DEATH AND THE OPTIMISTIC PROPHECY IN VERGIL'S AENEID
Minor Soiling to foreedges of about 5 pages. Dampstaining to lower corners of boards. Gift inscription [from author? ] to R. E. Fantham: "For Elaine, with thanks and hospitality Jim" in pencil to ffep. Else book is VG. DJ spine sunned. Minor shelfwear to DJ. ; Here James O'Hara shows how the deceptive nature of prophecy in the Aeneid complicates assessment of the poem's attitude toward its hero's achievement and toward the future of Rome under Augustus Caesar. This close study of the language and rhetorical context of the prophecies reveals that they regularly suppress discouraging material: the gods send promising messages to Aeneas and others to spur them on in their struggles, but these struggles often lead to untimely deaths or other disasters only darkly hinted at by the prophecies. O'Hara finds in these prophecies a persistent subtext that both stresses the human cost of Aeneas' mission and casts doubt on Jupiter's promise to Venus of an "endless empire" for the Romans. O'Hara considers the major prophecies that look confidently toward Augustus' Rome from the standpoint of Vergil's readers, who, like the characters within the poem, must struggle with the possibility that the optimism of the prophecies of Rome is undercut by darker material partially suppressed. The study shows that Vergil links the deception of his characters to the deceptiveness of Roman oratory, politics, and religion, and to the artifice of poetry itself. In response to recent debates about whether the Aeneid is optimistic or pessimistic, O'Hara argues that Vergil expresses both the Romans' hope for the peace of a Golden Age under Augustus and their fear that this hope might be illusory. ; 224 pages

Pueblo Warriors and Spanish Conquest
xxi225 pages with illustrations 4 maps bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 1/2" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering on red background. An association copy from the library of Donald Worcester with his signature on the front end paper First edition. Adopting the principle of divide and conquer the Spaniards in North America employed Indian auxiliaries in promoting the geographical expansion of their North American holding. Although most of the Pueblo tribes had united temporarily to expel the Spaniards from New Mexico in 1680 their subsequent revision to disunity facilitated Spanish reconquest of the province in the last decade of the seventeenth century. Not only was there an apparent lack of unity among the sedentary Pueblos themselves but there was a more significant and traditional rift between the Pueblos and the indios barbaros the "barbaric Indians". Spanish authorities took advantage of these differences in the century that followed reconquest and their extensive use of Pueblo Indian auxiliaries in the defense of New Mexico during the eighteenth century attracted various hostile tribes to support of Spain. By the end of the century Utes Jicarilla Apaches Navaho and Comanches were recruited. In this book the procedures organization contributions and significance of the Pueblo auxiliaries from 1692 to 1794 are examined in detailed in the vital central sector of New Spain's northern frontier. It not only reveals an important facet of history of New Mexico but also furnishes an understanding of Spanish procedures in the defense of the entire northern frontier against hostile Indians French incursion and later British and Northern American encroachment. Donald E. Worcester 1915-2003 was an American historian who specialized in Southwestern United States and Latin American history. He was president of the Western History Association from 1974-1975. Worcester graduated from Bard College in 1939. He received an M.A. from the University of California Berkeley in 1941. He then served in the US Naval Reserve in World War II. He received a PhD. from Berkeley in 1947. From 1947 until 1963 he was a professor at the University of Florida. He then was a professor at Texas Christian University and history department chair. From 1960 until 1965 he was managing editor of the Hispanic American Historical Review. Worcester's view that history is made of complexities not dualities is seen as foundational for much of the understanding by later scholars of Southwest United States history. Condition: Lightly soiled. Jacket corners and spine ends chipped closed edge tears with creases and chips. A very good copy in a good to very good jacket. University of Oklahoma Press hardcover

PHILODEMUS AND POETRY Poetic Theory and Practice in Lucretius, Philodemus and Horace
Scholar's name to ffep (Robert Brown). Else book is fine. DJ has minor shelfwear and 1 minor scratch. ; This is an edited collection by a distinguished team of scholars on the philosopher and poet Philodemus of Gadara (ca. 110-40 BC). The discovery of his library at Herculaneum, and the editing and gradual publication of the material, has reawakened interest in the philosophical and historical importance of his work. Philodemus presents us with a poetic theory of interest in itself, and several of his treatises provide us with instances of how poetry was seen as providing moral paradigms and guidance. These essays explore the many facets of Philodemus's work and the relationship between them, offering a critical survey of recent trends and developments in scholarship on Philodemus in particular and Hellenistic literary theory in general. ; 336 pages
