Tapestries of Hope, Threads of Love: The Arpillera Movement in Chile, 1974ñ1994
Square small quarto in color illus paper wraps (yellow spine); xii, 142 pages) : illustrations (some color) Inscribed and signed by author on title page. "Arpilleras are burlap-backed tapestries depicting the experiences and emotions of women whose sons and husbands were arrested and never heard from again during the years of military rule. Agosin's narrative traces the arpillera movement from its early days under the promotion and protection of the Catholic Church's VicarÌa de Solidaridad through the early 1990s, when newly reestablished civilian authorities decided not to more forcefully seek justice for victims of human rights abuses. The book includes 45 reproductions (on glossy plates), and the moving testimonies of a number of the arpilleristas themselves"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 57. // Women -- Political activity -- Chile -- Santiago. Agricola Georgius; Hoover Herbert Clark and Hoover Lou Henry Translators from the Latin
De Re Metallica
New York: Dover Publications Inc. 1950. 638 Pages with a General Index and to Persons and Authorities and to the Illustrations. Dark green boards with gold spine lettering. The dust jacket flap price is $17.95. There are five inked-lines of gift inscription on the front endpaper. Remaining pages are as new - bright tight and white. No marks. Only date given is 1950 but with an ISBN it has to be a Dover 1970s reprint. Originally published in 1556 Agricola's De Re Metallica was the first book on mining to be based on field research and observation that today would be called the scientific approach. It was therefore the first book to offer detailed technical drawings to illustrate the various specialized techniques of the many branches of mining and the first to provide a realistic history of mining from antiquity to the mid-sixteenth century. For almost 200 years Agricola remained the only authoritative work in this area and by modern times it had become one of the most highly respected scientific classics of all time. A book more often referred to in literature on mining and metallurgy than any other its Latin text prevented it from being as widely used as it might have been. In 1912 the book was translated by former President Herbert Clark Hoover and his wife. Printed in a limited edition the work was quickly bought up by book collectors historians and medievalists who had found that there was much to be learned from its pages. The book contains an unprecedented wealth of material on alluvial mining alchemy silver refining smelting surveying timbering nitric acid making and hundreds of other phases of the medieval art of metallurgy. The text even covers the legal aspects of mining the use of boundary stones forfeitures of titles safety requirements of tunnel building in the 1500s and so on. But the plates perhaps more than anything else have insured Agricola's continued importance. Brilliantly executed drawings richly detailed reveal a whole medieval world of machinery industrial technique tools even costume and architecture. All 289 of the original woodcuts are reproduced in this reprint of the 1912 edition offering students of the period commercial artists engineers metallurgists and even curious general readers an unforgettable picture of the first age of technology. This 1950 Dover Publication is a complete and unchanged reprint of the translation published by The Mining Magazine London in 1912. It was made available to Dover through the permission of Herbert C. Hoover and Mr. Edgar Rickard Author and Publisher respectively of the original volume. 1950 Reprint Edition of 1950 Dover Editi. Hard Back. Near Fine/As New. 7" X 11". Dover Publications Inc.

AHMED CEVDET PASHA, (Turkish statesman, historian, scholar), (1822-1895).
[FIRST TURKISH BOOK ON HISTORY OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE] Manzara-i Iber yahud Roma tarihi. 2 volumes set. [i.e. A view of the world and the history of Rome].
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original fine black quarter leather bdg. Marbled endpaper. Ottoman lettered gilt on spine. 2 volumes in 1. Demy 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). 2 volumes set: (303, [7] p; 238, [6] p). Hegira: 1305 = Gregorian: 1888. First and only edition of this extremely rare first separate Roman history (as well as the Byzantine history) in the Ottoman/Turkish literature. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha had already dealt briefly in Roman and Byzantine history as part of an outline of ancient and medieval European history (Avrupa'nin Ahval-i Sabika ve Lahikasi): Tarih-i Cevdet (first edition) vol. 6 (Istanbul 1294 AH /1877). The Roman history until Constantine the Great is limited to the first ten pages of this account, the remainder deals with Byzantine history. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ahmed Cevdet Pasha was an Ottoman scholar, intellectual, bureaucrat, administrator, historian, and a prominent figure during the Tanzimat reforms of the Ottoman Empire. He was the head of the Mecelle commission that codified Islamic law for the first time in response to the Westernization of law. He is often regarded as a pioneer in the codification of civil law based on the European legal system. The Mecelle remained intact in several modern Arab states in the early and mid-20th century. In addition to Turkish, he was proficient in Arabic, Persian, French, and Bulgarian languages. He wrote numerous books on history, law, grammar, linguistics, logic, and astronomy.
