Bound in brown full calf.In the original French. Title can be translated to Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline. From prominent French historian and philosopher Charles de Secondat baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu. First published anonymously in 1734 this detailled text on the complete lifespan of the Roman empire is an important work in the study of the field later inspiring Edward Gibbon's six-volume 1776 The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. The revised version came in 1748 which Montesquieu crafted himself from his own notes at the time of original publication this 1769 work being a new edition published posthumously. Bound in brown full calf. Contemporary inscription to rear of front free endpaper followed by annotations presumably by the same hand to the rear of the title page. Externally very smart with slight bumping and rubbing minor loss of leather most noticeably along joints and to spine head and tail and a few scattered marks to boards. Internally firmly bound. A few small tears to page edges mainly to page 3. Generally bright and clean copy with light discolouration and the odd spot throughout and heavier spotting to the first and last few pages. Una nota manoscritta su un foglio ripiegato cioè quattro facciate riporta delle Observations sur le Livre de l'Esprit des Loix tratte dall'Origine du despotisme oriental di Boulanger. Altre note manoscritte per tre fitte pagine sono contenute nell'ultimo foglio bianco e nel foglio bianco dietro la risguardia e sembrano tratte dal Mercure de France del Novembre 1753. Terza edizione. Legatura coeva in tutta pelle dorso a nervi ornato e dorato piccola mancanza di pelle a un angolo tagli rossi. Risguardie in carta marmorizzata. Condizioni molto buone tranne il taglio indicato a un margine bianco per questa preziosa edizione di pochi mesi successiva alla prima.</p> Barrillot
