Paris - Garnier Freres 1900 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. A copy of Lettres Ecrites a un Provincial by Blaise Pascal. Preceded by a history of provincial letters after the 1754 editionand literary observations by Francois de Neufchateau. Blaise Pascal 19 June 1623- 19 August 1662 was a French mathematician physicist inventor writer and Christian philosopher. He was a child prodigy who was educated by his father a tax collector in Rouen. Pascal's earliest work was in the natural and applied sciences where he made important contributions to the study of fluids and clarified the concepts of pressure and vacuum by generalising the work of Evangelista Torricelli. Condition: In a half calf leather binding with marbled paper covered boards. Externally a trifle rubbed. There is some minor loss to the leather. Backstrip is lifting. Rear board is held by cords only. Internally generally firmly bound though front hinge is tender. Pages are generally bright and clean with some minor age-toning due to type of paper used. 'Lettres Provinciales' is a collection of eighteen letters by Blaise Pascal. The letters are a defence of Antoine Arnauld who was condemned for heretical views by the Faculte de Theologie at the Sorbonne. Pascal ridicules the dispute between the Thomists and Jesuits deals with the question of 'actual grace' and attacks on Jesuit casuistry a reasoning process. The 'Lettres' were popular when published due to Pascal's wit and humour but was also banned by Louis XIV. Their popularity survived becoming inspiration for Voltaire and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Pascal was a Catholic theologian writer and mathematician who begun writing influential works on philosophy and theology after a religious experience in 1654. His other famous work was 'Pens�es'. With an introduction by Fran�ois de Neufch�teau a French statesman and scientist who wrote 'Po�sies Diverses' 'Ode Sur les Parlements' and 'Fables et Contes'. With a frontispiece to Volume I. Bookplate to the front pastedowns belonging to Robert D. Fowler. Condition: In the original half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. Light rubbing to the paper to the boards. Rubbing to the extremities has resulted in a little loss. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spines and raised bands with light marking to the spines. Crack to the tail of the front board measuring two and half inches. Bookplate to the front pastedowns. Front hinge of Volume II is starting but firm. Internally firmly bound.
