Francesco Petrarca July 20 1304 – July 19 1374 commonly anglicized as Petrarch was an Italian scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". In the 16th century Pietro Bembo created the model for the modern Italian language based on Petrarch's works as well as those of Giovanni Boccaccio and to a lesser extent Dante Alighieri. Petrarch would be later endorsed as a model for Italian style by the Accademia della Crusca. Petrarch's sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance and became a model for lyrical poetry. He is also known for being the first to develop the concept of the "Dark Ages." This standing back from his time was possible because he straddled two worlds - the classical and his own modern day. Wikipedia ___________________________ Susannah Dobson née Dawson died 1795 was an English translator from the south of England. The daughter of John Dawson of the parish of St Dunstan London she married in 1759 a physician Dr Matthew Dobson of Liverpool who died at Bath Somerset in 1784. They had three children. Frances Burney mentions that in 1780 Susannah Dobson was ambitious to get into Mrs Thrale's circle but the latter was not keen: "Mrs Dobson… persecutes me strangely as if with violent & undesired Friendship; yet Mrs Lewis says She is jealous." A modern view of what Thrale wrote in Thraliana is that it implied Dobson was a lesbian. Burney wrote of her "Though coarse low-bred forward self-sufficient and flaunting she seems to have a strong masculine understanding." Dr Dobson had become Mrs Thrale's physician. Using Petrarch's letters to and about the Roman tribune this work traces Cola's friendship with Petrarca through the poet's embrace of his revolution to his bitter disappointment at Cola's fall. With two portrait frontispieces and numerous exquisite engraved vignettes throughout. Includes six sonnets which had recently been discovered by G. Veludo the dedicatee under a separate title. As Bondy notes "The pagination of volume 2 jumps from page 7 to page 16 to allow for the insertion of the sei sonetti di Francesco Petrarca scoperti e publicati da G'. Veludo"; however in this volume the six sonnets are bound at the end. Ongania explains in his preface that this edition is uniform with Salmin's famous "fly's eye type" miniature Dante of the previous year the success of which inspired him to produce the Petrarch. Ongania's penchant for laudatory mimicry led him to pioneer the use of new photomechanical processes in art books and in facsimiles. Bound in full brown leather with gilt tooling to covers and spine. In Venetia Appresso di Franceso Bindoni & Mapheo Pasini. 1542. Reprint of the Aldine of 1521 with the six full-page Zoppino woodcut illustrations to the Triomphi. Small octavo. 183 leaves. From leaf 135 onwards there has been extensive professional work to alleviate the effects of damp on the upper parts with only a slightly loss of text at the very last lines. Twentieth century binding to style of full brown calf with raised bands blind rules and floral devices no titles on spine.From the library of Lytton Strachey with his small bookplate designed by Dora Carrington on the front pastedown. On the front free endpaper is the bookplate of Roger Senhouse who was Strachey's last lover. On the front pastedown is the leather title-label presumably from the book's previous 18th century binding. It is likely that Senhouse was responsible for the rehabilitation of the book and that the two bookplates have been relocated from its previous endpapers.Ownership inscription dated 1806 at front and a few marginalia in the same hand within.
