It can be argued that the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585 was one of the most important religious events in the history of Mexico. Summoned by Pedro Moya de Contreras the all-powerful archbishop visitador and later viceroy it was one of many such councils held in Spain and its dominions in the aftermath of the Council of Trent. It not only enacted a comprehensive code of canon law for New Spain but also commissioned important works such as a uniform catechism and ceremonial. One of the most important of these was the directory for confessors a lengthy summary of moral theology canon law and pastoral practice designed to compensate for the poor education of the clergy. Dimensions 328-332 x 230 mm. 188 folios missing at least three leaves written in brown ink in an Italian cursiva libraria script EIGHT ILLUMINATED INITIALS of seven lines one-line paraphs in red or blue<i> </i>simple two- to four-line in red or blue initials. BINDING: re-cased using original binding materials of brown half leather over bevelled wooden boards with three double bands remains of four straps present. TEXT: Italian translation of Gregory the Great's <i>Moralia in Job</i> one of the most important and widely copied texts of the Middle Ages. Though forty copies of this translation survive this volume is unusual in its incorporation of Venetian dialectal forms. All other copies are in European institutions and have not been on the market for the last century. PROVENANCE: scribal colophon on f. 190v provides a date for this manuscript's completion and helps localize its production within Italy: "Scripto per mi zuane de zane zoielier condam per simon et chi li lezeranno priegi dio per lo scriptore. There is no Zuane de Zane on record elsewhere as a scribe; the name itself is Venetian and evidence of the manuscript's watermark and decoration also suggest an origin in the region of Veneto and possibly Venice specifically. The manuscript was later acquired by a private European collection. CONDITION: slight tears in the lower margin of f. 25 and upper margin of ff. 37 and 160 from f. 161 to the end there is a slight loss to the upper outer corner<i> </i>slight water staining visible parchment reinforcement present prickings visible. B01MEFSPGZ 1833 first edition thus Nathan Kite Philadelphia Pennsylvania 3 7/8 x 5 7/8 inches tall full leather bound gilt lettered black leather label to spine 211 pp. Very slight soiling and slight to moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers with a bit of bumping to all four tips. 1847 prior owner name to blank front free-endpaper with soiling and an ink stain to the subsequent blank front free-endpaper. Light to moderate scattered foxing throughout. Otherwise apart from a couple of pages with creased tips a very good copy - clean and unmarked - of this scarce early Philadelphia issue of a beloved Christian devotional work. OCLC No. 11689841 locates only two copies of this imprint at institutions worldwide - one at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and one at the State University of New York at Buffalo. ~KM5~ 1.0P An early American edition of the popular 1785 John Payne translation of the Imitation of Christ Copinger 'On the English Translations of the Imitatio Christi' 1900 pp. 84-87. In the first paragraph of his lengthy preface Payne explains that he hoped in this translation to do 'some justice to the sense of the Original; which is almost lost in the loose paraphrase of Dean Stanhope' referring to Anglican George Stanhope's often reprinted 1698 English translation. However Payne's translation uses the King James Version wording for scriptural quotations within the work rather than the Vulgate edition of the Bible available to a Kempis in the fifteenth century. And Payne has edited out much from the original which he found overly 'monkish' or 'popish' including all of Book 4 dealing with the Roman Catholic Mass. The Imitation was written by Catholic monk Thomas Kempis circa 1380-1471 as four separate books completed between 1420 and 1427 at Mount Saint Agnes monastery in the town of Windesheim located in what is now the Netherlands. .
