‎Summary CC CM, 318-318A present the collected letters of Geert Grote (Gerardus Magnus, 1340-1384), founder of the late medieval Dutch Church reform movement Devotio moderna. The collection consists of 83 letters, most of them written by Grote, but some of them by his correspondents to or about him; three of them have never been edited before. As so often, Grote blurs various genres, and as a consequence some letters travel under the moniker 'letter', although they can better be characterized as small treatises or as pieces of juridical advice (consilia). Grote's correspondence with well over thirty individuals from a variety of secular, monastic, and ecclesiastical backgrounds in the Low Countries and beyond offers a unique insight into the practical, pastoral dimensions of the Devotio moderna movement as well as the theological concerns of Grote and his contemporaries. Each of the edited letters is accompanied by an introduction, some of those written in both Latin and Middle Dutch by an apparatus comparatiuus, indicating in detail all discrepancies between the translation and the source text. Elle a été initiée par l'Académie des Sciences, Lettres et Arts de Clermond-Ferrand qui souhaitait couronner cette grande figure locale auvergnate, entrée dans l'histoire papale sous le nom de Sylvestre II. Humaniste avant la lettre, bon connaisseur de la culture orientale, il contribue à l'introduction des chiffres arabes en Occident et à la redécouverte de la pensée aristotélicienne. L'ouvrage est divisé en deux parties : la première est consacrée à sa vie, la seconde est constituée par l'ensemble de ses textes en latin, collationnés à partir des manuscrits originaux conservés dans différentes villes européennes. ‎Summary When the canons of the Congregation of Windesheim set about codifying their liturgy in the final decades of the 14th century, they had to reckon with the striking variety of customs among the different dioceses, nations, and religious orders of the Roman rite. In their perplexity, they turned to Radulph of Rivo (ca. 1350?1403), dean of Our Lady of Tongres and canon law professor at Cologne. Radulph travelled to Rome to discover the sources of its ancient liturgy. There he was alarmed to discover that even in Rome authentic traditions had been displaced by novelties, and he accused the Franciscans specifically of unlawfully abbreviating or altering the offices. In his reply to the canons of Windesheim, entitled De canonum observantia (ca. 1400), Radulph charts a course of conservative liturgical reform that hews closely to Roman authority. He appeals to canon law, the approved uses of ancient churches and religious rites, the famous commentators, and old liturgical books he found in Rome to establish the authoritative form of Western worship. On the eve of the great changes that swept Europe in the next century, Radulph?s treatise stands out as a careful and competent guide to the Latin liturgical tradition and an invaluable witness to contemporary practice. His conservative intervention looks forward to the work of the Tridentine liturgical commission, whose members had access to Hittorp?s 1568 edition of his treatise. Light bump to top of front board. ; Studies and Texts (Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies) , 24; 125 pages; With the Liber de novitatibus huius temporis (epistola ad Adrianum Papam) , Master Gerhoch (1093–1169) , provost of Reichersberg in Bavaria, attempted in 1155–1156 to inform Pope Hadrian IV (1154–1159) of the doctrinal novelties of his time – the notorious abuses of both secular and ecclesiastical authorities, and the scandalous laxity among clergy and religious – and to point out the remedies legislated by councils convoked by Innocent II(1130–1143) and Eugene III (1145–1153). The principal doctrinal innovators denounced by Gerhoch were Peter Abelard (d. 1141) and Gilbert, bishop of Poitiers (d. 1154). As early as 1126 Gerhoch debated with disciples of Abelard at the Roman curia; and, beginning in the fifties, Master Peter of Vienna, a disciple of Bishop Gilbert, antagonized Gerhoch a great deal. Gerhoch also tells Hadrian that clerical authorities not only keep armies but also abuse them by waging disorderly wars. Secular powers, on the other hand, recklessly usurp the goods of the Church for their own ends and fail to pay tithes imposed by Gregory I. In both France and Germany, the pope is told, the low moral conduct of the clergy calls for more stringent reform. Gerhoch advises the pope also to restrain loud-mouthed jurists in both secular and ecclesiastical courts since they often make their cases so convoluted that it becomes impossible to solve them. This edition of the Latin text is supplemented with a detailed introduction to the issues discussed, an extensive bibliography concerning Gerhoch, as well as indexes and a glossary‎
