Sternheim Carl; English version by Ashley Dukes
The Mask of Virtue: A Comedy in Three Acts; adapted from "Die Marquise von Arcis"
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd. Near Fine in Very Good dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . minimal wear to book; jacket a bit soiled but otherwise unworn. Translation and adaptation of a German play a drawing-room comedy about some French aristocrats. Presented in London at the Ambassadors Theatre in 1935 it was notable as the first big success of Vivien Leigh who appeared in the role of Henriette Duquesnoy garnering excellent notices and much subsequent press attention. The latter was doubtlessly tied in with the promotional efforts of film producer Alexander Korda who signed her to a contract after seeing her performance on opening night having failed to discern her potential at an earlier meeting. Reportedly and even more fatefully it was in this play that she was first seen by Laurence Olivier later to become her lover and then husband. . Victor Gollancz Ltd hardcover books

STEVENS (William Bagshaw)
Poems by the Rev. William Bagshaw Steven, A.M.
First edition, 4to, [2], 39, [1]pp., no half-title, engraved vignette on title of "May presenting the beauties of Spring, to the contemplation of Retirement in the vicinity of Anchor Church in Derbyshire.", blank fore-edge of title slightly chipped. Born in Abingdon, Berkshire, England in 1756, William Bagshaw Stevens was the son of an apothecary and surgeon. Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford, Stevens was appointed assistant master at Repton School and when Dr. Prior, the headmaster, died in 1779, Stevens was chosen to succeed him. Apparently Stevens was never reconciled to the life of teaching, which he disliked, much preferring to spend his time writing poetry. He had published a book of poetry at the early age of nineteen entitled INDIAN ODES. This book had received good reviews and he was welcomed into the Lichfield literary circle presided over by Anna Seward. His later poetry was not well received by his contemporaries. His journal was published in 1965 by the Clarendon Press and was also edited by Georgina Galbraith. The book here offered is the first and only collected edition of his works and was published to supplement his Journal. Some of the poems in the section entitled "Light Verse" were addressed to Fanny Coutts or are inspired by his love for her. (Taken from the 1971 reprint of this work].

THE TOWNELEY PLAYS [TWO VOLUMES] Volume I: Introduction and Text & Volume II: Notes and Glossary
Vol 1: ISBN: 019722413X, 1994, xlviii & 435 pp & Vol 2: ISBN: 0197224148, 1994, 436-733 pp. ; Early English Text Society S. S. 13 & S. S. 14; 733 pages; This new edition of The Towneley Plays (c. 1500) replaces the edition by George England and Alfred W. Pollard published nearly one hundred years ago by the Early English Text Society. Apart from the corrections of errors in the transcription of the text, the new edition offers a comprehensive introduction, body of notes, and glossary. It also presents the text in a new format, based on an examination of the manuscript, by expanding stanzas attributed to the so-called "Wakefield Master" from nine lines (with some internal rhyme) to thirteen lines.

Stevenson, Robert Louis; edited by the Senior English Class of the South High School
The Pedagogue Voume Two Number One: An Anthology of Stevensoniana
Belvidere IL: Senior English Class of the South High School 1910. Collection of quotes from Stevenson's works with their student choosers noted done as a project for this school in north-central Illinois presumably executed with the help of the school's vocational printing department bound a bit amatuerishly in limp suede in the then-popular style of the Roycrofters complete with hand-colored ornaments on most pages. Softcover full limp leather with blindstamped panels gilt titling. Shows some wear stain chip/tear to base of spine; internally the mull of the inner spine is exposed and partly torn - it seems to have been designed this way in an incomplete understading of the binding arts; there is a split to the fold of the outer folio. Tipped in on two pages are newspaper clippings related to participants causing tanning to adjacent pages; one noting the christening of the Belvidere a U-boat defying steel cargo carrier launched in 1918 and the other the obituary of Miss Marguerite Moore who died in 1917 at the age of 24. Text clean; 30 pages printed on one side only most with a hand-colored ornament. Scarce: no copies of any number are found in Worldcat. First Edition. Limp Leather. Good. 5½" by 8¼". Senior English Class of the South High School
