‎Neufchâtel, Toussaint du Pré, 1577 In-12 (164 x 97 mm), 57 pp. mal chiffrées 58. Veau havane, dos à nerfs orné, pièce de titre en maroquin brun, tranches rouges, un coin usé, fente de quelques millimètres à un mors, petite tache d'encre dans la marge supérieure de la page de titre, quelques rousseurs (reliure du XVIIe siècle).‎

‎La sanglante reprise d’Ambert et d’Issoire au capitaine Merle. Ce très rare ouvrage en latin relate les événements survenus en Auvergne et qui ont marqué le siège des villes d’Ambert et d’Issoire occupées alors par le terrible capitaine Merle. Elle fut imprimée la même année. En 1575, le capitaine Merle, chef des Huguenots, prend par la force les villes d'Issoire et d'Ambert et y commet toutes sortes d'excès : extorsions, torture de catholiques… En juin 1577, le duc d'Anjou frère du roi Henri III, reprend les villes. Issoire, devenue repaire de protestants, sera rasée et anéantie. On trouve dans cette relation de curieux détails sur les causes de cet épisode des guerres de religion, les noms des officiers et autres personnages qui furent tués ou assistèrent au siège des deux villes. Le capitaine Mathieu Merle (1548-1590), issu d'une famille d'Uzès, noble désargentée, embrassa de bonne heure la carrière militaire. Il se signala par une bravoure extraordinaire. Après la Saint Barthélemy, il mena une lutte sans merci contre les catholiques et fit régner la terreur par la destruction et le pillage de nombreuses villes du Puy-de-Dôme. Il fut nommé en 1580 par le roi de Navarre, futur Henri IV, gentilhomme de la chambre et gouverneur de Mende. Il se retira en 1582 et prit le titre de baron de Salavas et de La Gorce. Le duc de Montpensier disait de lui : "Il est un peu délabré d'hommes, mais avec lui j'attaquerais l'enfer, fut-il plein de cinquante mille diables." This short text presents a group of young Christians facing trial in Carthage before a Roman judge on July 17th, 180 A.D. This is the first full commentary on this important text in English. It studies the fiery altercation between the defendants and the Roman proconsul, highlighting the rhetorical and narrative aspects of the original Latin (and the Greek translation from late antiquity). Throughout the book, much attention is paid to the communication, or miscommunication, between antagonists. For this dramatic and narrative approach to the text, the Acta Martyrum Scillitanorum may be taken as it is: a coherent body of text, describing an altercation that either took place exactly like that, or was deemed by the author to be probable and natural, that is, a plausible and convincing dialogue between contrasting characters in a Roman judicial context.‎

[4]-246-32 ; [4]-276 pages (complet). Légers frottements à la reliure, quelques feuillets brunis. Bon état. Nouvelle édition latine illustrée d’une carte et de 66 gravures hors-texte dont la plupart ont été gravées par Fittler et Bartolozzi. Virgile est né en Lombardie, dans le nord de l’Italie. Il meurt en l’an 19 avant notre ère, à l’âge de 51 ans. Il est le grand poète de la Rome païenne, qui célébrait dans ses Géorgiques et juste avant la célébration de l’Homme-Dieu, les pâtures et les bergers. Son but ultime était la littérature, ou plus précisément la poésie. Durant ses études de rhétorique, il éprouve une certaine répulsion pour la vie à Rome et se fait couper les vivres par ses parents, qui étaient paysans. Il écrit alors les Bucoliques en 39 av. J.-C. et s’affirme sur la scène littéraire en tant que poète. Puis il écrira les Géorgiques, à Naples, un poème qu’il fera lire à Octave, le futur Auguste, qui lui commandera l’Énéide. Bel exemplaire.‎
