Communist tract issued shortly after the Russian revolution calling for an immediate proletarian revolution in Italy with socialization of industry and agriculture; closure of borders to prevent the flight of the bourgeoisie; and the "management of the new society through a free arrangement of persons and competent groups" ".persone e di gruppi competenti interessati all soluzione di ogni singolo problema tecnico e sociale". The pseudonym "Emme" is unknown to us; nor is it certain from which "Libreria Rossa" this pamphlet originated - "libreria rossa" "red bookshop" being a common enough appelation among Italian-American radical booksellers of all political stripes during this period. Minor toning; light creases at margins; Near Fine - Grade A/A-. A bit of a puzzle: the poster appears to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the Associazione Bandiera Rossa an Italian Trotskyist group; but the poster bears the imprint of the PCI the main-line Marxist-Leninist party in Italy -- an ideological implausibility even within the chaotic confines of Italian Marxism. Adding further to the confusion is a quotation from Antonio Gramsci founder of the PCI in upper right. In any case a terrific graphic attributed here to Luciano Prati whose name we encounter on a few late-70s Italian film posters but nowhere else. Contemporary vellum over boards; inked spine title; 48 406 26pp. Chafing and perforation to vellum along front joint but holding strong; pencilled note to rear endpapers; text fresh tight and clean; Very Good. A manual of letter-writing illustrated throughout with examples chosen from the author's apparently very large oeuvre. The examples are on a variety of subjects mainly chosen to illustrate the changes in tone and style of address to be used in addressing correspondents of varying stations. Fontana was of a prominent family of Parma and apparently wrote most of these letters while a resident in the estate of his patron Count Alessandro Sanvitale. Rare; OCLC gives four locations of which only one in the U.S. Stanford. From the library of artists Ben and Bernarda Bryson Shahn with estate bookplate inside front cover. Stiff decorative card wrappers; silver foil dustjacket; 8pp. Presentation copy with mounted photographic portrait of Balabanoff 5" x 3" inside front wrapper inscribed in ink: "For my dear friends F&T Lewis with many many heartiest wishes!" dated 1939. Jacket worn and partially detached; text block loose in wrappers; complete just Good. The text consists of Balabanoff's anti-Fascist poem "Human Tears" printed in English French Russian cyrillic Italian and German versions. A much-expanded collection of Balabanoff's poems with the same title was published in New York in 1943; the current volume privately printed and extremely fragile is seldom encountered. <br/><br/>Angelica Balabanoff 1878-1965 an Italian Jew was among the founders of the Italian Communist Party in 1900; she joined the Russian Bolsheviks in 1917 and served as secretary of the Comintern from 1919-20 during which time she became closely affiliated with Lenin Trotsky Zinoviev and many others. She broke with the Bolsheviks and left Russia in 1922 after which she once again became active in the Italian Socialist party. During Mussolini's regime she went into exile first in Switzerland then Paris and finally New York City during which time she published a number of multilingual editions of her poetry. Two splendid panoramic views of Lake Como and Lake Maggiore.<br/> <br/>Catering to the foreigners flocking to the region on The Grand Tour this pair of hand-painted prints beautifully depict the famed picturesque lakes with rich bands of blue highlighting the water and sky with the surrounding hills and mountains dotted with luxurious villas. In the view of Lake Maggiore we see from a very high vantage point the Borromean Islands: Isola Bella Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatoriwith their extraordinary gardens. The view of Lake Como looks north up the lake towards Switzerland from above Bellagio which occupies the point at which the lake divides in two. The paintings are clearly intended as a pair the images being almost identical in size with matching black painted margins. Trade PB color photographs architectural drawings etc. A sort-of memoir by the famed architect as he chronicles his projects from the mid-1960s through 1996: "I have tried to relate these adventures here so that this book may introduce many young people to the extraordinary ritual that is the making of architecture." He does manage to squeeze out a two-page biography of himself near the end of the book though. Includes a register of his works a list of his collaborators and an extensive bibliography. . The photograph shows the entire expanse of the city from the western end to the public gardens on the eastern extreme of the island and depicts a bustling port city with numerous ships running in the Venetian Lagoon. Stapled wraps. a little discoloration to wraps final page of text heavily tanned from contact with rear cover small corner bends at bottom corners of pages in second half of the publication bottom 2" of spine split up to the lower staple but both staples are holding firm. frontispiece portrait This brief autobiographical essay one of dozens of writings generated by Vanzetti during his many years in prison prior to his execution in 1927 is considered to be "one of the most moving and humane writings of anarchism" ever published. 24 pages in length plus covers this version of the booklet was issued in August 1924 about ten months after several motions for a new trial for Sacco and Vanzetti had "been filed and were argued" in October 1923 but had not yet been ruled on. Their original conviction for their alleged involvement in the 1920 murders of two men during an armed robbery at a shoe manufacturing firm in Braintree Massachusetts had taken place in July 1921. Although the precise bibliographic particulars of this printing can't be pinned down through online research I've dubbed it a "second edition" based on the following facts: 1 As originally issued circa September 1923 this publication was only 20 pages in length and contained Alice Stone Blackwell's preface but not the Upton Sinclair "Appreciation" included here; the latter was first published in the Boston Sunday Advertiser of September 16 1923 in which Sinclair refers to having a copy "fresh from the press"; 2 The printing date of this copy is established by the precise dating of the prefatory note August 15th 1924 as well as by its reference to the new-trial motions that had been filed in October 1923 having not been ruled on "up to the date of this printing" that would happen two months later in October 1924; 3 There are no recorded library holdings of this item that bear a 1923 date and also include the Sinclair piece from which I deduce that the Sinclair piece was not incorporated under the heading "An Appreciation" until sometime in 1924 which also accounts for its expansion from 20 to 24 pages. Although I can't be sure whether or not there may have been other printings of this 24-page version earlier in 1924 it seems clear to me that the addition of the Sinclair piece and the resulting change in pagination fulfill the criteria for a "second edition" even if nobody else has ever called it that. It might also be worth noting that this same version 24 pages with Sinclair was also issued in 1924 under the imprint of the "Sacco-Vanzetti New Trial League" which was an offshoot of the original S-V Defense Committee formed by dissident members in April 1924; without research into primary sources it's probably impossible to establish the precedence of one imprint over the other. The impressively-detailed online finding aid for the Aldino Felicani Sacco-Vanzetti Collection the largest archival collection of materials related to the case held at the Boston Public Library was helpful in establishing some of the above dates and events but unfortunately isn't quite specific enough to nail down the bibliographic points. Finally: given that the Sacco-Vanzetti case is one of the most thoroughly-analyzed and hotly debated events in American history I realize it's entirely possible that these points HAVE been settled by some intrepid scholar-bibliographer of whose work I'm unaware -- so if there's any obsessive S-V know-it-all out there who'd like to contact correct and/or chastise me for any of the above email away! .
