Ample and calligraphic handwriting in violet ink. A tear without loss of text to the first page. Eloquent letter testifying to Pierre Louÿs' fragile health in the last years of his life: ""Vous me retrouvez en pleine crise d'emphysème. Médecins. Ventouses. Potions. Régime. Intertitude chaque jour sur la journée du lendemain."" You find me in the midst of an emphysema crisis. Doctors. Cupping. Potions. Regimen. Uncertainty each day about the next day. The letter also reveals the writer's passion for dramaturgy notably through the mention of Gustave Quinson then director of the Palais-Royal theatre. ""Voulez-vous être tout à fait gentil Envoyez-moi d'abord votre livret que je suis si curieux de connaître."" Would you be so kind First send me your libretto which I am so curious to know. unknown

One of four volumes in the eighteenth collection released by the publisher as part of "L'Ecrin Secret du Bibliophile" series. No. 180 of 1500. "Les Chansons Secretes de Bilitis" was first published in 1894 by Belgian eroticist Pierre Louys who presented the poems as a collection by an ancient Greek courtesan and contemporary of Sappho named Bilitis. The collection is presented in three cycles "Bucoliques en Pamphilie" poems of Bilitis' childhood and first love "Elegies a Lesbos" of her homosexual exploration and "Epigrammes dans l'ile de Chypre" of Bilitis' later life as a writer and courtesan. Though Bilitis is not a real historical figure Louys' fabulations occupy an important place in LGBTQ history as the namesake for the first American lesbian civil rights organization Daughters of Bilitis. I'm sure there is one but I don't see it. Some of the pages have not been cut. This book was printed on top quality paper which has aged to a creamy ivory. All plates are present with tissue guards. The top edge is gilded. The jacket which is made of parchment has slight edgewear a small closed tear at the back and the spine has tanned. Normally I would put a mylar Brodart cover on such a jacket but the slipcase is also present and if Brodarted the book would not fit in to it. The slipcase is sound but with some wear to the edges. A FASCINATING LETTER FROM PIERRE LOUS TO FELLOW AUTHOR CLAUDE FARRERE in which Louÿs explains that he is about to receive the Légion d'Honneur and that he is baffled as to how that could have happened. He goes on to sympathize with Farrère over the latter's problems with women. In a post-script he asks Farrère to tell nobody about the award. Nice 1899. AN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL UNPUBLISHED LETTER FROM PIERRE LOUS TO HIS BROTHER THE DIPLOMAT GEORGES LOUIS. Dated February 6 1899. 4 pages two conjugate leaves; about 400 words in very legible script written in Louÿs' characteristic purple ink. Louÿs begins by reminding his brother that today is the twentieth anniversary of the onset of their mother's terminal illness. He goes on to discuss his travels in the South of France; his anger over a publisher's rejection letter; his troubles with money which he discusses with good humor knowing his beloved older brother will bail him out; and his recent purchase of a Malagasy-French dictionary in preparation for his trip to Madagascar. He goes on to discuss his love for the Malagasy language giving several examples of words he finds charming and to tell his brother how much he misses him. Finally he reveals that he will depart for Algiers in the morning a decision made while writing this letter. Signed "Pierre". In perfect condition. Louÿs and his half-brother Georges wrote each other on an almost daily basis until Georges' death in 1917. One thousand of these letters--but not this one--were published in "Mille lettres inédites de Pierre Louÿs à Georges Louis 1890-1917" Paris 2002. Louÿs and his half-brother Georges wrote each other on an almost daily basis until Georges' death in 1917.
