123 Park Street Grosvenor Square London . 10 January 1855. Written on both sides of a 13 x 11 cm piece of paper. Cropped resulting in loss of text from both sides and with the front of the letter i.e. the side not bearing the signature bearing traces of glue from mount. Otherwise in fair condition lightly aged and worn. Ford begins by stating that Colville's 'letter of the 7th has been to Heavitree his country house near Exeter & back & only reached me this morning'. He continues by explaining that 'The Manzanilla is to be had at Gormans 16. Mark Lane & if you use my name you will be sure to be well served.' In the third edition of his 'Handbook for Travellers in Spain' published later in the year Ford would write: 'Excellent manzanilla is to be procured in London of Gorman 16 Mark Lane. Drink it ye dyspeptics!' The recto of the letter ends here but there is clearly text lacking as a result of the cropping as the letter continues on the reverse: '… day. But you will come & meet Keir – who is now in the North when I will put before you some real Montilla a Cordovese wine: the finest sherry is called Amontillado from its approach to its flavour Yours most truly Richd Ford'. 123 Park Street, Grosvenor Square [ London ]. 10 January 1855. unknown

His wife 'who always manages my St Anns Votes' says that his are engaged 'for two or 3 elections' but should circumstances change she will think of his request. The 'cards & cake' were safely received along with the news of Walton's 'change of estate'. He hopes to 'find him again a neighbour' the following season. Richard Redgrave RA landscape artist as Keeper of Paintings at South Kensington Museum now Victoria and Albert. Autograph Letter Signed declining to buy a painting as it is a portrait and they are in any case short of gallery space.
22 March 1859; on letterhead of the Science and Art Department South Kensington London W. Redgrave’s entry in the Oxford DNB praises his ‘exceptional administrative skill’ and states that ‘Redgrave and Cole supervised the new South Kensington Museum now the Victoria and Albert Museum for which Redgrave designed the innovative art gallery to house John Sheepshanks's extensive collection of British art given to the state in 1857.’ 1p 12mo. On grey paper. In good condition laid down on part of a leaf from an autograph album. Pasted down at the head of the letter is a thin strip on which is printed ‘Inspector-General for Art. R. Redgrave R.A.’ The male recipient is unnamed. Responding to a letter of the previous day he explains that it is ‘not the practice to receive works at South Kensington on Sale except where there is a prospect of the Department purchasing - and portraits do not come within the scope of our purchases.’ They are in addition ‘deficient in gallery space’ if the National Portrait Gallery were ‘better off in this respect’ the recipient’s offer would be one they would be better placed to entertain. 22 March 1859; on letterhead of the Science and Art Department, South Kensington, London W. unknown

He begins by pointing out that his daughter is not to blame for the late reply: 'it is my own fault my correspondence being somewhat in arrears'. He continues by expressing his satisfaction on hearing that Stocks is 'about to practice your profession in Leamington as a teacher of Landscape. I can have no doubt of your success from the works I have seen of yours in our public exhibitions as well as from the one which I had the pleasure of purchasing for the Kensington Collection' Stocks's 'The Last Gleam' in the Victoria and Albert Museum. That picture gives him 'equal satisfaction now as when I first obtained it'. He is also aware of 'how constantly you have studied nature in my own neighbourhood in the country'.
