‎Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Thomas Mann, der schon mit 25 Jahren den nachmals so berühmten Roman Buddenbrooks geschrieben und bald danach die schöne, kluge und reiche Katia Pringsheim geheiratet hatte, schien geschaffen für das geruhsame Leben eines Bildungsbürgers. Aber die Zeitläufe machten ihn zu einer öffentlichen Figur und einem politischen Redner und zum Emigranten. Obwohl sein Vaterland, das in ihm seinen weltberühmten Repräsen-tanten gesehen hatte, ihn dann schmähte und verleumdete, bekannte er stets, ein Deutscher zu sein, er war, wie Hermann Bahr einmal sagte, "der deutscheste Deutsche dieser Zeit". Das Zentrum seines Lebens war jedoch immer das Schreiben, ihm war alles, auch Familienleben und Freundschaften, untergeordnet. Der Joseph-Roman und sein umfangreiches Material an Vorstudien, bei der Emigration in letzter Minute aus München gerettet, reiste, immer aufs neue sorgfältig verpackt, mit ihm über Zürich, Südfrankreich, Princeton bis nach Kalifornien, er hat an ihm auch in Hotelzimmern, im Strandkorb, in der Eisenbahn gearbeitet. Den Felix Krull schrieb er nach 40 Jahren auf der Seite des Manuskripts weiter, auf der er ihn abgebrochen hatte. Die Krise beim Abschluß des Doktor Faustus, dessen urdeutsches Thema ihn gerade in den Monaten, da das Dritte Reich unterging, tief aufgewühlt hatte, löste eine lebensbedrohende Krankheit aus.
