions and practices of the perfect republic. This thinking resulted in a sweeping reorientation of political commitments. In the books central chapters, Nelson identifies three transformative claims introduced into European political theory by the Hebrew revival: the argument that republics are the only legitimate regimes; the idea that the state should coercively maintain an egalitarian distribution of property; and the belief that a godly republic would tolerate religious diversity. One major consequence of Nelsons work is that the revolutionary politics of John Milton, James Harrington, and Thomas Hobbes appear in a brand-new light. Nelson demonstrates that central features of modern political thought emerged from an attempt to emulate a constitution designed by God. This paradox, a reminder that while we may live in a secular age, we owe our politics to an age of religious fervor, in turn illuminates fault lines in contemporary political discourse.‎

‎Communities of Violence: Persecution of Minorities in the Middle Ages: Persecution of Minorities in the Middle Ages‎

‎8vo, br. ed. pp.301. In the wake of modern genocide, we tend to think of violence against minorities as a sign of intolerance, or, even worse, a prelude to extermination. Violence in the Middle Ages, however, functioned differently, according to David Nirenberg. In this provocative book, he focuses on specific attacks against minorities in fourteenth-century France and the Crown of Aragon (Aragon, Catalonia, and Valencia). He argues that these attacks--ranging from massacres to verbal assaults against Jews, Muslims, lepers, and prostitutes--were often perpetrated not by irrational masses laboring under inherited ideologies and prejudices, but by groups that manipulated and reshaped the available discourses on minorities. Nirenberg shows that their use of violence expressed complex beliefs about topics as diverse as divine history, kinship, sex, money, and disease, and that their actions were frequently contested by competing groups within their own society. Nirenberg's readings of archival and literary sources demonstrates how violence set the terms and limits of coexistence for medieval minorities. The particular and contingent nature of this coexistence is underscored by the book's juxtapositions--some systematic (for example, that of the Crown of Aragon with France, Jew with Muslim, medieval with modern), and some suggestive (such as African ritual rebellion with Catalan riots). Throughout, the book questions the applicability of dichotomies like tolerance versus intolerance to the Middle Ages, and suggests the limitations of those analyses that look for the origins of modern European persecutory violence in the medieval past.‎

‎Il s'agit de la première comédie latine jouée en Allemagne et la première pièce de théâtre accompagnée de musique (Fètis ,2dn éd.,T7, p232), inspiré de La farce de Maistre Pathelin , que l'auteur avait certainement vu à Paris lors de son voyage en 1473 , et jouée pour la première fois en 1497 à Heidelberg ,la première édition date de 1498 . Né à Bale le 29 décembre 1455 ,Johannes Reuchlinn, étudie la musique , les sciences , les langues , maîtrise le latin, le grec et l'hébreu ,surtout connu pour ses ouvrages sur la Kabbale et sur la défense des livres en hébreux face à l'inquisition de Cologne, Erasme le considérait comme l'humaniste par excellence, il est le grand-oncle de Melantchon. Dans une belle impression de Thomas Anshelm également dit Thomas Anshelm de Baden-Baden, (1465-1522) engraver , imprimeur et humaniste allemand , il a imprimé de nombreux ouvrages pour Reuchlin et créé de magnifiques caractères grecs et hébraïques . Anshelm a utilisé au moins quatre marques typographiques, dont l'une avec des angeles est l'oeuvre de Hans Baldung, dit Grien, graveur, peinture en allemand qui perfectionne son art dans les ateliers d'Albrecht Dürer est présenté ici.
