OVIDIO; CARTARI, Vincenzo
In-8 °, 264, (2cc), printer’s mark with the motto "Veritas filia temporis" on the frontispiece, vellum binding, good condition. First edition. His whole life, as far as at least from the scant news we have received, Vincenzo Cartari revolved around the Este family, of whom even his ancestors had been faithful servants. Dedicating in 1551 to Alfonso II, future Duke of Ferrara, his translation of Ovid's Fasti, C. specifies that the services of his family had been particularly appreciated at the time of Duke Ercole I (1471-1505). In the same dedication C. mentions the fact that he remained almost alone in the world and this, apart from the data accompanying the news of the baptism, is all we know about his family life. The date of death is unknown: a post quem term is the dedication of the Venetian edition of 1571 of the Imagini, his most famous work, which is addressed to cardinal Luigi d'Este and bears the date of 10 September 1569.
