Writing in February 1863 a gloomy time for the Union cause Mann writes "Our armies are demoralized- some of them almost disorganized.We are all generals soldiers and citizens seriously divided as to the duty of supporting the Administration in its prosecution of the war with the now known objects of the war and avowed intentions of our rulers." The Southern cause is prevailing and this is well known in Europe. The Union is doomed. The Middle States will secede.
