A striking reverse glass mammoth albumen art photo of romantically dressed young boy & girl studying rolled up manuscripts atlas and globe.
Columbus OH: Baker’s Art Gallery 1896. One mammoth sized reverse glass albumen photo 14 x 22.2 in. photographer’s imprint w/in negative at lower corner in contemporary decorative Arts & Crafts frame very minor tidemark faintly darkening upper left corner wooden frame w/ minor scuffing a VG exemplar w/ bright strong contrast. Baker’s Art Gallery first founded by Lorenzo Baker 1834-1924 during the Civil War produced innumerable family portraits commercial images photographs of famous people and during the 1890’s a series of reverse glass albumen mammoth images. In this image the globe being studied by the young pair appears to be an 18 inch Rand McNally terrestrial globe with the young boy seated atop the desk and a Renaissance revival chair behind the flowing gown of the young girl. The others marketed from about 1896-1900 included a mother and two daughters “The Recital†and another image of young girl with mother painting and holding an artist’s palette all seemingly with same models. Celebrities who sat for the Bakers included Annie Oakley Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes William McKinley Theodore Roosevelt Franklin Delano Roosevelt William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding. Four generations of the Baker family operated the studio in Columbus until 1955 when the studio closed and family donated negatives and photographs to the Ohio History Center. Disbound in a cloth-covered box.<br /></p><p>Rare first edition of this funeral oration for Lorenzo de Medici read in Santa Maria Nuova on 16 April 1492 evidently the only contemporary printed oration of the many delivered and printed in his honor to survive.</p><p>"Lorenzo de' Medici… born January 1 1449 Florence Italy—died April 9 1492 Careggi near Florence Florentine statesman ruler and patron of arts and letters was the most brilliant of the Medici. He ruled Florence with his younger brother Giuliano 1453–78 from 1469 to 1478 and after the latter's assassination was sole ruler from 1478 to 1492." Brittanica.com</p><p>The present publication is the sole oration devoted to Lorenzo in the Short-Title List of Funeral Orations from the Italian Renaissance Ca. 1374-1534 compiled by John McManamon and the only printed example featured in the 1992 exhibition at the Bibliotheca Nazionale Centrale <i>Lorenzo dopo Lorenzo La Fortuna Storica di Lorenzo il Magnifico. </i>Notwithstanding the poor survival rate of ephemeral publications and the controversial character of the <i>laudandus</i> the statistic remains remarkable. The motive for the present oration was overwhelmingly political and meant to insure continuation of the traditionally strong alliance between Naples and Florence at a difficult time of dynastic transition. According to Miglio <i>DBI </i>X.369-70 the work was published before it was read.</p><p>A Naples edition was published the same year from the press of Cristannus Preller IGI VI.1722-A. The work was re-published in the 19th century by Vito Capialbi <i>in Memorie di R. Zeno e A. Bienato</i> Naples 1838 49-86. Milanese born Aurelio Bienato was Reader in Rhetoric at the University of Naples 1470-80 and later elected Bishop of Martirano modern Catanzaro in which sinecure he remained until his death. Boston 1802 Russell & Cutler.Brown stiff wrs. later covers hand lettered spine foxing 152p. 11 x 17.7 cm. solid lacks original covers sold "as is" due to condition. FIRST EDITION The work is attributed to Samuel Lorenzo Knapp 19 January 1783-8 July 1838 was a United States author and lawyer. and Benjamin Silliman 8 August 1779 -24 November 1864 and who was an American chemist one of the first American professors of science at Yale University and the first to distill petroleum. He was also famous for his attack on Republicanism Mary Wollstonecraft 27 April 1759 -10 September 1797 who was an 18th century British writer philosopher and advocate of women's rights. Silliman also wrote against William Godwin. Both Knapp & Silliman were prominent scholars and writers of the time and we believe that if they actually did write this book it was surely in the early years of their life. It is noteworthy that DNB does not cite this work for either of these authors nor for Wollstonecraft. She posed as a Hindu in this work! Regardless this illusive work is seldom found. Due to the poor quality of the paper copies when found are commonly foxed as is ours. Samuel Knapp wrote this monograph while an undergraduate at Dartmouth University. He discusses the very early concept of 'women's rights' which were almost non-existant at that time. Essentially an early study of Hindu poetry and the SONG OF SONGS. Sold "as is" in the foxed condition "with all faults" but complete otherwise. Not refundable so please inquire prior to purchase for more or better scans. Il est surtout connu pour avoir écrit plusieurs livrets d’opéras pour Salieri, Martini et Mozart ( Noces de Figaro et Don Juan). Sa vie aventureuse d’exilé chronique s’acheva en Amérique vers où il avait embarqué en 1805 pour fuir des créanciers. Ses Mémoires parurent en anglais (New-York 1823-1827 en 4 volumes). Il y relate les vicissitudes d’une carrière aussi longue qu’agitée. En tête du volume se trouve une lettre de Lamartine adressée au traducteur français : « Voici les Mémoires les plus originaux et les plus anecdotiques que l’Italie ait offerts à la curiosité publique(…). D’Aponte est, dans ses Mémoires, aussi écrivain que Goldoni, aussi léger que le chevalier de Grammont, aussi aventureux que Gil Blas, aussi plaisant que Figaro, aussi malheureux que Gilbert. Ressuscitez cet homme enseveli mal à propos. Ses mémoires introuvables étaient enfouis dans cette forêt d’Amérique qu’on appelle New-York ». Lamartine tenait un exemplaire de l’édition originale américaine de Saint-Hilaire. Il le confia à La Chavanne pour qu’il puisse en rédiger une traduction. Rousseurs.

A scarce survival from Lorenzo Snow’s trial in the U.S. Supreme Court for polygamy under the Edmunds Act where two of his three convictions were eventually overturned as the court determined that the offense was continuous and therefore only warranted a single conviction. George Ticknor Curtis defended Snow and published this edition of his speech himself. Curtis argued that Snow had lived continuously with one woman and defended his right to have multiple “wives†as a matter of religious freedom. The first bilingual edition of Pinckney’s Treaty of San Lorenzo which ended the West Florida Conflict by establishing an amicable agreement between Spain and the United States for the navigation of the Mississippi River. Thomas Pinckney signed as a representative of the United States and Manuel de Godoy signed in the name of Carlos IV of Spain. The agreement’s effects were far reaching as the ceded land that became the Mississippi Territory - particularly the Natchez region - formed a gateway for the United States expansion into the Southwest by destabilizing Spanish power. A landmark treaty uncommon in its first bilingual edition. Rear wrap and final leaf detached and lacking the passports. <p>RARE FIRST EDITION OF LORENZO MASCHERONI's TREATISE ABOUT THE USE OF THE COMPASS IN GEOMETRY</p><p>UNTRIMMED AND UNCUT COPY IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPPER</p><p>Mascheroni Lorenzo. <i>La geometria del compasso di Lorenzo Mascheroni. </i>Pavia : presso gli eredi di Pietro Galeazzi anno V della Repubblica francese 1797.</p><p>8to 223 x 130 mm original printer's wrappers; pp. 2 XVIII 264 14 leaves of folding plates woodcut decoration at title page friezes and headletters. </p><p>The principle of economy in geometric constructions</p><p>First edition of Mascheroni's most important work with a dedication in verse to Napoleon in which he proves that any geometrical construction of Euclidean geometry can be carried out by means of compasses alone admitting that a straight line is constructed once two of its points have been defined thus demonstrating how a certain principle of economics in geometric constructions proclaimed by all the great mathematicians of the past from Pappus to Descartes was regularly and violated by the use of two tools where only one was enough.</p><p>His approach was to first demonstrate how to use the compass alone to bisect a given arc of a circle add and subtract two given segments find the fourth proportional given three segments find the point of intersection of two given lines and the points of intersection between a given line and a circle.</p><p>At this point Mascheroni theoretically demonstrated how all constructions completed with ruler and compass can be considered as a composition of the elementary operations defined above and therefore obtained using only the compass. In the spirit of the Enlightenment this work is not meant to be just theoretical but is also designed to facilitate the construction of precision instruments. </p><p>Although some authors such as the Danish G. Mohr had sought before Mascheroni the solution of certain geometrical problems by using the compass alone he was able to deal with the subject of the geometry of the compass with such depth and in such a general way to make his forerunner forgotten.</p><p>Lorenzo Mascheroni 1750 - 1800 was an Italian mathematician scholar and academic who since 1778 taught physics and mathematics at the Bergamo seminary.</p><p>His most important contributions concern mathematical analysis with studies related to integral calculus and natural logarithms construction science with its original studies on arc-breaking calculus and geometry with the demonstration that solvable problems with row and compasses can also be solved with just the compass.</p><p>His name is also linked to the Euler-Mascheroni constant of which he calculated the first 32 decimal digits. The Euler – Mascheroni constant also called Euler's constant is a mathematical constant recurring in analysis and number theory usually denoted by the lowercase Greek letter gamma γ.</p><p>It is defined as the limiting difference between the harmonic series and the natural logarithm.</p><p>Napoleon whose passion for science and mathematics is known met Mascheroni in 1796 during the invasion northern Italy and was intrigued by his theories ion the use of the compasses becoming they say a great expert. "General we could expect from you everything but geometry lessons": with this sentence the mathematician Laplace and Lagrange welcomed Napoleon's explanations on Mascheroni's constructions whose book just a year after the Italian edition in 1798 was translated into French by Charette.</p><p>Conditions: Light marks of use along the text small warmholes never touching the text in general very good copy printed on strong paper untrimmed and uncut in its original paper wrapper.</p><p>References: RICCARDI P. Small NY State Library stamp on the margin of the first page with a small withdrawal stamp in the margin of the last. Some soiling to the outer leaves. <br /> <br /> Announces a convention to be held at Cincinnati on May 19 1868 and promotes Lorenzo Sherwood's candidacy for President. The League was an attempt to combat the railroad monopoly and thereby to reduce fares for freight. Sherwood 1810-1869 a legislator lawyer abolitionist and political nonconformist spent 10 years in Texas prior to the Civil War working as an attorney representing shipping and freight concerns. The outset of the war found him in New York on business where he stayed. An outspoken abolitionist and advocate of extreme versions of Reconstruction including military occupation of the South he was a notable figure of the time. Much of the text here consists of newspaper extracts many from the Washington Great Republic touting the organization activities and Sherwood's candidacy. Oxford American National Biography. They also support government subsidies for "a railroad to unite the Gulf of Mexico at Mobile and Pensacola with the lakes at Cleveland and Chicago." <br /> The League's membership roster which includes many members of Congress is printed. The pamphlet includes a Letter from the League to the organizers of a mass meeting of the 'Cheap-Freight Railway League' in Houston and prints various endorsements of the League's goals.<br /> FIRST EDITION. Engraved armorial title-vignette featuring a figure with a football by Francesco Nacci two folding engraved plates one with players lined up for play in the Piazza Sante Croce by Alexander Cecchini and one a diagram of player's positions. 4to in nineteenth-century marbled boards backed in black morocco the spine gilt lettered and with multi-line gilt ruled flat bands additional gilt tooling at the foot bookplate of Franco Niccoli to front paste-down. xii 118 2 manuscript entries pp. A very handsome and proper copy of this rare book with a couple of contemporary marginal annotations and one contemporary manuscript leaf bound at the end a little scattered foxing throughout but not obtrusive. RARE FIRST EDITION OF PIETRO BINI'S ANTHOLOGY ON FLORENTINE FOOTBALL a forerunner to the modern games of soccer rugby and American football. THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST TREATISES ON THAT PREDECESSOR TO OUR MODERN GAMES.<br> In the game of calcio two teams each consisting usually of 27 men are engaged on an enclosed ground of 172 x 82 braccie fiorentine just little smaller than a modern football field. The action consists of carrying and kicking a pumped ball of medium size with fists and feet hence the name calcio in order to make it pass beyond the terminal barriers of the adversaries' half. One such successful action is called caccia. The team making the most caccie is the winner. Games typically last one hour and are played 'for honour's sake'.<br> The wonderfully detailed description of the game is largely by Giovanni de' Bardi and though it was first published anonymously nearly a century earlier the text included here is greatly expanded and illustrated. It fully explains the rules and manners of the game and describes a number of games that had recently been played in and near Florence. The double-page plate depicts a match in the Piazza Santa Croce is very impressive and provides us with a lasting 17th century "instant replay" of the event.
