Lucan. (Marcus Annaeus Lucanus) [39?65 A.D.]
LA PHARSALE DE LUCAIN, ou Les Guerres Civiles de Cesar et Pompee.
417p.+ Engraved title. No blanks. Small 24mo. [125 x 72 mm.] Old worming in last two gatherings, with slight loss. Plain vellum. Lucan was born in Córdoba, Spain, nephew of the Roman philosopher Senec a. At first in Nero's favor, he was later forced to kill himself when his part in a plot against the emperor was discovered. Ten books of his epic Bellum Civile (on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey), erroneously called Pharsalia, survive. Though the poem is written in a severe style and is often digressive and extravagant, it has a kind of vigorous beauty and grandeur which gave Lucan a hig h place in the esteem of later writers. This translation into French by Mr. De Breboeuf was first published in 1655, by Sommaville, Paris. First Elzevier edition. The Dutch family of Elzevier (Elzevir; Elsevier) were the foremost printers of their time. They produced a vast variety of well printed scholarly and popular books; many in a very small handy format. Louis Elzevier, the founder of the firm, produced his first book in Leiden in 1583. The 'golden age' of Elzevier printing was between 1620 and 1680. The Elzevier dynasty probably produced their last publication in 1770. Willems 827; Brunet III:1202. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! SMALL BOX 2/SHU9

LUCAN: CIVIL WAR Translated with Introduction and Notes
Foxing to endpapers. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover (G. P. Goold). DJ has minor shelfwear with some foxing to DJ flaps. DJ spine sunned. ; Lucan's epic poem on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey stands beside the poems of Virgil and Ovid in the first rank of Latin epic; powerful in its condemnation of the civil war. This new translation uses English and free verse with the same number of lines as the Latin for easy cross-reference. The notes and glossary explain all the names, places, customs, and allusions to mythology, history, literature, and astronomy in the poem. The substantial introduction sets the scene for the reader unfamiliar with Lucan, covering the poet and his time; the events of the civil war as a theme of poetry; and the characteristics of Lucan's poem--in particular his relationship with earlier writers of Latin epic and his interest in the sensational. ; 392 pages

Danza Dialogo di Luiano con Annotazioni con annotazioni.
Lucian cianucian Greek Lucianos Latin Lucianus born AD 120 Samosata Commagene Syria now Samsat Tur.—died after 180 Athens Greece

Danza Dialogo di Luiano con Annotazioni con annotazioni.

In Firenze : nella stamperia di Gaspero Pecchioni 1779. Original edition. 8vo. Old wrappers iv 44 p. Some stains to titlepage. Very good copy. In this dialogue the Cynic Crato who has no in pantomimic dancing or those who go to see it is converted to its appreciation by his friend Lycinus.
This is a translation into Italian with notes of Lucian's famous dialogue on pantomime or "tragic dancing" in ancient Greece. In "tragic" dancing a dramatic plot is enacted by a masked and costumed dancer supported by an actor. The dancer's lines are spoken for him by someone else. There is also a chorus and for accompaniment the flute and the syrinx with various instruments of percussion. The work is dedicated to Antonio Muzarelli who was ballet master at the Burgtheater in Vienna at a time when ballet was detested by Emperor Joseph II although the art form was gaining some popularity due to the reforms of Jean-Georges Noverre 29 April 1727 – 19 October 1810 the a French dancer and balletmaster generally considered the creator of ballet d'action. The dialogue was probably written in Antioch in 162–165 a.d. when the Emperor Verus was there in compliment to him because of his interest in pantomime at a time when visual art was held inferior to literary art. This work underscores the legitimacy of dance because Lucian recognizes the intellectual character of dance. He emphasizes that a dancer must be able to express his or her ideas and sentiments through the intelligibility of movement and posture. Lucian's dialogue on dancing remains popular today due to its clever dialogue and clarity of argument. Rare: two OCLC locations one in North America: NYP Pecchioni books
