Schnell hat sich gezeigt, daß darüber angemessen nur vor dem Hintergrund der anderen von Homer geschilderten Vater-Sohn- bzw. Vater-Sohn ähnlichen Beziehungen zu urteilen wäre. Und dann tritt auch sofort die Frage nach dem Realitätsbezug hinzu, die aus verschiedenen, in der Einleitung noch näher zu bezeichnenden Gründen im Falle der homerischen Epen besonders knifflig ist. Immer gilt es jedenfalls, mindestens drei Bezugsebenen zu unterscheiden: die der (wenigstens im modernen Sinne) >fiktiven< heroischen Vergangenheit, die der in ihr geronnenen Gegenwart des Dichters und die der Autor-Intention schließlich. In der mittlerweile schon generationenlangen Diskussion um die homerische Ethik stellt die durchdringende Komplexität dieser drei Bezugsebenen die jeweiligen, zusätzlich von ihren eigenen Wertvorstellungen geprägten Interpreten vor nicht eben geringe Schwierigkeiten bei der Suche nach einem Archimedischen Punkt, von dem aus etwa eine homerische >Adelsethik< mit Bestimmtheit zu zeichnen wäre. Wie sollte es anders sein bei einem großen Kunstwerk? Wenn wir in einer Untersuchung nun die Kategorie >Geschlecht< zur Analyse der von Homer geschilderten Gesellschaft heranziehen, so tritt auch hier natürlich die Frage auf, inwieweit der Dichter eine bestimmte Ideologie anbietet und inwieweit Rückschlüsse auf ein je historisches Geschlechterverhältnis zur Zeit des Dichters möglich sind. Es schien mir nicht sinnvoll oder noch verfrüht, dies sauber voneinander trennen zu wollen. Wenn es mit dieser Untersuchung gelingt, das Vater-Sohn-Verhältnis in seiner gesamten Spannweite als ein bedeutsames kulturelles Konstrukt herauszuarbeiten, das auch die Handlung der homerischen Epen motiviert, scheint mir schon ein Ziel erreicht.
