Les Aventures de Télémaque suivies des Aventures d'Aristonoüs.
Paris J. Mallet et Cie 1840. Un fort vol. in-4 257 x 158 mm de 1 f. bl. 2 ff. n.fol. 1 frontispice n.fol. xvii - 590 pp. 1 f. n.fol. et 1 f. bl. Reliure de plein maroquin lie-de-vin filet gras à froid encadrant les plats lesquels s'ornent d'un large décor fleuronné doré dos lisse à l'identique titre doré toutes tranches dorées. . ''Leading exponent of the rocaille school of binding ; much of Boutigny's works were done anonymously for publishers''. in Ramsden. ''M. Nonobstant belle condition. Paris, J. Mallet et Cie, 1840. The Adventures of Telemachus the Son of Ulysses
ont> C. and G. Kearsley : London 1795 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A finely bound large paper edition Hawkesworth's translation of Fenelon's classic novel about Telemachus the son of Ulysses. Illustrated with thirteen plates. Complete as two volumes in one. Illustrated with twelve plates. Collated complete. ESTC citation number T144015. With an index of the names and characters in the novel. 'The Adventures of Telemachus' is a novel about the educational journey of Telemachus who is a central character in 'Odyssey' by Homer. The novel follows him as he travels with his mysterious tutor Mentor. This novel proved unpopular with the French royalty upon its publication as Louis XIV believed that the work criticised his reign rife with war taxes and famine of the peasantry. Originally written in French by Francois Fenelon. Fenelon was a French writer who became a royal tutor in 1689 to Louis XIV eldest son. Though it is generally believed that Fenelon had a dramatic effect on the improvement of the young royal. Translated into English by John Hawkesworth the English writer and book editor. Alongside Samuel Johnson he founded a periodical called 'The Adventurer' and also compiled debates for the 'Gentleman's Magazine'. Corrected and revised by G. Gregory. Most of the plates are illustrated by Thomas Stothard the noted English painter . Bookplate to the front pastedown 'Rick Artwright'. This is probably from the son of the inventor and Industrial Revolution entrepreneur Richard Artwright. Bookplate to the recto to the front endpaper 'John H. Mills. Derby'.
