Hardcover. minor shelfwear quite nice condition for a cheaply-manufactured wartime book; jacket worn at extremities wrinkling/soiling to rear panel very slight paper loss at upper right corner of front panel. WWII-era reprint of Mann's 1925 novel originally published in Germany as "Professor Unrat." The first U.K. edition and thus first in English and the first to use "The Blue Angel" title was apparently a Readers Library edition circa 1930 followed by a Jarrolds edition in 1932. Remembered today as the source of Josef von Sternberg's 1930 film THE BLUE ANGEL DER BLAUE ENGEL which catapulted Marlene Dietrich to international stardom the book wasn't published in America until 1944 when it appeared under the title "Small Town Tyrant." No translator is credited on either this edition or the American but the two are quite similar the primary difference being the name of the main character: "Mut" known as "Mud" in this edition "Gaubage" known as "Garbage" in the American. In any event all of the British printings are hard to find especially in dust jackets. If the jacket text is to be taken literally this book was the first to be issued in the publisher's "International Authors Limited" series which seems to have commenced in 1944. .
