‎W. G. Sebald Michael Hulse translation‎

‎The Emigrants‎

‎London United Kingdom: Vintage Publishing 2011. Paperback. New/-. -. At first The Emigrants appears simply to document the lives of four Jewish emigres in the twentieth century. But gradually as Sebald's precise almost dreamlike prose begins to draw their stories the four narrations merge into one overwhelming evocation of exile and loss. Written with a bone-dry sense of humour and a fascination with the oddness of existence The Emigrants is highly original in its heady mix of fact memory and fiction and photographs. 256 pages 130 x 196 x 22mm 240g. These works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and are translated here into English by Margaret Armour. Initially establishing his reputation as a romantic composer Richard Wagner revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk total work of art by which he sought to synthesize the poetic visual musical and dramatic arts. This edition of 'Siegfried & The Twilight of the Gods' is heightened by the dazzling color illustrations of a master of the craft Arthur Rackham. One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration 1850 until the start of the First World War Rackhams artistry is unparalleled. Throughout his career he developed a unique style combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. ‎Wagner Richard; Rolleston T. W. Translation‎

‎Tannhauser: A Dramatic Poem By Richard Wagner and Illustrated by Willy Pogany‎

‎New York: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1911. First George Harrap edition; circa 1911. Oversize 8" x 11" folio design. Fine brown suede leather over thick semi-soft cover w/elaborately tooled ornamentation and design some shelf wear discoloration; wear to leather edge extending over stiffer cover. Cover impressed w/gilt titles and Pogany design within gilt border. Spine richly displays complete titles in gilt w/stylized symbols at top bottom. Thick deckled pages near fine; no writing or marks. Freely Translated in Poetic Narrative Form by T. W. Rolleston. Elaborate profuse symbolical and complexly illustrated edition by Willy Pogany. Contains sixteen tipped-in colour lithograph plates and ten mounted charcoal plates. Also nearly seventy glorious monochromatic designs throughout w/flourishing borders accents colors; some chiaroscuro among other varied methods. Although other artists have illustrated various editions Willy Pogany captures the surreal and tragic enchantment of this tale. Fairly worn cover w/near fine interior of this rarity. Willy Pogany 1882-1955 was a prolific Hungarian book illustrator best known for his pen and ink drawings of myths and fables such as the German legend of Tannhauser. A large portion of Pogany's work can be termed Art Nouveau. Pogany's artistic style is heavily fairy-tale orientated and often features motifs of mythical animals such as nymphs and pixies. His dreamy colour illustrations are exemplified by the tipped-in plates in this volume but his pen and ink drawings also portray the extent of his talent. Wagner's Tannhauser is a cautionary tale originally in operatic form. Here the poetical text is majestically illustrated with the ethereal imagery of Willy Pogany. The tragedy follows Tannhauser and his lust for his lover Venus. After endless pleasure is gained and soon becomes wearisome Tannhauser departs. Having forsaken God through his indulgences he seeks forgiveness which is granted. Meanwhile Venus within the throes of a shattered heart commits the ultimate act of desolation. Wilhelm Richard Wagner was a German composer conductor theatre director and essayist primarily known for his operas. Unlike most great opera composers Wagner wrote both the scenario and libretto for his works. A rare and beautifully crafted book. Apprx. 150 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Illus. by Pogany Willy. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Book. George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. Hardcover‎

4to - over 9" - 12" tall. Apprx. 125 pages. Insured post. ‎Wagner Richard; Rolleston T. W. Translation‎

‎The Tale of Lohengrin: Knight of the Swan After the Drama by Richard Wagner and Presented by Willy Pogany‎

‎London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. 1913. First edition thus; from colophon at back: "The entire book including auto-lithographs is printed by off-set lithography by Vincent Brooks Day and Sons Ltd. London the four-colour reproductions are the work of The Dux Engraving Co. Ltd. Glasgow." No date; circa 1913. Oversize 8" x 11" folio design. Fine brown morocco pebbled leather boards w/elaborately tooled blind-stamped ornamentation and design crisp gilt spine titles length of spine light shelf wear; protected in clear sleeve. Spine richly displays complete titles in gilt w/stylized heart design at top and swan at bottom. Thick deckled pages near fine. Bright gilded top edge. Detailed slate green and brown imagery at front back endpapers. Bind fine intact. Elaborate profuse symbolical and complexly illustrated edition by Willy Pogany. Eight deliciously richly subdued four-color plates in blending watercolor-like presentation. Enchanting monochromatic two and three-color designs throughout w/flourishing borders accents colors; also chiaroscuro-like black imagery among other varied methods. Although other artists have illustrated various editions Willy Pogany captures the surreal nature of this tale. An attractive near fine example of this rarity. The son of Parzival Percival Lohengrin is a knight of the Holy Grail sent in a boat pulled by swans to rescue a maiden who can never ask his identity. His story which first appears in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival is a version of the Knight of the Swan legend passed on in a variety of medieval tales. Wolfram's story was expanded in two later romances. Presented here is Richard Wagner's opera of Lohengrin based upon these legends. William Andrew "Willy" Pogany born Vilmos Andreas Pogany was a prolific Hungarian illustrator. Pogany's best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. The publication of Pogany's Lohengrin was the final act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner's Germanic tales and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogany clearly approached the commission to illustrate Lohengrin as an opportunity to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding works: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner Tannhäuser and Parsifal; four books that immortalized him as an illustrator. His commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations including color lithographs monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates produced with a four-color process included in here. Themes of medieval chivalry erotic love and moral tests are illustrated in a lavish fashion by Pogány with an outstanding use of iconography form and color. A rare and beautiful book. Insured post. First Edition. Full-Leather. Fine. Illus. by Pogany Willy. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book. George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd. hardcover‎
