Lorenzo a Firenze, designato provveditore allo Studio di Pisa (1769) da Pietro Leopoldo, fondatore del Giornale de' letterati di Pisa che diresse fino al 1796. Tra gli auctores peculiares di Francesco Petrarca un ruolo di primo piano rivestono Lucio Anneo Seneca e Gaio Svetonio Tranquillo. «Seneca autem tragedias [texuit], que apud poetas profecto vel primum vel primo proximum locum tenent», «[Svetonius] Tranquillus, auctor certissimus»: queste citazioni, tratte rispettivamente da Fam. IV 16, 9 e Gest. Ces. 14, sono un riflesso dell'attento dialogo intrattenuto da Petrarca con le opere dei due autori, prima corredate sui manoscritti in suo possesso di postille e segni d'attenzione a guisa di vere e proprie biblioteche ai margini del testo, poi rievocate a più riprese negli scritti latini e volgari. Qui Petrarca, tessendo le sue parole assieme alle voci dei due magni auctores, creò pagine di mirabile modernità, alcune inerenti la sua personale historia, altre incentrate su riflessioni filosofiche ed estetiche di valenza universale, altre ancora dedicate alla formulazione di giudizi sulle vicende del passato e sulla politica del presente.

His original manuscript "De remediis utriusque forunae" is a work of prose consisting of two hundred and fifty-three dialogues that he completed near the end of his life. Il Canzoniere ha goduto di un successo straordinario e ininterrotto in tutta Europa; è stato letto, imitato, saccheggiato ma il suo significato complessivo, in tanta fortuna, è stato quasi sempre tradito o banalizzato, per l'oggettiva difficoltà di darne un'interpretazione univoca. La nuova edizione di questo volume si propone di aiutare il lettore a comprendere la natura "organica" del libro di Petrarca: non si tratta cioè di un insieme di frammenti (a dispetto del titolo latino Rerum vulgarium fragmenta) ma di un'architettura complessa e stratificata che nel corso del tempo ha avuto destinazioni d'uso diverse e fatto suoi elementi stilistici difformi.
