Figlia del paesaggista William Byrne (1743-1805); sorella di Letitia Byrne (1779-1849) e John Byrne (1786-1847). Quest'opera fa parte della "Stafford Gallery" che aveva come titolo completo: "Engravings of the Most Noble the Marquis of Stafford's Collection of Pictures in London: Arranged According to Schools and in Chronological Order with Remarks on Each Picture". Questa collezione fu costituita dal III conte di Bridgewater, aumentata da George Granville Leveson-Gower, I duca di Sutherland e ospitata a Cleveland House a Londra. Fu aperta al pubblico nel 1806. La pubblicazione fu curata da W Y Ottley e P W Tomkins, edita in quattro volumi, 1810-1818, da Tomkins, Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme, J White & Co. e Cadell & Davies, con illustrazioni incise da Tomkins, Fittler, Romney, Heath e altri, su disegni di W M Craig. Daughter of landscape-engraver William Byrne (1743-1805); sister of Letitia Byrne (1779-1849) and John Byrne (1786-1847). This work is a part of the "Stafford Gallery" had as its full title: 'Engravings of the Most Noble the Marquis of Stafford's Collection of Pictures in London: Arranged According to Schools and in Chronological Order with Remarks on Each Picture'. This collection was formed by the 3rd Earl of Bridgewater, augmented by George Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland and housed at Cleveland House in London. It was opened to the public in 1806. The publication was undertaken by W Y Ottley and P W Tomkins, issued in four volumes, 1810-1818, by Tomkins; Longman, Hurst, Rees & Orme; J White & Co. and Cadell & Davies, with illustrations engraved by Tomkins, Fittler, Romney, Heath and others, from drawings by W M Craig. Ink marks near pictures indicating vehicles in the Scania museum which are not theirs. Scania AB formerly AB Scania-Vabis is a major Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles - specifically heavy trucks and buses. It also manufactures diesel engines for heavy vehicles as well as marine and general industrial applications. Scania AB was formed in 1911 through the merger of Södertälje-based Vabis and Malmö-based Maskinfabriks- aktiebolaget Scania. The company's head office has been in Södertälje since 1912. In addition there are assembly plants in ten countries in Africa Asia and Europe. Scania's logo shows a griffin from the coat of arms of the province of Scania. AB Scania-Vabis was established in 1911 as the result of a merger between Södertälje-based Vabis and Malmö-based Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania. Vabis was established as a railway car manufacturer in 1891 while Maskinfabriks-aktiebolaget Scania was established as a bicycle manufacturer in 1900. Both companies had tried their luck at building automobiles trucks and engines but with varied success. In 1910 Scania had succeeded in constructing reliable vehicles while Vabis was at the brink of closing down. An offer from Per Alfred Nordeman managing director of Scania to steel manufacturer Surahammars Bruk owner of Vabis led to an agreement in November 1910 and in 1911 the merger was a reality. Development and production of engines and light vehicles were set to Södertälje while trucks were manufactured in Malmö. During the Second World War Scania produced a variety of military vehicles for the Swedish Army including Stridsvagn m/41 light tanks produced under license. Scania hardcover

On letterhead of 4 Easrt Heath Road Hampstead N.W.3. London 25 September 1939. 1p. 4to. In good condition lightly aged. Signed 'Cyril Joad'. Written in the same month as Britain and France had declared war the letter begins: 'I don't know whether you are still running the Sunday Dispatch but if you are how about an article on the philosophy which underlies the Nazi rule in Germany Till war broke out one had to soft-pedal one's views of these monstrous ideas but now that it has come one can take off the muzzle and say what one likes.' He outlines the 'main heads' of his article: 'theory of the State theory of the relation of the individual to the State theory of the whole duty of man theory of the whole duty of woman views as to the education of children views as to the divinity of Hitler views as to the secret last word in autograph mission of Germans views as to the non-human character of all non-Aryans'. He has compiled a 'list of charming quotations from Nazi writers and speakers on these subjects' and the whole would make a 'keen article partly amused e.g. â€Hitler is lonely; so is God. Hitler is like God.†partly horrified e.g. “Justice and Hitler's will are one and the same thing.†and wholly denunciatory.' In an autograph postscript he writes: 'If you are not running the Dispatch how are you and what are you doing and are you ever at the Savage Club' On letterhead of 4 Easrt Heath Road, Hampstead, N.W.3. Of course Hollingshead should 'wait till the last night of "used up" ' before writing to Mathews who has 'hunted up Buckstone - hunted up Turpin - but in vain. Not a box to be had'. He has sent 'the best I could get': '3 Dress Circle to Mrs Smiles with "Mr Hollingshead's best compliments." '. In a postscript states that if Hollingshead wants 'a box for the "Overland Route" before the last night' he will be 'too happy'. 21 November 1957; 6 Liskeard Gardens London SE3 on New Statesman letterhead. 8vo 2 pp 33 lines. Good on lightly aged and creased paper. An interesting letter written by a former policeman to a former probation officer on the subject of the latter's book 'Come to Prison: A Tour through British Prisons today' Longmans 1957 about which the former has written a negative review. Begins by praising Stokes' 'really generous letter written at what cost in self-control I can only dimly imagine'. When Hewitt 'read the published review' he thought 'that it was still on the whole unfair'. 'I hate reviewing really and am a bad reviewer. Objectivity eludes me and I pontificate as if I were the only man in the world with the knowledge of the subject.' He claims what he 'really thought' was that 'the name of Sewell Stokes commands respect'. He remembers 'how very impressed G. W. Stonier was years ago with Court Circular though I thought that book was unfair!' He is writing 'an Observer "profile" ' of Sir Lionel Fox whom they both admire.
