‎Maugham W. Somerset‎

‎On A Chinese Screen.‎

‎London: William Heinemann 1922. First edition of this classic travel book by the author of The Razor's Edge. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in the rare original dust jacket with light wear and expert restoration. It is a series of short sketches Maugham made during a trip along the Yangtze River in 1919-1920 and although ostensibly about China the book is equally focused on the various westerners he met during the trip and their struggles to accept or adapt to the cultural differences they encounter which are often as enormous and as alienating as the country itself. A suitably atmospheric lobby card for this adaptation to the screen of Maugham's 1942 wartime espionage thriller. The 1944 film starred Franchot Tone and Veronica Lake directed by Frank Tuttle. ‎<p>Photograph signed "W. Somerset Maugham" in black ink on the mount of a striking portrait of Maugham from the chest up with him leaning his cheek on his right hand. Signed in full. The photograph is stamped "Pirie MacDonald Photographer-of-Men New York." The image measures approximately 6" x 9" and is affixed to MacDonald's original mounting board which measures 11" x 14". ‎Culver City: Selznick Studio 1941. Original 8 x 10" b&w silver print glossy. About fine with mimeographed snipe affixed to lower edge. About fine. An uncredited publicity portrait of Maugham circulated to the press on the occasion of public announcement of Maugham's having signed on to produce an original WWII screenplay for Selznick. The agreement was reached in 1941 and was to have involved 12 weeks of Maugham's work but the project never reached completion Selznick instead turning to work on SINCE YOU WENT AWAY as his contribution to the war effort. The seven- line squib announces Maugham's agreement with all hyperbole one would expect from a Hollywood publicist. Selznick Studio unknown books‎

‎London: William Heinemann 1930 First edition first printing. Inscribed by the author to his friend Reggie Turner to front free endpaper: "For the idle Apprentice / Reginald / from his friend / WM". Publisher's smooth black cloth stamped in gilt to front board with a design of a dragon with a forked tongue and the author's symbol title lettered in gilt spine lettered in gilt and stamped with pagoda design; in the original matching dust jacket stamped in red over a beige background. A near fine copy with a few faint white spots to cloth light foxing to front endpapers front hinge starting at first free leaf but overall generally sturdy; in a near fine dust jacket with some light soiling and toning to extremities rubbed to spine ends and corners. Overall a beautiful copy inscribed by the author. Stott A39a. This copy is inscribed to Reginald "Reggie" Turner 1869-1938. Himself an author Turner was a member of Oscar Wilde's literary circle that included writers like H. G. Wells D. H. Lawrence and W. Somerset Maugham. Notably the friendship between Maughan and Turner began when Turner wrote an appreciative review of one of Maugham's earliest plays Lady Frederick which was first performed in 1907. The Gentleman in the Parlour is an account of Maugham's travels through Southeast Asia beginning in what was then Burma and ending in Haiphong Vietnam. His detailed and charming descriptions of the people and places he encountered provide a vivid picture of the countries he visited. Maugham writes a disclaimer about the book to his readers at the beginning of his fourth chapter: "I am writing it for my own diversion and I hope that it will divert also such as care to spend a few hours in reading it. I am a professional writer and I hope to get from it a certain amount of money and perhaps a little praise.". Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. Somerset Maugham". Publisher's smooth blue cloth lettered in gilt to front board and spine and stamped in black with the author's symbol and publisher's name; in the original black pictorial dust jacket with an illustration of a ship passing by dark houses. A near fine copy with a touch of toning to spine and rubbing to spine ends a few faint white spots to rear board; in a near fine dust jacket unclipped with a few scratches and light wear to extremities shallow chips to spine ends. Overall a beautiful copy. Stott A44a. Fred Bason 1907-1973 now best known as the author of A Bibliography of the Writings of William Somerset Maugham 1931 was a close friend and admirer of the noted English author. In a letter that also expressed Bason's thoughts - all negative - on one of Maugham's plays the young Bason extended an invitation to the author to join him for tea and so began their decade-long friendship. A secondhand bookseller and small-time writer himself Bason saw Maugham as a mentor and with his guidance published a few pieces in literary magazines. Early in their friendship Maugham inscribed several books to Bason given to him along with advice to sell them when the market was right. Finding this a profitable endeavor Bason continued to request signed books from his once-mentor and friend eventually leading to the end of their relationship. The Narrow Corner is a novel about three men who find themselves navigating the waters of the Malay Archipelago together. One the captain of the boat staying out at sea to avoid his wife and the others an opium-smoking doctor making his way back to China and a young mysterious Australian man wanted for a murder. Largely an exploration of the characters and their backstories the book is written in Maugham's characteristic vivid straightforward prose. Notably in 1933 the book was adapted for a film of the same name directed by Alfred E. Green. Inscribed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included. ‎The Razor’s Edge.‎

‎London: William Heinemann Ltd 1944. First British edition of Maugham's 20th-century manifesto for human fulfillment. Octavo original cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. An exceptional example. "Written after much painstaking research into Eastern philosophy and mysticism The Razor's Edge is Maugham's 20th-century manifesto for human fulfillment. In it he mercilessly satirizes American and European materialism and holds up the figure of the spiritual seeker as a model for those searching for meaning in existence" Stringer. It was twice adapted into film first in 1946 starring Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney and Herbert Marshall as Maugham and Anne Baxter as Sophie and then a 1984 adaptation starring Bill Murray.
