He was born in the Netherlands in 1744 to Robert Stedman, a Scot and an officer in Holland's Scots Brigade, and his wife of Dutch noble lineage, Antoinetta Christina van Ceulen. He lived most of his childhood in Holland with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. He recorded his experiences in this Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1796) which, with its firsthand depictions of slavery and other aspects of colonization, became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! The Secret History of Gender: Women Men and Power in Late Colonial Mexico
xiii478 pages with pictorial title page tables maps appendix bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/2" x 6 3/4" bound in original publisher's red cloth with black lettering to spine. First edition.

In this study of Gender relations in late colonial Mexico ca 1760-1821 Steve Stern analyses the historical connections between gender power and politics in the lives of peasants Indians and other marginalized peoples. Through vignettes of everyday life including the routine conflicts and violence that resulted from cultural arguments over gender right he challenges assumptions about gender right he challenges assumptions about gender relations and political culture in a patriarchal society. He also reflects on the continuity and change between late colonial times and the present and suggest a paradigm for understanding similar struggles over gender rights in Old Regime societies in Europe and the Americas. Stern purses three major arguments. First he demonstrates that non-elite women and men developed contending models of legitimate gender authority and that these differences sparked bitter struggles over gender right and obligation. Second he reveals connections in language and social dynamics between disputes over legitimate authority in domestic and familial matters and disputes in the arenas of community and state power. The result is a fresh interpretation of the gendered dynamics of peasant politics community and riot. Third Stern examines regional and ethnocultural variation and finds that his analysis is applicable beyond particular locales and ethnic subgroupings within Mexico. The historical arguments and conceptual sweep of Stern's book will inform not only students of Mexico and Latin America but also students of gender in the West and other world regions. Stern's interpretation both undermines and transcends of a single Latin American gender culture including the notions of male rage and female complicity.

Condition:

A near fine copy in a fine jacket. Stevens Donald Fithian 1953
Origins of Instability in Early Republican Mexico
xiv184 pages with tables figure bibliography and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First edition. In the decades following independence Mexico was transformed from a strong stable colony to a republic suffering from economic decline and political strife. Marked by political instability - characterized by Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's rise to the presidency on eleven distinct occasion - this period of Mexico's history is often neglected and frequently misunderstood. donald Stevens' revisionist account challenges traditional historiography. After examining existing hypotheses and evidence for mexico's instability he dissects the relationship between instability and economic cycles; contradicts the notion that Mexico's social elite could have increased political stability by becoming more active; and argues that the principal political fissures were not liberal vs conservative by radical moderate and conservative. Ultimately Stevens maintains the origins of instability are to be found in the contradictions between liberalism and Mexico's traditional class structure and the problems of creating an independent republic from colonial and monarchical traditions. This study makes sense of a chaotic era in Mexico's past and provides a coherent framework from which to view fifty years of history that shaped modern Mexico. Origins of Instability will be of interest to historians of Latin America and those concerned with the transition from authoritarian to democratic government. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket.
