MYTHICAL AND LEGENDARY NARRATIVE IN OVID'S FASTI
Gift inscription to R. E. Fantham from author on ffep (includes tipped-in note from author). Dust-soiling to one small area of textblock. ; This book analyses the mythical and legendary narratives in Ovid's Fasti as narrative and concentrates on the neglected literary aspects of these stories. It combines traditional tools of literary criticism with more modern techniques (taken especially from narratology and intertextuality). From a narratological viewpoint it covers important features such as aperture, closure, characterization, internal narrators, description, space, time and cinematic technique. On the intertextual level it examines the narratives' complex relationship with Virgil, Livy and Ovid's own earlier works. Recent criticism on the Fasti has addressed various elements (religious, historical, political, astronomical etc. ) , but detailed narrative study has been wanting. This book fills that gap, to provide a more informed and balanced appreciation of this multifaceted poem aimed at classicists and literary critics in general (for whom all the Latin is translated). ; Mnemosyne: Bibliotheca Classica Batava Supplementum; 306 pages; Signed by Author

Cultivating Crisis: The Human Cost of Pesticides in Latin America

Since World War II the Green Revolution has boosted agricultural production in Latin America and other parts of the Third World with money technical assistance and other forms of aid from United States development agencies. But the Green Revolution came at a high price—massive pesticide dependence that has caused serious socioeconomic and public health problems and widespread environmental damage.

In this study Douglas Murray draws on ten years of field research to tell the stories of international development strategies pesticide problems and agrarian change in Latin America. Interwoven with his considerations of economic and geopolitical dimensions are the human consequences for individual farmers and rural communities.

- See more at: http://utpress.utexas.edu/index.php/books/murcul#sthash.eXK2Ondw.dpuf
University of Texas Press hardcover
