Mann, Thomas [extensively annotated by A L Rowse]
Order of the Day. Political Essays and Speeches of Two Decades
Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Alfred A Knopf New York 1942 first English edition; 8vo 150 x 212mm; pp xvii 280 7 being publisher catalogues and a note on the technicalities of the book's typesetting and related information on Janson; blue cloth spine gilt pictorial dustwrapper a little frayed but overall in good condition. . . . The work was published simultaneously in the US by Knopf and Canada by Ryerson copies being supplied in the UK of the US version with a discreet sticker on the inner flap of the dust wrapper indicating publication there by Secker and Warburg London. This particular copy was sent by Secker & Warburg to A L Rowse to review and contains extensive jottings in pencil throughout as well as loose inserts being a commission letter from the Observer a review identifying note from Secker & Warburg and notes by Rowse. . . . Rowse's views of the book and of Mann are as one might expect acerbic and far from flattering. He notes on the dust wrapper under the portraits of Mann "The Great Man - Grim egoist" and under his own name on the front pastedown the comment "Ghastly grim readg.". The title offers the view "Unbearable to read" while its verso has the note "takes himself like the Great Man he wasn't". A unique copy.

hardcover

Mann, Thomas, and Morris, Walter D (Translator)
Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man
New York: Frederick Ungar Publishing Co 1983. Presumed First printing thus. Hardcover. Good/Good. Format is approximately 7 inches by 10.25 inches. xvii 3 435 1 pages. Footnotes. DJ has some wear tears soiling and chips. Sticker residue inside front cover. Translator's Introduction; Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man; Prologue; Chapter 1: The Protest; Chapter 2; The Unliterary Country; Chapter 3: Civiization's Literary Man; Chapter 4; Soul-Searching; Chapter 5--Burgherly Nature; Chapter 6; "Against Justice and Truth"; Chapter 7--Politics; Chapter 8--On Virtue; Chapter 9---Some Comments on Humanity; Chapter 10--On Belief; Chapter 11--The Politics of Estheticism; and Chapter 12---Irony and Radicalism. In this eloquent work that encompasses both patriotism and inner conflict; Mann weaves together the many threads of history and culture that underlay his nature and philosophy. The book reflects as well the conflict between Thomas Mann defender of the German character and the German empire and his writer-brother Heinrich who hoped for Germany's defeat so that her stubborn conservative spirit givesway to an enlightened democracy. The Real War thus became a fraternal struggle and its echoes are heard in these pages. Paul Thomas Mann 6 June 1875 - 12 August 1955 was a German novelist short story writer social critic philanthropist essayist and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. His highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized versions of German and Biblical stories as well as the ideas of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer. Mann was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and portrayed his family and class in his first novel Buddenbrooks. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann and three of Mann's six children Erika Mann Klaus Mann and Golo Mann also became significant German writers. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939 he moved to the United States then returned to Switzerland in 1952. Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur German literature written in exile by those who opposed the Hitler regime. His career as a writer began when he wrote for the magazine Simplicissimus. Mann's first short story "Little Mr. Friedemann" Der Kleine Herr Friedemann was published in 1898. On 23 June 1944 Thomas Mann was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. From a review found on-line: When the Great War broke out in August 1914 Thomas Mann like so many people on both sides of the conflict was exhilarated. Finally the era of decadence that he had anatomized in Death in Venice had come to an end; finally there was a cause worth fighting and even dying for or at least when it came to Mann himself writing about. Mann immediately picked up his pen to compose a paean to the German cause. Soon after his elder brother and lifelong rival the novelist Heinrich Mann responded with a no less determined denunciation. Thomas took it as an unforgivable stab in the back. The bitter dispute between the brothers would swell into the strange tortured brilliant sometimes perverse literary performance that is Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man a book that Mann worked on and added to throughout the war and that bears an intimate relation to his postwar masterpiece The Magic Mountain. Wild and ungainly though Mann's reflections can be they nonetheless constitute a key meditation on the freedom of the artist and the distance between literature and politics.
