Presentation copy from the author inscribed at the foot of the title: "All' Illmo Conte Tommaso della Gherardesca. l'Autore." </p> <p>First Edition inscribed by the author. This is the first inscribed copy of a major seventeenth century medical classic that has been on the market in more than a decade. Bellini professor of anatomy and medical theory at Pisa was one of the Italian founders of iatromechanics a system that framed physiologic events such as the circulation of the blood in terms of mathematical and physical principles. Bellini's De urinis et pulsibus represents the first important attempt by an Italian scientist to systematically apply iatromechanics to medical theory. "William Harvey's theory of the circulation was of fundamental importance to Bellini and other proponents of iatromechanism. Bellini asserted that good health depended on optimal function of the circulation of the blood and that disease was a manifestation of an inefficient circulation. Rejecting ancient humoral pathology he viewed blood as a physical fluid with specific properties that could be interpreted in terms of mathematical and physical principles. . . . Bellini emphasized that disease was often due to alterations in the elasticity or 'tone' of the solids or in the density of the fluids which hindered their motion. This in turn could cause local congestion or stagnation. Bellini's enthusiastic support of therapeutic bleeding reflected this pathophysiologic concept. He tried to prove that this phlebotomy increased the velocity of the circulation thereby washing away 'morbid matter' and restoring health" Fye pp. 181-82. </p> <p>In the book's section on diseases of the chest Bellini reported "several forms of heart disease especially of the syncopal type . . . in his book De urinis et pulsibus Bellini discusses the state of the coronary arteries and admits that the condition which he calls 'pressio' is dangerous and may cause the contraction of the heart to be abolished p. 541. He also has in mind external pressure by tumors fat and so on. However an intra-arterial coronary impediment of blood-flow by calcification was clearly described by this author. Bellini reported of a patient who died of a condition similar to the clinical picture of coronary disease as we now understand it in whose coronary arteries he found a 'stone.' It seems quite reasonable to deduce that Bellini saw in the post-mortem a coronary occlusion" Leibowitz History of Coronary Heart Disease p. 71. </p> <p>Bellini's work is also important in the history of urology as it marks the first important contribution to the chemical analysis of urine. Recognizing the value of urine as a diagnostic aid Bellini insisted on its chemical analysis in pathologic conditions. </p> <p>Bellini presented this copy of De urinis et pulsibus to Tommaso della Gherardesca 1654-1721 a distinguished member of an important Tuscan aristocratic family and as such a likely patron. Gherardesca was appointed bishop of Fiesole in 1702 and archbishop of Florence in 1703; he also founded the Seminario Maggiori di Firenze in 1712. The rarity of this inscription by Bellini cannot be overestimated. This is the first inscribed book by Bellini we have seen on the market in more than 40 years and it is also the first inscribed copy of a major seventeenth century classic on any aspect of medicine that we have seen on the market in more than a decade possibly longer. In addition this copy is clearly in the original binding in which it was presented and with the exception of one leaf which was inexplicably torn through and repaired the copy is in fine even very fine condition for a work of this period</p> . <p>Garrison-Morton 762.1 4162. Francisco Bellini lived from 1643 and 1704 was an Italian physician and anatomist who did pioneering work in nephrology as early as the age of 19 when a paper he published while a student at the University of Pisa "Anatomical Exercise on the Structure and Function of the Kidney" presented for the first time Bellini's findings that "the kidney consists of an immense number of tiny canals". Britannica. He also was an early proponent of the value of urinalysis as a tool to arrive at a sound diagnosis. Bellini later became official court physician to Duke Cosimo III and Pope Clement XI. Das Serum von Blut getrennt geht in die Nierenkanäle und das Blut vom serösen Humor befreit geht in die Venen. Diese Abtrennung jedoch erfolgt weder durch Attraktion noch durch Verwandschaft noch durch Sympathie sondern wird einzig und allein durch die dies fordernde Konfiguration der Gefäße vollendet«. Diese rein mechanische Auffassung der Nierenfunktion setzte sich außerordentlich schnell durch und blieb im wesentlichen bis in 19. Jhdt. hinein bestehen." "Darüber hinaus zog Bellini aus seinen Versuchen einen sehr wichtigen Schluß daß die eigentliche Menge des Harns da dieser mit mehr oder weniger Wasser verdünnt sein könne nur aus seinem Gewicht erkannt werden könne: »Hieraus geht hervor« schreibt er weiter »daß das Auge nicht sicher urteilen kann welche Lockerheit oder Dichte der Harn habe . deshalb müssen wir zum Wägen unsere Zuflucht nehmen mit dessen Hilfe die Menge eines Stoffes nicht durch den Vergleich mit dem Raum den das ganze Gemisch einzunehmen scheint beurteilt wird sondern in dem man die gesamte Masse des Körpers vergleicht mit der bekannten Masse eines Körpers von bekanntem Gewicht der genauso schwer ist«. In völlig exakter und heute noch vertretbarer Weise erklärt taucht hier erstmals der Begriff der Dichte des Harns auf." "Doch in den Teilen der Abhandlung die sich mit der medizinischen Bedeutung des Harns befassen tauchen die neuen Methoden der Harnuntersuchung nicht mehr auf. Hauptsächlich werden die Harnregeln der Hippokratischen Schriften kommentiert. . Bellini the celebrated Florentine anatomist and pupil of Borelli was among the earliest physicians to describe the fine tubular structures of the kidneys later known as the "Bellini ducts." The work explores the structure and function of the kidneys urinary secretion and related anatomical systems through direct observation and dissection reflecting the increasingly empirical approach to medicine emerging from the Dutch and Italian scientific traditions of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The volume also includes prefatory material referencing major medical figures including Hermann Boerhaave and Bernhard Siegfried Albinus linking the work directly to the great Leiden medical school tradition.<br /> <br /> The book is illustrated with finely engraved anatomical plates depicting detailed renal and urinary structures including sectional views of kidneys and associated vessels and ducts. Arnold Langerak 1711. <br /> <br /> An early eighteenth-century anatomical work by the celebrated Florentine physician and anatomist Laurentius Lorenzo Bellini one of the foremost medical investigators of the seventeenth century and a noted pupil of Giovanni Alfonso Borelli. Bellini is best remembered for his pioneering studies of renal anatomy particularly the anatomical structures now known as the "Bellini ducts." This 1711 Leiden edition focuses on the structure and function of the kidneys as well as the physiology of taste de Gustus Organo reflecting the period's growing interest in empirical anatomy and physiological experimentation. The text represents an important contribution to the early scientific understanding of nephrology and urinary anatomy during the formative years of modern medicine.<br /> <br /> Especially notable are the impressive engraved folding anatomical plates depicting the kidneys urinary structures vascular systems and associated anatomical subjects in rich detail. The work combines scientific rigor with the artistry characteristic of early medical illustration making it highly desirable for collectors of anatomy nephrology urology and the history of medicine. The volume stands as an excellent example of early eighteenth-century continental medical printing and anatomical scholarship.<br /> <br /> Condition & Binding: Half black morocco over marbled boards spine gilt-lettered "Bellini" with decorative gilt floral ornaments. Binding remains sound and attractive overall with moderate rubbing and wear to extremities including some loss at the headcap and minor scuffing to boards. Internally generally clean with scattered foxing toning and occasional light staining throughout somewhat heavier to preliminary leaves. Folding engraved anatomical plates are present and appear complete showing expected creasing and light edgewear from folding but remaining highly attractive. Overall- very good. Joh.
