Fenelon relates the imaginary adventures of Telemaque son of Ulysses who leaves Ithaca to search for his father who has been long delayed on his return from Troy. Telemaque accompanied by the goddess Minerva in the guise of the wise old man Mentor meets with adventures that have no relation to the Odyssey but rather resemble those of a knight-errant amid Greek surroundings charmingly described. With this story Fenelon combines precepts of physical and intellectual education political utopias and moral dissertations. Binding thoroughly worn but sound; text generally clean. <em>The Adventures of Telemachus</em> was written in 1693-94 by Archbishop Fenelon at Cambray where he had been confined by order of Louis XIV. Superficially an account of the wanderings and adventures of Ulysses' son Telemachus the book was in reality a reformist argument for limiting the absolute power of the French monarchy ‘for the use and instruction of the Dauphin of France to guard him in an allegorical way against forming his conduct after the bad example of his Grandfather Louis XIV’. Fénelon went so far as to write "Good kings are rare and the generality of monarchs bad†a sentiment especially displeasing to the Sun King. Provenance: Contemporary manuscript ownership inscription dated 1762 to flyleaf. Doyle sale 13BP04 2013 Lot 311. Second Pennsylvania edition third edition overall first published in London in 1735 and first published in Pennsylvania in 1738. F�nelon was a French Roman Catholic archbishop theologian poet and writer. He is remembered primarily as the author of "The Adventures of Telemachus" first published in 1699. The "Lady" referred to in the title is Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte-Guyon commonly known as Madame Guyon a French mystic and one of the key advocates of Quietism although she never called herself a Quietist. Quietism was considered heretical by the Roman Catholic Church and she was imprisoned from 1695 to 1703 after publishing a book on the topic "A Short and Easy Method of Prayer." F�nelon first met Madame Guyon in 1688 and soon became one of her most well-known disciples. "In fact so popular among the Quakers were both F�nelon and Guyon that their texts were repeatedly translated and published throughout Pennsylvania during both the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In 1738 William Bradford published excerpts from F�nelon's theological works as well as the autobiography of Madame Guyon in a work entitled 'The Archbishop of Cambray's Dissertation on Pure Love with an account of the Life and Writings of the Lady for whose sake the Archbishop was banished from the Court.' This was re-published by Christopher Sauer again in Pennsylvania in 1750 as here. In this reprint Guyon was characterized as 'a martyr to Catholic intolerance a Protestant in disguise or an example of inner perfection�' Numerous German translations of Guyon and F�nelon's work were also published by Pennsylvania Quakers such as Johann Kayser and Gerhard Teersteegen during the same period" Karen Pagani "Forgiveness and the Age of Reason" p. 308. Light foxing and wear contemporary ownership inscriptions in text contemporary notations on front fly leaf. Very good. A Germantown Pennsylvania printing of Fenelon's work a selection of his OEUVRES SPIRITUELLES first published under this title in London in 1735. Fenelon 1651-1715 was a French archbishop theologian and writer best known for his work THE ADVENTURES OF TELEMACHUS first published in 1699. The title refers to Fenelon's banishment from court for friendship with a lady Madame Guyon whose Quietist views were considered heretical. Despite Fenelon's protestations that he did not share such beliefs that in combination with his publication of TELEMACHUS earned him the ire of Louis XIV. Later in life Fenelon wrote several anti-Jansenist works as well. This edition is notable for emanating from the press of Christopher Saur. In 1738 Saur established the first German-language press in America in Germantown near Philadelphia and his family continued printing there through the end of the century. Interestingly this work is in English one of the first of his English language imprints. Rare. This copy is further distinguished by having the ownership inscriptions of three women. The first on the front fly leaf reads: "This book Ann Cooper's in the year 1751 Price three shillings." The second inscription reads: "the gift of Ann Cooper's daughter Ann Whita several letters lost." Finally the top of the titlepage is inscribed in what would appear to be an early 19th- century hand: "Joseph and Hannah Whitall." First edition of the Roman Catholic archbishop theologian and poet's collection of aphorisms published posthumously. It is likely to be a translation of "Maximes morales et politiques" from Les Aventures de Télémaque Fénelon's hugely popular didactic novel first published anonymously in 1699 and reissued under his name in 1717. Télémaque his scathing critique of the autocratic government of Louis XIV recommends the introduction of a parliamentary system and the abolition of the mercantile system. Full calf of the time boards have been reattached with paper hinges inside cracking some rubbing and wear to leather spine cover worn spine tips chipped. Interior has institutional library bookplate and stamp on title page some damp staining at the top gutter throughout some pages more marked than others otherwise clean and unmarked. Aged but still usable. Quite scarce in commerce this corresponds to ESTC N34997. Fenelon wrote a book based on a mystical idea known as Quietism. He was a friend of Bossuet's and very involved in the French church. When the book came out in the late1600s Bossuet was shocked that his friend has strayed into what he considered heresy.
