In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 2 volumes set: (303, [7] p; 238, [6] p). Hegira: 1305 = Gregorian: 1888. First and only edition of this extremely rare first separate Roman history (as well as the Byzantine history) in the Ottoman/Turkish literature. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha had already dealt briefly in Roman and Byzantine history as part of an outline of ancient and medieval European history (Avrupa'nin Ahval-i Sabika ve Lahikasi): Tarih-i Cevdet (first edition) vol. 6 (Istanbul 1294 AH /1877). The Roman history until Constantine the Great is limited to the first ten pages of this account, the remainder deals with Byzantine history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, bureaucrat, administrator, historian, and a prominent figure during the Tanzimat reforms of the Ottoman Empire. He was the head of the Mecelle commission that codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the Westernization of law. He is often regarded as a pioneer in the codification of civil law based on the European legal system. The Mecelle remained intact in several modern Arab states in the early and mid-20th century. In addition to Turkish, he was proficient in Arabic, Persian, French, and Bulgarian languages. He wrote numerous books on history, law, grammar, linguistics, logic, and astronomy. ‎Edition originale de la version donnée par Jean Nicot. Etat satisfisant (forte mouill. intérieure, rel. lég. frottée, bon éat par ailleurs). "C'est sur [ le] manuscrit que fut faite la première édition de l'Histoire d'Aimoin, à Paris en 1514, chez Badius, fol. Les fautes dont cette édition étoit remplie, jusqu'au nom d'Aimoin qui y est appellé Annonius, engagèrent Jean Nicot à en donner une plus correcte. Quoique le Privilège soit de l'an 1557, elle ne parut qu'en 1567, à Paris, chez André Wechel, in8° Wechel la dédia à Nicot lui-même, dont le nim ne paroit qu'à la tête de cette Epître" (Ceillier, Histoire Générale des Auteurs Sacrés, XX, 63). Disciple d'Abbon de Fleury, le bénédictin Aimoin est entré chez les bénédictins de l'abbaye de Fleury vers 980. Ses "Historiae Francorum Lib. V" constituent l'une des plus anciennes compilation importantes des sources de l'histoire de France, composées avant 1004. L'oeuvre évoque l'histoire des francs depuis les origines jusqu'en 654.‎

First edition. This informative book presents for the first time a complete English translation of Gaspar Castano de Sosa's journal of his expedition from northern Mexico into New Mexico in 1950-91. The annotated commentary details the route of travel identifies the Indians and Pueblos visited and provides pertinent information on many points of historical archaeological interest. Donald E. Worcester 1915-2003 was an American historian who specialized in Southwestern United States and Latin American history. He was president of the Western History Association from 1974-1975. Worcester graduated from Bard College in 1939. He received an M.A. from the University of California Berkeley in 1941. He then served in the US Naval Reserve in World War II. He received a PhD. from Berkeley in 1947. From 1947 until 1963 he was a professor at the University of Florida. He then was a professor at Texas Christian University and history department chair. From 1960 until 1965 he was managing editor of the Hispanic American Historical Review. Worcester's view that history is made of complexities not dualities is seen as foundational for much of the understanding by later scholars of Southwest United States history.
